Born in 1908 in France, Henri Cartier-Bresson is considered to be the father of modern photojournalism. Early on he adopted the versatile 35mm format and helped develop the popular “street photography” style, influencing generations of photographers that followed. In his own words, he expressed that “the camera is a sketch book, an instrument of intuition and spontaneity, ...more

I was inspired to buy this book by a recent perusal of an Henri Cartier-Bresson exhibition at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. The exhibition was transformational, and I wanted something easy to carry back on the plane. This little book does what it sets out to do -- to give you a brief view into Cartier-Bresson's life and thinking. The pictures get butchered in the small paperback format, unfortunately -- an irony because HCB hated cropping his pictures in any way. But enough of the art ...more

Picked up this book as a souvenir from Paris at Shakespeare & Co bookstore after visting HCB foundation museum. It was small & easy to carry on flight which was the sole reason when I picked. But the size of the book is very deceptive compared to its content. An amateur photographer myself I had lots of learning from this book. The chapters go through HCB's life chronologically & showcases his thinking towards photography & life in general which are very integral. The photos pres ...more

"Cartier Bresson often told the story of how Gandhi leafed through his MoMA catalogue and stopped at a portrait of Paul Cladel next to a hearse. After asking about the meaning of the image, Gandhi exclaimed: 'Death, death and death.' Less than an hour later, he was assassinated."

Cartier Bresson also served prison for quite a few years before finally being successful in his third attempt at escaping.

Interesting snippets like these, provided by this book, makes it a good read. Though not quite de

Informative little book. A complete history of the photographer's life and work from the beginning surrealist influences to his work as a reporter to his commission projects, of which the majority were portraits. And until the very end of his life, even after he had officially given up photography, he continued to do portraits. What he had to say about this: 'Taking a portrait is the hardest thing for me. It's like placing a question mark over someone.' I read this book out of sequence, and re-r ...more

Great introduction to the artist and his work that provides insight into what drove Cartier-Bresson's style. The book is a bit small (5"x7") for the subject matter. Although that makes this paperback quite affordable, given the subject matter it would benefit from a slightly larger format (e.g., 6"x9") to make the photos easier to see and still keep the price low. That aside, I found the content got me thinking more about how I approach my photography and so I think it will enhance my work.

An interesting book.

I came across Henri Cartier-Bresson while researching for the photography course I'm currently doing. After that, I decided to read more about him because I found his life and career really intriguing. For example, his background in Surrealism, his dabbling in the film industry, and his affinity for photo-journalism.

I am very fond of this, a very good simple intro - I am browsing through a massive retrospective and realizing I much preferred the text and selection of what to print and what to print large on this little cheap book.

Enjoyable enough, if a bit worshipful. I can't help thinking that Cartier-Bresson might have found the book's small size off putting. Or, at the least, a poor venue in which to publish photographs.

A brief biography of Henri Cartier-Bresson, which explains why he took the photographs he did. Also has a chapter on how he composed his photographs.

I enjoyed this book. It is a small, pocket-sized version, so the photographs are small. Not so satisfactory.
