The Colored Pencil: Key Concepts for Handling the Medium

Rate this book
No one who works in colored pencil—or wants to—can afford to be without this book, which is the most complete resource on the medium. The revised edition provides the latest information on colored pencils while retaining the best feature of the original: Bogeson's beautiful artwork; authoritative information about materials; clearcut lessons on color mixing and specific techniques; and demonstrations of various methods for creating works in colored pencils. Two new chapters introduce revolutionary techniques: applying frisket film to lift colored pencil pigment from paper, and using ordinary masking tape to remove even densely applied color.

I am very carefully not blaming this book because I’m still pretty ordinary at colour pencils. But I’m still baffled because all the images look grainy and I can’t work out whether that’s texture and the author built up everything with stippling, or photo quality.

A great book for a serious artist, though, there are a few techniques to start with a young child. I found it fascinating. But, I think we'll stick with the for kids books at this point.

Great CP book by an inspirational artist with a different take on the medium than many of the current photorealistic artists out there. I've really enjoyed all three books that I've read by her.

There must be more ways to use colored pencils. Bet's illustrations seem all alike. Those of other illustrators give some other concepts, but . . . Of course, I have yet to try anything . . !!

I found this book weirdly depressing. All of the sample pictures look the same- something about them feels lifeless and sad.
