A very entertaining, well-written part one of an urban fantasy trilogy. Yes, dear Anna, I do want to get the answers to the questions you asked in the afterword and will be looking forward to the second part.
Set in post-apocalyptic Los Angeles, Shadow City focuses on the story of several characters, representatives of categories typical for the genre- humans, vampires, a cyborg, a mysterious creature capable of superfast healing and other untold miracles, and the Dark ones who are creeping

Shadow City is the opening salvo of a post-apocalypse fantasy trilogy. It's now several decades after the Big Glitch and the world will never be the same. Outside of a few survivors in Hollywood, the world is filled with radioactive mutants, vampires who are now revealing themselves to be real not fictional, demons erupting from a crack in the earth appropriately at LA s City Hall, and some other ancient race still hidden somewhere. The Zone survives only through a final alliance of humans and v ...more

In exchange for the opportunity to read this book from Net Galley, I offer a review of Shadow City by Anna Mocikat. @brwpublisher
This is a post - apocalyptic, fast paced and exciting thrill of a ride for a good die-hard science fiction fan. If you like mutants, humans, vampires, and other evil creatures that you can only imagine coming from a place you never want to visit, this is a story for you. There is torture, death, friendship and love.
Set in Los Angeles, the story follows four main char

“At the horizon, just a few miles away, a sign was visible standing on the dried-up hill. Huge letters, once bright white, were now dirty and gray. Although some of the oversized letters were missing, the following word could still be read: HO LYWO D.” (excerpt of Chapter 1, Shadow City by Anna Mocikat)

Had me hooked from the start🤩!! The setting, the characters, the monstrous creatures & the Dark Ones (freaky as hell btw!!), the delicious darkness in the writer’s descriptive abil

4.5 stars for me on this one!

The depth and breadth of the world Mocikat creates is astonishing! Even though this is post-apocalyptic survival type fiction, the world, the plot, and the characters seem real. Even though many characters and events are larger than life, Mocikat delivers them in a way that makes it all feel relatable. Pacing is spot-on and the second half had me turning pages wildly to find out what happens (I'll not mention why because... SPOILERS!).

The only issue I ha

Shadow City is an intriguing, action-filled post-apocalyptic novel. Set up as a trilogy, this is the first installment and introduction to the battle for the fate of the world. With a mix of regular people, vampires and technically enhanced survivors, the different factions that have survived the Glitch band together against the true horror threatening the world and every being in it.

The plot is well driven and keeps you reading, always wanting to know the next step on the journey. The characte

Shadow City is a future, ruined and decayed Los Angeles, cut off from the rest of the world by a global catastrophe referred to as the Glitch. The radiation from this produces mutants from a shadowy Beyond; however this is more a dark fantasy tale than SF, as the Glitch seems to have disrupted the equilibrium between dimensions too, as there is a region within the old city where Lovecraftian Dark Ones also emerge, to seek World Domination.
It is up to an imperilled community, of a small group of

Shadow City was given to me by Netgalley in exchange of an honest review.

Shadow City was EPIC! I honestly did not expect to like it so much. It is filled with so much action and world building. The writing by this author made it easy to follow the storyline. It has so much, but I was able to follow throughout and it fas paced. It is definitely part of a dark, grueling science fiction series.

The story is set during a post- apocalyptic Los Angeles world, after a supposed so called Glitch. It fol

This one was a page turner. So much going on and the story was fast paced. There were many characters and they had their own side story going on at the same time. Jean and Louis - sister/brother, Colton - unknown, Eric - vampire, Bombshell - cyborg, and Vincent - well you have to read the book to see what he is. I was really surprised by how quickly the read went and disappointed when it did end. Need more by this author.

Shadow City is a tour de force. Once I picked it up, I didn’t stop reading. It has dynamic characters who will make you laugh, and hold your breath as they face impossible situations. I can’t wait to see where this series leads.

This book was received as an ARC from Black Rose Writing in exchange for an honest review. Opinions and thoughts expressed in this review are completely my own.

Shadow City in parts reminded me a lot of Mortal Kombat and of The Last Man on Earth which made this book so exciting to read. To hear of scavengers Jean and Louis come across a nameless man that has the fate of their world in his hands and his power feeding on all destruction in the world was definitely something different an

It was 1 am when I read the last page of Anna Mocikat's "Shadow City". Why couldn't I stop reading this book, although it was so late and I had to get up early? Why did I flip through the pages not pausing even to make a cup of tea? Why don't I regret feeling like a zombie today? The last page of the book, containing information about the author, answered all of these questions.

What is really interesting about Shadow City is the blending of genres. It’s fantasy, dystopian, and action all at once and has its own clear world. The setting up of the abandoned Hollywood is great and the descriptions are really atmospheric. It’s almost film-like and a lot of the sequences made me feel I was watching an exciting blockbuster movie. There’s also a nice balancing between narrative stances as the chapters alternate between different characters’ perspectives. Sometimes I found it ...more

Great Read

This author pens a great story in Shadow City. This is the first book of this author's that I've read, and I enjoyed it, very much. Though the story is post-apocalyptic, it is not one of those cookie-cutter or typical stories. The story takes place in a destructed Los Angeles, that lingers with less-than-typical monsters, and that threat of radiation. The characters were well-developed, and the fight for survival was unimaginable, and unpredictable. This was a grand story,

A powerful, intense, dark, Sci-Fi read.
A Sci-Fi novel that will give you goosebumps, elevated heartbeat, and endless curiousity.
Anna's writing style gives you in-depth experience of the situation which along with fast pacing of the book makes the reader forget about real world to explore the world created by Anna.
The characters are strongly developed and the author keeps you looking for more about the characters.
The unanswered mysteries are making me imagine thousand answ

One man could renew the world. Or the same man could kill everything.

Set in a Post-Apocalyptic world that seems so life like. Along with the amazing characters and dialog. Even the bad guys in the book were written really well.
It was surreal. This book really hit a home run.

The plot and action are fast paced and will keep you energize to the point where you forget what time it is and have the book finished in a few hours. I was unable to put this book down.

OBSESSED. I absolutely LOVED this book. It was a total page turner and I fell in love with all the characters (even the bad ones)! I was engrossed in the story and didn't want it to stop! She has managed to create a world that has cyborgs, vampires, gangs, love and a huge mystery to boot! Who can do all that?! Anna Mocikat can. Getting an advanced copy of this book kept me up late and I didn't regret a second of it. Who (or what) is Colton?! I can't wait for the next book! Shadow City OBSESSED. I absolutely LOVED this book. I received an advanced reading copy of this book and Anna Mocikat has woven an intricate world in Shadow City that captures the imagination with everything from vampires to cyborgs. We are presented with a broken world and the shattered people that inhabit it. Watching each of their journeys is part of what makes this book so much fun. Some fall in love, some find their friendship has grown into something more, and others find a connection that will test their loyalties. All of this is set in a ...more

I unfortunately wasn't a fan of this book. I just wasn't that interested in the stories or characters. Because of this, it felt more like a job to finish this book instead of having fun with it. Was it bad? No, not at all. The writing and descriptions throughout the book are wonderfully done. The real question is, did I have fun reading this? That's where this book fell for me. I like to base my ratings on how well I enjoyed a book. I still keep the writing and plot development in check as well, ...more

I received an advanced review copy for this book, and I'm glad I did. Shadow City provides a rollicking ride through post-apocalyptic Los Angeles to a classic fight between good and evil. Decades after the Glitch has ended society as we know it, humans, cyborgs, vampires, and Dark Ones fight for existence in a broken world. The themes explored are universal, the beings facing the same struggles that we do today, as manifested through the infighting of the protective Zone, the elusive grasp of tr ...more
