This was actually my second time reading this book. Our 6th grade team used it as a read-aloud for their social studies curriculum, and I recorded the readings for them. Aside from the fact that this is not an "own voices" title, Messner does a great job bringing the story of Samuel de Champlain's voyage through Canada and into Lake Champlain to life. There's enough research, including excerpts from primary sources, to ensure historical accuracy and enough adventure to engage a middle school audience.

This was so different from other books by Kate Messner. As a historical fiction set before the French and Indian War in New France, it gave me more information about that time. I loved the main character, Silent One. I was glad that there wasn't much graphic fighting. Quick read.
