Enjoyed this glimpse of a bygone era - a regiment of Scottish soldiers proud to represent the Empire and the noblesse oblige of its officers. It is snobbish (yet convincing) in its depiction of officers vs. enlisted men, and the characters are not always appealing but I found this book and its sequel extremely readable. Book 3 awaits but I suspect the author died before he could write the planned Book 4 of the quartet.

This could have been good. But about halfway through the language got very strong (like three F bombs as well as other profanity) and also became quite dirty. I don't expect this sort of thing in a vintage generational saga so I was pretty disgusted. I stuck with it longer than I should have (armed with my white out tape :) but by about 3/4 way through Id had enough.
If language and coarseness doesn't bother you, the story itself is interesting. (The story travels from India to China to New Zealand and back to Scotland.) But based on content I cant recommend it. Ive already cancelled my orders for the two sequels.

Very interesting tale of the inner workings of Army life in the 1800s. A family of soldiers and their offspring give their lives to the Queen. Interesting knowledge regarding the British soldiers as they March through India and the resultant problems that ensued.

I read this because I am of the Maclaren clan. My maiden name is a variant. I only really liked one character and he was not officially a Maclaren . I enjoyed it enough to continue the series.

read this book
Great author , I am going to read book 2 . The story is compelling as the characters are very well explained and one truly roots for each of them. The writing is also beautiful in its description of nature.

This is the best soap opera I’ve ever read!!!

It was interesting and I might follow-up by reading its sequels. I mostly read it because I am a McLaren and it is a novel about my clan. It is predominantly a romance.
