I don't normally read horror, but decided to give it a go. After reading this collection, I was afraid to go into my basement alone for weeks. Wesley Thomas had me imagining all sorts of horrors were hiding in the shadows, even as he invites them out to play.
I absolutely love the work by Wesley Thomas! And his latest does not disappoint.
His writing style is truly unique. As the story unfolds, the author is continually painting a picture in the readers mind. The picture starts as something simple but the details grow with each sentence. As the story is being told, the characters and their environments come to life at the same time the heart pounding story is tearing through the readers emotions.
Every story builds anticipation and fear and ends in a way that allows the readers mind to carry on the story. He sets it up so you know where it is going and how it is going to end but does not go into detail at the exact ending. This can be even more terrifying for the reader because of the buildup Wesley Thomas has created and because the mind is a crazy thing that can bring out fears you did not know you had!
The author does this with every story and I love it! Most of the stories start innocent enough but just a few sentences in, I can feel my heart racing as a read where this story is heading because I know with this author, it’s not going to end in a happy place.
I look forward to every story Author Wesley Thomas produces because he is one of the few authors that can really terrify me and leave me thinking about the story long after I have finished it. Another talent of his is his stories have you looking at ordinary objects in new ways. I never realized something as nice and relaxing as wind chimes could now bring my anxiety to a whole new level.
If you are looking for a good scare, I highly recommend the Things That Scare Us Collection.
A very clever and enjoyable collection of horror short stories that are very enjoyable. They were well written and very easy to understand and experience what the characters were going through. This author really is a master at the subtle and fooling you into what is going to happen in these stories so that you are surprised when it finally does. I particularly enjoyed Insidious Infidelity which definitely hit the right spot in my appreciation of a clever plot and story. Definitely recommended and not as horror focused as you would think (I don't like horror myself) so worth a try.
