Summary: This non-fiction text explores the life cycle of a butterfly. It shows images of each stage (an egg, caterpillar, chrysalis and a butterfly). It not only shows the cycle, but explores how each change occurs by including facts and information about how long it takes as well as what it looks and feels like.

Review: What I love most about this book is the photographs included. There are real close up images of each stage which you would typically not be able to see by simply going outside. I also like that it shows how the cycle begins once again. It would be a useful book for teaching students all about butterflies and life cycles!

Books I would pair this with: National Geographic Readers: Great Migrations Butterflies by Laura Marsh and Butterfly Life Cycle by Jeff Bauer

The Life of a Butterfly, written be Robin Bernard is such an incredible informational text for elementary readers.

Each page contains less than 5 sentences and has a picture captured by various photographers. The book takes you through the life of a monarch butterfly. It starts at the beginning when an egg is laid, then goes on to tell its readers how a caterpillar is born, grows, creates its chrysalis, and comes out as a stunning monarch butterfly.

It is a circle story and contains a few double page spreads covered with monarch butterflies. The text includes diagrams, close-ups, maps, comparisons, time clocks, and measurements of caterpillars, butterflies, and their eggs.

This book is a great way to show even elementary aged children the basics of informational text.

This book is a traditional nonfiction book. It has real pictures of the different life cycles of a butterfly. It also has informative text. It's written almost like a science textbook. I also like that this book has extra fun little facts in it. For example, at the bottom of the first page there's an arrow showing you how big an egg really is. It also has text captions pointing to different parts of the cycles, like the caterpillar's legs and antennae. It's a quick read, very informative, and would be a good reference to use in the classroom.
