Absolutely loved The Protective One. If I could I would give it more than five Stars. I thought the eye catching cover was beautiful. The book was an easy read and with excellent content. Centered around abuse in more than one circumstance, it had this reader on the edge of her seat. The love and support E.A., nickname for Elizabeth Anne, gave to the victim, while in some ways being a victim herself, was heart warming.
Elizabeth Anne was being courted by her next door neighbor David. Their

This is one story that covered some difficult issues characters faced but with a message of doing what was right despite the pain of exposing the truth. Elizabeth Anne (E.A,) was not happy with how things were going with her suitor David and finally had to take a stand. She did enjoy teaching her student Marta how to sew but sense she was hiding something. Will, one of the seven friends remaining, admire E.A. and became pursing her. They enjoyed adventures she had never experienced. E.A. trusted ...more

I was blown away by The Protective One. Gray did an amazing job handling the very sensitive subject of abuse. Not only did she center her story of Elizabeth and Will around the physical abuse Elizabeth's student suffers from her husband but she also shows how mental and verbal abuse can be just as damaging and traumatic.

I found myself lying awake long after I finished the book thinking about the characters. Gray showed us that every one of us is affected by abuse in some way. Whether we

If you are a fan of Amish stories than you need to check out author, Shelley Shepard Gray. I have read several books by this author and really enjoyed them all. This new book is no exception. This book can be read as a stand alone novel. You don't have to read these books in chronological order. However after reading this book, you will want to go back and read the prior novels or try another series by this author.

Elizabeth Anne aka E.A. was so kind. She showed it with Marta. Thus the reason I

The Protective One is the third inspiring story written by Shelley Shepard Gray in her continuing series, The Walnut Creek series. This story has everything a reader would look for in a story. Fantastic characters, love, disappointment, friendship, fear, and underlying mystery. The characters the author has created are beyond amazing. The story has a fast revolving storyline which definitely keeps the readers interest throughout the entire story. I also enjoyed the mini story in which bits and ...more

I liked this book well enough to still give it 5 stars.
I think the only thing that I didn't like about it was the use of the nickname E.A. I love the full name Elizabeth Anne so much better! It didn't make much sense to me. I guess it's because using a nickname doesn't give the character much personality.
Now if we're using the full name, this character really does have a lot to offer but this is just my opinion.
But overall I think the author has done a nice job on this tough subject. And a lot

I absolutely loved The Protective One. It is book three in the Walnut Creek series but could easily be read as a stand alone. There are so many things to like about the book. The characters are ones that you can easily picture in your minds because they are explained so well. Also the plot of this book is just so good and captures your attention and your heart right away.

The Protective One focuses on Elizabeth Anne (E.A.). She is one friend out of a group of eight friends. These friends have

Now this is the third book in this series, and these people have become friends to me, but if you are reading this one as a first, dont worry you really wont be lost. The author keeps you updated as to what has happened I the past, and we learn more about these friends of eight.
This is Elizabeth Annes and Wills story, and a side story of Marta, a woman in need.
Will Elizabeth Anne and Will overcome obstacles, namely David and family, and there are many chuckles here!

This story was great ! I read it in a couple hours because I couldn't put it down. Shelley Shepard Gray wrote a very detailed and very believable story and it covers some highly relevant topics today; such as depression, suicide, spousal abuse, etc,. She did it in such a way that you really feel for the characters without it being graphic and in the midst of it all she gives us a sweet story of falling in love with your best friend. I truly enjoyed this story and recommend reading it.

This book did not disappoint! Shelley Shepard Gray has done it again! Her writing sucks you in and holds on until the book is complete! This book has so much love in it. It also has fear, courage, and so much more! This book is very encouraging and it was a pleasure to read. It encourages the reader to do the right thing and stand on the right thing! I will definitely need to read the first books in this series because this one was so good. I want to learn all about the other characters that were mentioned in this story. I loved how there were a few stories going on that were interconnected. The romance was great but so was the intrigue. This handled the spousal abuse very well. This is a book that you want time to read because you wont want to put it down. I cant wait to read the next in the series. I received a copy of this book from the ...more

The Protective One is the third book in Shelly Shepard Gray's Walnut Creek Series. If you haven't had a chance to read the others yet, don't worry you can start here and follow along just fine.

Elizabeth Anne, or EA as her friends call her, seems to have her life all figured out. She and David have been dating for quite a while and everyone assumes the next logical step is an engagement and marriage. Their families are neighbors and have been friends for as long as anyone can remember, it just

Gray has mastered the ability to write sweet stories with real-world problems. Its a fantastic element of this story, and I dont know how she does it. Although there are elements of harsh problems abuse, stalking, family conflict theres not a part of the story that is too harsh or scary to read.

Thats not to say that I wasnt on the edge of my seat. I was completely invested in E.A.s story and couldnt wait to find out how resolution would be found. I read the second half of the book in one fell

The Protective One by Shelley Shepard Gray is the third installment of the Walnut Creek series. Set in Walnut Creek, Ohio, the story focuses on a group of seven friends, some Amish, some Mennonite and others English. The group is mourning the loss of a friend, the eighth member of the group, and trying to forge their own futures.

The Protective One focuses on Elizabeth Ann and Will, once friends and now learning their affection for one another runs a bit deeper. Initially a ruse to get rid of a

I usually enjoy Shepard Gray's Amish romances especially, Autumn's Promise which is still on my keeper shelf after almost a decade, so I always try to pick up her short but sweet books. The Protective One is book three in the Walnut Creek series, but the first I've read since falling behind on my reading last year. It's not necessary to have read the previous novels and novellas, but I highly recommend it. I was left wondering the backstories of a few of the characters in this book who I ...more

I always find it amazing how the author, Shelley Shepard Gray can put so much in each of her books. I never had a problem breezing through one of her books, even when I'm in a reading slump or have problems reading. Yet, there I go closing the last page of The Protective One and thinking how much is in there.

A simple Amish story, but packed tight with themes of change, love, courage and friendship, The Protective One is one story that readers will resonate with on one or more levels. There

This book is coming out at the right time. With the new release of Little women movie in another century, this book allows the reader a look into the world of the Mennonites and the Quaker ideology. The reader will find that modern problems with relationships is not limited to the city or the modern woman. E.A. finds that her long term suitor is not the ideal he protests he is. When she begins to question his behavior she finds it

A. begin to realize that their friendship might possibly be transforming into something much deeper. Theres a good mix of Amish and Mennonite friends ...more

Here we have another home run from Shelley Shepard Gray!!! I have been a long time reader of her work and I must say that this novel had a few turns that I was glad to see written about in the genre of Amish fiction. Elizabeth Ann (EA) has lost a friend and now comes to a crossroads where she makes the decision to walk away from the man her parents want her to marry. Needless to say, her parents are NOT happy and take every opportunity to try to change EA's mind, much to EA"s dismay. However, ...more

Even though this book started out a little slow for me, it quickly picked up and I didn't want to put it down. Still reeling from a death of a close friend, E.A. is growing more dissatisfied with her boyfriend David. When he insults her deceased friend, she breaks up with him. When E.A. tells her friend Will, he pretends that he is E.A.'s boyfriend. Before too long, they both realize that they have feelings for each other. David though isn't ready to walk away from E.A... At work, E.A. only real ...more

I have never read anything from Shelley Shepard Gray that I know of but after reading The Protective One she has become a voice that I want to read again. She tackled some strong subject matter (abuse) in this story and did so with such beautiful and skilled writing.

Book 3 in the Walnut Creek Series is another incredible novel by author Shelley Shepard Gray. You can read this as a stand alone, but I would highly recommend Books 1 & 2 simply because theyre so good.

Gray takes on a tough subject in this book but does it well. She doesnt go into incredible detail, which I appreciated. With well defined characters you will love, The Protective One shows us the importance of community and loyalty. Yet the characters are very human in their feelings as growth

The author gives us a great new book dealing with love, friendship, loss of friend through death, seeking of where life is leading and the subject of marital abuse.

These are all handled in a great way of showing protection through faith and love of friends and family.

I really enjoyed this story and read it in one day because I was so enthralled with the story line and characters. It had a layer of drama and suspense with two different characters which kept me hooked from chapter to chapter trying to figure out what they would do next.

I like EA and because she was Mennonite and not Amish, the story line and day to day duties were very relatable and had a more modern feel. I also liked Will and seeing their friendship grow during the book and how they helped
