In a post-American world, where an oppressive global government blankets all of humanity, the entire prison system has been dismissed in favor of an ungoverned region of forced exile. Caustically, it is named the State of Refuge. Amidst violence and anarchy, the convicts within must fend for themselves if they hope to survive. When seventeen-year-old Derek Vaskez is wrongl ...more

I really enjoyed this book. It is well-written, generally well paced and has strong characters that you can identify and sympathise with easily. The ending was a little vague but such is the way with book one in a trilogy! Flashbacks are used effectively to detail formative sections of the main protagonist's life, but I did feel that they were rather over-used in the early chapters and disrupted the narrative flow of the story. After the final war, an oppressive global government dominates the planet, erasing our history, altering our language, and deciding what jobs we do, and where we go. There is no freedom!

I enjoyed this. It was reasonably fast paced with strong characters I could identify with. The writing was certainly descriptive. I could imagine myself in the State of Refuge. There were some interesting twist and turns. The ending took me by surprise.
I hadn't realised it was book one of a series. Not sure I enjoyed it enough to read more. There were a few editing issues, but nothing to distracting.

David tells a sinister tale of a bleak, dystopian future, but unlike some other books of that ilk, his feels realistic and fully believable. That's probably due to his great attention to detail - from his own made-up orthography to the doubts niggling at the back of his main character's mind, everything is carefully thought-out. The story is a roller-coaster ride of suspense and emotions, with a thoroughly unexpected ending.

This is an easy read...sometimes a page turner! Although a 'dystopian society', it's not impossible to imagine. Give it a try...it's definitely a good read.
