Лучшая книга по истории дешифровок различных систем письма от классики жанра - египетских иероглифов и клинописи до древнетюркских рун. Обладает идеальным для популярной литературы балансом между увлекательностью и научной строгостью изложения. Многие иллюстрации из книги кочуют по отечественной литературе без указания источника, т.е. по сути они стали хрестоматийными. Например, иллюстрация, отражающая ступени эволюции клинописи бесконечно воспроизводится во всех школьных учебниках древней истории.
Несмотря на солидное время, прошедшее с момента публикации (только советское издание вышло аж в 1963 году), актуальности книга не потеряла. Время очень немного добавило в копилку дешифрованных письменностей - на память приходит разве что дешифровка Юрием Кнорозовым письменности индейцев майя. А упомянутые в конце книги задачи для будущих исследователей - дешифровка письменности этруссков, протоиндской цивилизации и письменности жителей острова Пасхи, - по-прежнему остаются нерешенными.
