Giddens is an exceptionally intriguing writer, and his resolution of structure and agency reminds me a great deal of Bourdieu and his habitus. He lays down his theory with clarity and rigor, referring to the giants of social sciences past-- Marx, Parsons, Althusser-- neither bowing reverent before them but still recognizing their place in the evolution (perhaps not the word Giddens would want me to use) of a frame of thought. I'm especially fond of the way he needles some of the assumptions made ...more

This is a very good and inspiring book, but it is very difficult to understand easily what Giddens means about structuration actually.

A modern classic of sociology that examines the role of structures in society. Structures are seen as the non-physical reality of human rules and resources, expressed in action, time/space, and institutions.

Provides an alternate methodology for studying the interaction between human action and what we call "society." As with many innovative thinkers today, Giddens is attempting to reset sociology. Mainstream sociology tends to treat society as a thing itself, as opposed to patterns of interaction. Giddens questions these approaches and provides some methodologies that perhaps help us move on.
