The passing away of a friend or loved one is handled with warmth in this gentle tale.

Joseph Chickadee is a bird, who passes away, but this isn't a tale about his death. Instead, the author takes a look at how the other birds remember him. Joseph Chickadee comes across as a kind bird, who was well liked by others. Although sadden by his passing, the birds remember the special moments they had with him and his kind actions. It offers love, hope and a continuing warmth to know that his memory is a happy one, which the others look back on fondly.

The author has created this book with love. While the tale is gentle and delivers its message through the birds, the illustrations add even more warmth. The oil paintings present the birds in a more realistic manner and keep the theme of each illustration simple, while letting the beauty of the birds unfold. It's a book to enjoy (especially for nature and bird lovers) but can also be used to open up discussions surrounding the loss of loved ones.

I received a complimentary copy and found it sweet enough to want to leave my honest thoughts.

A sweet and touching story

Remembering Joseph Chickadee is a delightful tale of the life and passion of a brave little chickadee leader. This story is full of vibrant characters, a lovely story line, and an age appropriate bite size exposure to life cycles and death. I love how the author has seamlessly and unassumingly tucked Avian facts right next to entertaining dialog.   This is a very sweet and touching story that is perfect for sharing with your favorite small person while snuggling quietly on the couch for a lazy afternoon. The use of personification of the bird characters creates a whimsical world out of a subject that kiddos usually find awe inspiring to begin with. I mean, think about it, birds can FLY! That fact alone is so cool to kids. I do not know of any kid that hasn't pretended they could fly.  What a great way to teach children about love, kindness, death and future by using the tiniest, most interesting of creatures.

Oh we'll remember

Remembering Joseph Chickadee is a children's book but I'm going to classify it as a book that anyone can enjoy. I sure enjoyed reading it to my daughter.

My daughter also enjoyed this story. She followed along with no problem and it kept her attention the entire time. We both liked the illustrations a lot as well. The birds were cute and fun to look at. There was a sort of softness to the whole thing that tied in really well with the charming pictures.

The book deals with death and I was happy to see the way the author addressed the subject. Everyone dies. It's a great way to introduce this idea to children without scaring them. My daughter grasped it effortlessly.

I'm sure she'll be choosing this book to read before bed again many times in the future.

"Remembering Joseph Chickadee" is a beautiful book that brings up the conversation about death. Using animals to tell the story about death is a lot nicer than just doing it with humans. Nancy Youngdahl hit this topic in the ballpark. We learn when someone or something passes away they are missed. Each page is filled with beautiful oil painting illustrations. It stresses how no one will forget him and how he was an inspiration. We see all of his friends dealing with grief. This is a sad but heartwarming story.
