This was the book that got me into directing and wanting to create films and videos. It was finally a book that spoke my language and needless to say I finished it quickly!!

I now have new perspective on how cinematography, editing, color scheme, costume etc. are carefully planned and help influence and reinforce the themes of a movie. Great case-studies of regional cinemas, the filmography of David Lynch, Johnny Depp's position as a "star" and much more. A little dense and verbose at times, but I guess that comes with the territory. The author Andrew Dix, has scattered numerous wry and witty observations which help keep you smiling as you read.

সিনেমা নিয়ে লেখাপড়া শুরু করার বই, এমনটা বইয়ের টাইটেলে থাকলেও আসলে এটি মোটেও বিগিনারদের জন্য নয়। বরং, একে ইন্টারমিডিয়ারি কিছু বলা যায়। কারন, বেশিরভাগ প্রসঙ্গের অবতারনা পাঠক তা সম্পর্কে জানে, এমনভাবেই বর্ণিত হয়েছে।

এই কথাগুলো লেখা, যে হয়তো কেউ পড়া শুরু করে ভয় পেয়ে বন্ধ করে দিতে পারে বইয়ের নামের কারনে। কিন্তু, যদি এটা শুরুতেও পড়া হয়, রেফারেন্স ধরে কিছু কিছু বিষয় পড়ে আবার এতে ফিরে আসলে সমস্যা হবে না আর সেভাবে পড়াটা দোষের কিছুও না।

লেখক নানাদিক থেকে একেকটি বিষয় বিশ্লেষন করেছেন এবং কোন একটি মেজর থিওরি ধরে ঝুলে পড়ে তার পক্ষে সমানে যুক্তি উপস্থাপন করেন নি। প্রতিটি বিষয় সম্পর্কেই একটি পরিপূর্ণ ধারনা দেবার বেলায় তার আন্তরিকতা আমাকে স্পর্শ করেছে, অবশ্যই আগেই বলেছি যে সেগুলো সবই একদম প্রাথমিক পর্যায় থেকে আলোচিত হয় নি এবং সেটি দোষ মনে হয় নি।

আরো নতুন কোন এডিশানে আরো নতুনতর ধারণা পাওয়া যেতো হয়তো। এখানে দর্শকদের মতিগতি বুঝতে ডিভিডিতে দেখার বিষয়টি শেষ আলোচনা ছিল। মানে, টরেন্ট থেকে স্ট্রিমিং অবধি যে দ্রুত পরিবর্তন ঘটেছে সিনেমার আস্বাদনে, তা বইটিতে আসে নি। আরো যা আসে নি তা হল, সিনেমার সাথে বর্তমানে ওয়েব সিরিজের প্রতিযোগিতা, হলগামী দর্শকদের নতুনরকমের চাহিদা এবং এই বিষয় দুটি সিনেমা ও সিরিজকে আর সব ‘কনটেন্ট’ এর অংশে পরিণত করে নির্মানের বেলায় কি পরিবর্তন এনেছে তা।

Some of the first few chapters of the book are interesting and worthwhile. They were exactly what I was after in practical knowledge of how to analyse a film.
Unfortunately some of the later chapters are essentially political propaganda, and you can see how students at university are programmed to think in a narrow way these days, if this is what they're taught.

I thought that this was, just as its title suggests, a good introductory text on film studies. Furthermore, I think the book will also be both quite accessible and interesting for those who are just generally interested in the world of films.

Good readable introduction, breaks down all the major areas and summarises the main arguments.
