Dumas was sort of a cross between Stephen King's ability to churn out best-sellers (on an international scale) and Norman Mailer's bravado. He left travel books across what seems like half the world. This book is a record of his 1858 across a Caucasus where the Russians in their forts and cities tried to subjugate the local tribes (Lesghians and Circassians, among others). His fame preceded him and he was received with honors, gifts of muskets, and Cossack escorts; he hunted, went to Russian dan ...more

This is such a silly text. The second novella, Sultanetta, is basically copied from an existing Russian novel and Dumas simply took it. The first, Ball of Snow, is a clear reflection of Dumas' romp through the Caucasus and a collection of tropes. These tropes reflect the huge history of the travel narrative, and this makes this text even more fun to read. Highly enjoyable, 4 stars.
