Indigo children are bright, intuitive, strong-willed, and sometimes self-destructive individuals. They are often labeled (and misdiagnosed) as having ADD or ADHD because they won’t comply with established rules and patterns; and they may exhibit behavioral problems at home and at school. In The Care and Feeding of Indigo Children, Doreen Virtue, Ph.D., explores the psyche of these special kids and offers alternative solutions to Ritalin based on her extensive research and interviews with child-care experts, teachers, parents, and the Indigo Children themselves. Read the accounts of these remarkable children as they explain why they act-out, are aggressive or withdrawn; and what they want from the adults in their lives. You’ll also be fascinated by the psychic experiences that these kids have had in their lives so far. This is a groundbreaking book that can positively affect the ways in which you interact with your child, altering the shape of their future in miraculous ways.
In terms of quality, this book is worth less than one star. For entertainment value, it's a 5+. According to the book's test, I am an "indigo child" and thus should be able to travel through time by not looking at clocks. That's right, time doesn't exist if you don't look at clocks.
Because this book has a disturbingly high rating on Goodreads, I would like to amend my review to read: IF YOU BELIEVE THIS BOOK, YOU ARE ACTIVELY HARMING YOURSELF AND YOUR CHILDREN.
As a teenager, a Reiki master friend of mine taught me about Indigo and Crystal children. Today, I'm a polarity student (I'm what the author might call a Somatic Experiencing therapist... in training; p. 227). A lot of what we've learned in class is echoed in "The Care and Feeding of Indigo Children," such as the Ayruvedic doshas, the nutrition aspect, clearing one's self and space, raising vibrations, and performing Lightwork. I am also a play advocate. The author stresses the importance of being outside in nature and participating in aerobic exercise -- two things that I believe are lacking from most peoples' lifestyles.
The author comes from a Christian background; she tries to keep her work nondenominational (p. 66). Throughout the book, the reader is expected to replace "God" with whichever "ascended master" s/he follows. If such things annoy you, or you don't believe in angels or similar beings, this might not be the best book for you.
There are a lot of great points about why these children don't fit into the mainstream school system, as well as suggestions for parents looking for an alternative to prescription drugs. The "Feeding" section of this book deals extensively in changing one's diet. The author also suggests specific vitamin and mineral supplements (p. 153).
The author includes quotes and interviews from AD(H)D/Indigo children themselves. The interviews were conducted by the author's stepdaughter, in the belief that the interviewers would feel more comfortable speaking with a peer (p. 181) The interviewers' ages range from about 14-22, so a handful of the responses aren't terribly long or detailed.
Suggested prayers and affirmations are sprinkled throughout the book. It contains an extensive bibliography and a short list of resources.
Generally, I like the book. Much of the information is applicable to anyone -- child or adult -- regardless of aura colors or denomination.
Thank you Doreen Virtue for the insights you offer - I was able to understand myself MUCH better than ever before and create space for understanding my daughter as her being unfolds. I read this book several times while pregnant and as a new mother. Over the last 4 years, I've gained great perspective on all children based on Doreen's perspective.
If you have a ever wondered if you are an Indigo, if you don't know what an 'Indigo' is, if you have a child that doesn't quite 'fit' into the norms of the social or school system, please read this book.
I'm so grateful for Doreen Virtue's courage to talk about Indigo's in such supportive ways. This book has clarified for me what my intuition has been telling me about me, my daughter and hopefully will give many parents relief in knowing that their ADHD or ADD children are here as instruments of change, not to be drugged as school or social system, family members and friends might be telling us to do. Did you know that most children diagnosed with ADD are actually gifted? How different would the world be if we nurtured those gifts instead of drugging them? People don't know this and follow the 'expert's' advice often times prescribing Ritalin.
This book brings to life the issues of our toxic environment, both the physical world and the metaphysical world, it brings to life the strong messages our children are giving us about the necessity of change. It brings to life the potential of awakening and living with purpose as we guide our children to find, uncover and unfold their individual gifts and purpose. Doreen practically lays out unconventional steps, prayers and suggestions that will dramatically help parents and their little people.
Lets change the world by deeply listening to our children. Lets change the world by following our hearts and not the societal norms that limit the very essence of life. Lets change the world by lovingly guiding our little people, honouring their presence and divine gifts.
It's hard work, as parents we need to be at our absolute best to see the blessings in the path to raising an Indigo child. Changing the world through our determination and standing up for our little people is motivation beyond anything else I can think of.
I picked up this book because I had seen a couple books by Doreen Virtue in the New Age section at my Barnes and Nobles, and this seemed like a good one to start with. I was diagnosed as Attention Deficit Disorder as a child, but the ADD label never sat right with me, and in the 90s it was being applied to everyone.
The introduction to this book explains that Indigo Children are being medicated because they’re perceptions aren’t quite in line with everybody else’s – as Doreen says it is Attention Dialed into a Higher Dimension. According to Doreen and others, Indigos are individuals who were sent to this planet with a mission to help our society evolve into one more accepting of New Age values. Just what these values are is up for debate, and no one ever tries to explain just what extraterrestrial force is sending the Indigos. Doreen Virtue sidesteps a lot of these questions by talking about nutrition, and suggesting certain prayers you can direct at certain angels for certain situations. A lot of this advice seems like it could be applied to any child at all, and beyond the first few chapters it gets very maternal and not particularly interesting to me.
I’m going to hold off on claiming I am an Indigo Child because it’s the kind of thing that can’t be accurately diagnosed. Indigos are supposed to be self-confident, purposeful, highly intelligent, and possessed of psychic powers; I’d like to be able to describe myself that way. But whether you want to consider yourself ADD, Aspie, Indigo or Crystal, some people are just a little strange, and millennials seem to have a need to categorize themselves into exclusive groups. I’ve sat with groups of Indigos and joined some of their facebook groups, and I’ve found they can be just as cliquish and vapid as any other group, with a few poor individuals desperately trying to prove their psychic powers just to fit in. Doreen’s book is well intentioned and may be of some help to new parents interested in spirituality.
I'm not a parent myself but I do work with children and so I decided to read this book because I thought it'd be of help understanding certain children. Most chapters of this book were quite useful, others made my eyes roll... It was very interesting to know more about who the indigo children really are and how to recognise them. Also, how to help them to feel better in this world and the given advice for feeding them in a healthy way. However, this book was written by an American author for American parents about American children and American educational system and I, as an European, living in the heart of Europe, could not relate much. And I really disagree with what the author says about metal, rock and dark music being "damageful" etc. The "vegetarian propaganda" and the "eso-Christian" mumbo-jumbo was quite nonsense to me as well, even though I'm pretty much esoteric and spiritual myself. All in all, I'd say this book is still useful and I'm familiar with Virtue's other works as well, which I like.
'Take heed that you do not despise any of these little ones,' Jesus saying. 'For they are great in the kingdom of G!D - the kingdom of Heaven; and they have angels watching over them in the kingdom of Heaven' (as written in Scriptures)
'If any of you offer any of these little ones even a touch on skin, compassionately - not as the hypocrites do, nor as those who patronise do: 'oh, yes, hm, you're right, we agree,' but later with their fellows say 'oh, surely we are on your side, we were only mocking' - or a glass of water, assuredly, I tell you, you will not lose your reward.' - Jesus
This is particularly to address concerns in certain societies that children now-adays are increasingly 'abnormal'; increase in - reportedly - kindergartens or play-groups that are targeted at so-called 'disabled' children. Or, a little more congenially, 'special needs children' - yes, medicine for them, psychiatrists for them, psychologists for them, separation and isolation of them, specially trained teachers of them - G!D knows best what to do with you and me and them. And G!D is the best at planning.
If you're in Singapore, you may find - or may not find - a copy at 'Mustafa', a shopping centre.
I have been doing quite a bit of delving into the subject of 'special' children as of late, and while I believe that all children are special and attempting to label them is restrictive, I do believe there are some souls that have come in at this time to change the way things are per waived and done. The old paradigms no longer work, and these souls are here to show us just that. Among these are the manner we deal with our children.
With that being said, I did find some of what Ms Virtue shared in her book helpful on my quest to "do better" with my own kids. And while I do work with the angels in my own spiritual practices, I do find that the author's suggestions do rely too heavily on help from the other realms and does not, to my way of thinking, provide enough practical suggestions. I do believe, if one is heavily spiritually centered, however, her suggestions will be complementary to other measures taken.
This is a somewhat "out there" book that talks about the significance of the children now coming to Earth (they all have indigo-purple auras). I believe in auras, so this isn't a huge stretch for me....Heck, I know I've got 3 little Indigos hanging out at my house! From what I have gathered, the children of today have a collective mission (to usher in the return of our Savior by preparing the Earth to receive and give love). But this book kind of leaves God out of it. I'm waiting for a Christian/gospel-oriented book to come out that takes a spiritual or doctrinal perspective on this issue. My friend Rebecca Rocque is getting her PHD at BYU and is doing her doctoral dissertation on Indigo Children so maybe she'll get it done! ANYWAY, I like the approach of how to "validate" and understand our "new" children in this book.
I would have given this 5 stars only I don't really hold with ALL that is said in the book. The "indigo child" phemomenom wavers between children send frm heaven and children from other planets, neither of which I personally buy. However I totally agree with a lot of the advice given here to help you raise your child in the modern world. As a mum of 3 I know that excessive electricity sends my kids loopy, that highly coloured and additive filled foods are worse than speed and that sometimes you have to try and think like your child to understand why they do things. If you want a book that helps you navigate these modern perils then its fantastic, so long as its served with a big pinch of salt.
A very interesting read that I picked up to read in order to try to understand what the seemingly illogical to me actions of teenage children of my friends were doing and not doing - dropping out of or not even engaging in post secondary education opportunities for example.
What future were they envisioning and where were their spirits taking them was of keen interest to me.
I had also been reading about auras and wondered what the reference to indigo meant.
In reading this book I learned a lot as well about ADD and ADHD, which peaked my adult literacy interest and reasons why some adults didn't do well in school.
finally! phew! I had to request this book 4 times from out of state library book request. it is an interesting read on understanding this "new wave" of children here. I am a child stuck between the old ways and the new ways. industrial born and raised trying to get through life in a technology world. trying to raise 2 kids in a technology world with outdated industrial values. It is an encouraging, enlightening book. definately a must read for more open minded individuals. and btw, this is supportive of most faiths. the best way to understand it is to read it. Like the old saying goes, Don't knock it 'til you try it".
Being myself an Indigo child, it is indeed nice to fall upon a book like this one. i adore her kind of writing she writes from knowledge and experience and she approaches the subject with so much rispect and love that it is hard not to feel loved and chrieshed by it. it is definetly a helpful manual to s Indigo children but also one to the new people who just approached it. it helps a lot with understanding the actions that have been made the strange feelings that you have and don't kno why. it is a MUST book to all the Indigos wether you are a parent or not.
This book was a facsinating read and a real eye opener for me. There were things that I didn't agree with, as is always the case when you are reading things that aren't directly realated with your religious beliefs. However, there were many truths in it. After having a person whom I trust very much tell me that my son was a Indigo and that I should read this book, I did. I am so glad that I did. It has helped me to understand him better and relate to him better and differently as well.
It is just a handbook about taking care of these special personalities referred to as "indigo" youngsters. Particular care about their sensitive physical and psychic natures: environment, clothing, emotions, food etc. What I found most useful was the set of half a dozen powerful techniques invoking angels to help protect and cleanse the loved one.
You definitely have to be open minded while reading this book. I had a hard time wrapping my brain around all the "angel " references, but over all the advice in this book was helpful in better understanding my son and why he behaves the way he does.
If you have questions about Indigo Children this is a good book. You really only need one good book about Indigo Children, maybe read two. Best to get this one at the library.
This is a must read for parents of indigo children. The parenting tips are great for any parents though. Gives actual tools to use in many different scenerios.
