Quite a frustrating book. It’s obvious that the writers/publishers have worked a lot to produce the material, which is of course commendable. But it’s also obvious that they haven’t tried the book out on their target audience (ie beginners in Mandarin) to gain feedback.
One small example (exposing my ignorance): page 11 is about introducing people, they have three sample characters each with cartoon illustrations. Two have their names shown in English.
One has their name only in Mandarin, and is Mei Mei. But Mei Mei also happens to mean little sister. Is it not 100% obvious they could have chosen some different name in order to avoid confusion ? There are after all quite a lot of possible names.
