YELLOWHEAD BLUES by R.E. Donald is a well-written murder mystery filled with lots of suspects as well as giving us a great sense of place. While this is the fifth book in the series, it worked well as a standalone novel.

The story mainly takes place in western Canada. Hunter Rayne is a former RCMP murder investigator who now drives an eighteen-wheeler for a living. He is flagged down by Leon to help with traffic control as a frightened horse with a bloody saddle is on the road. They look f

This was a unique book for me. A great premise, an interesting mystery and fascinating characters, each one stands out in their own way. Definitely on my re-read list! I understand it's part of (or will be) a series. I enjoyed this one so much, I'll be hunting down the rest of the series!

Well worth waiting for! Ms. Donald writes with warmth and skill as she describes her characters adventures. Once I start one of her books, I cannot put it down till the end.

This ranks as one of my favourite series and I was definitely NOT disappointed in this story after the unfortunately forced long wait for it’s release and I think my 4 star rating will attest to the fact that I think this is one of the best in the series and I hope there are more to follow and hopefully without any more forced delays. As always in Ms Donald’s books the settings, weather and all the characters, both good guys and bad guys, are superbly drawn and there’s lots of action and lots of ...more

Yellowhead Blues is the 5th book in the Hunter Rayne Highway mystery series by R.E. Donald. Released 21st July 2019, it's 315 pages and available in paperback and ebook formats.

This is a well written murder mystery featuring a former RCMP officer who believes in this case that the Mounties -didn't- get their man, or at least not the real guilty party. This series has a unique hook; a retired homicide inspector who is a long-distance trucker, working alongside

A flag-down on a remote Canadian highway thrusts Hunter into another mystery/adventure. This author skillfully twists this ex-Canadian Mounted Policeman into twisted intrigue. A burly French-Canadian flags him down to help with a spooked horse. Leon Rousseau is a good Samaritan trying to save the animal's life! Hunter gives him a hand.

A blood trail leads back to the horse's former rider and Leon’s dog Blue leads the way. Ms. Donald has put together a great read including a grifter, a

This is the first of this series that I've read....but it won't be the last! I will now go back & start at the beginning of the series, altho reading the 5th book into it... it was fine, I didn't feel hindered at all by beginning here. This story takes place in the later 1990's, & I could relate to the time references mentioned. The main character is a retired RCMP & now works as a truck driver & it's obvious that the author has spent time in the trucking industry, I also liked t ...more

I've followed this philosophical truck driver for several of Donald's books now, and each one offers a different side to Hunter Rayne. This one shows his love of animals. There is much about horses in the story, which I appreciated because I know horses. But their actions and behavior are explained well enough that even horse neophytes can follow along. There's also a great dog, and who doesn't love that!
The human characters are well-portrayed, too, and Donald kept me guessing who the kill

I won this book in a Goodreads giveaway. Since I've read a couple of the earlier books in the series and greatly enjoyed them, I was happy to give this one a try. Yellowhead Blues lives up to my expectations.
As usual, R.E. Donald has provided a well-written puzzle with characters that seem real. Hunter Rayne continues to develop as a character, and I'm hoping to see Bianca and Leo in future volumes of the series. The Canadian setting and truck-driving lifestyle provide a good framework for the

Former RCMP Hunter Rayne thought he was doing a good deed when he stopped to help calm a horse and find the missing rider. But it soon leads to a murder investigation as the police are not happy with his interference as he believes the RCMP arrested the wrong person.

With the aide if another RCMP officer they will track down their man. A riveting read of the dangerous of the highway.

Easy to read, plain language & interesting characters. Different concept for a mystery. I think it can be read as a stand alone; however, it would probably be better if read in order as a series. I rate it 3&3/4 and if I were more familiar with the locations I would rate it a 4. I received this book free from goodreads

Good thriller

I was intrigued by the concept of this character so I read the story to see how it would go. I was impressed with the way it went. The characters were interesting and the story was quite good. It moved along quickly and was an enjoyable read.

This is a very well written story set in an interesting location and with excellent characters. I hope the Canadian justice system is better than this, but the plot makes great fiction.

It’s not often I’m left struggling trying to find the best in a book I’ve read, but unfortunately, Yellowhead Blues is one such book. Hunter Raine is a former member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) who now drives a truck across Canada and the US. It’s on one of these runs that he comes across a frightened horse in the middle of the road with a bloodied saddle and a French Canadian cowboy trying to calm it down. The horse leads Hunter and the cowboy to what looks like a hunting accide ...more
