I really enjoy going to Shady Maple for breakfast and to go shopping in both the Farm Market and Goods store. This book is the story about how the whole business began. It is interesting to read about the growth of the business. It is a heartwarming read that includes recipes!
I give this book five stars for its honesty. Marvin Weaver is a good man who worked hard, dug deeper, wasn't afraid of losing, found a good woman as smart and as tough as him, and built on a beautiful dream.. What I am talking about is what is known as "Shady Maple" what has become the biggest and best smorgasbord in the United States. That is the truth. They feed one million people each year. I was there twice this year. I brought guests from El Salvador and Guatamala. They loved it! The parking lot was like Woodstock. So many licence plates from so many states in the lot. Word has gotten out. Every dish that we had was great. They have a wonderful country store next door, This is like 15 minutes off of the Morgantown exit off of the Pennsylvania Turnpike, well worth you jumping off the Turnpike for a break. Marvin opens each chapter with a beautiful scripture that has shaped his life.
Saw this book in Shady Maple gift shop after experiencing the one of a kind, smorgasbord - can seat 1200, serves over a million meals a year, in central Lancaster county. This book, read in a few hours, is Marvin Weavers narration of his life, and how a small produce stand in 1969, became the mega smorgasbord, catering and wedding venue, large grocery store, 40,000 square foot gift emporium it is today. Written in 2015, an enjoyable story of hard work, hands on Marvin, along with many family members, and employees who worked decades at shady maple. Lovely how Marvin credits those employees and his wife Miriam with this uplifting life journey. Glad I read this after going to Shady Maple.
A fascinating and fun read about the famous store and smorgasbord near Lancaster, PA. It follows the "life" of Shady Maple. Excellent story about a local facility.
