Alcyran Chronicles #1

Taken By The Beast

Rate this book
Gemma’s life was nearly perfect. She’s just graduated from college and is heading off to graduate school in the fall. She and her best friends are taking a trip she’s always dreamed about. Only, nothing goes as planned. After being chased on the streets of Dublin by a freaking monster, they get sucked into a portal and wind up on another world. As in, not Earth. Now she can’t find her friends, but there is this really hot, naked guy who calls himself a king and is offering her aid.

There’s only one teensy little problem: He says she’s his mate and is planning on keeping her — forever. Oh, and there’s one more thing: He’s a beast most of the time. And Gemma has to decide if she’s willing to give up everything for the one man she’s meant to be with in the universe.

Author's Note: While this book is the first in a series, it can be read as a stand alone.

So I enjoyed this somewhat but for me, I did think there was something missing and as a result, I found myself doing some skimming.
So first this is fated love trope so was very instalove.
this didn't really bother me but it did make this very low angst mostly relying on plot direction for the action.
So the basic premise here Gemma along with two of her friends whilst taking a holiday in Dublin are chased into a portal by some monster and Gemma after fainting awakens naked minus her friend's in King Orion's bed.
So the portal has transported Gemma to a different world Destruna to be exact and not only is she stook here she is also the king of Alcoa's destined mate.
So this had almost a fantasy medieval feel to it and though the world-building was great this was let down slightly by the one-dimensional characters and predictable plotlines.
It wasn't badly written just a bit plausible and a tad monotonous.
This struggled quite a bit to keep my attention and I just wasn't feeling it.
On top of that, I was a tad bemused by Gemma herself she didn't seem to be the sharpest knife in the drawer despite her being a scientist and made some very illogical decisions based on her emotional state.
I mean running off without a plan or provisions in a strange new world is foolhardy at best or insane and stupid at worst.
I haven't yet decided if I am going to read the next in the series.
If you like your heroes romantic and are a fan of shifters: Massive Wolves in this instance then this may be one for you and as I said the writings good here just wasn't quite my thing.
I still enjoyed this but not as much as I thought I world initially from reading the blurb.

A new author to me, I am impressed. A meshing of sci-fi and paranormal, I really enjoyed reading this story, and will be getting the next two books in this series. Well written, with lots of adventure, hot steamy sex, and sexy alpha beasts, what more could you want.

Wasn’t a love it feeling but wasn’t a hate it feeling either. It was ..... good. Possibly part of what was missing for me was the chase. The push and pull of the hero and heroine.

Orion was odd for me. He was demanding and his punishment was a spanking alas he was that parent you see that tells their kid 1,352 times that they are going take their phone before they finally do. He talked the talk but as far as walking the walk he kinda crawled.

Gemma was spunky. Would have liked to see some of that spunk pay off but there was a tendency to laugh off her fierceness. If she is badass then let her be badass don’t let her constantly fail attempting to be.

Probably will try another read in this series, in hopes of finding stronger characters.

~ Torn between wants and needs ~

Celebrating graduation by starting the first leg of their two-week vacation in Dublin, Ireland before they all go their separate ways at different graduate schools, Emma and her two best friends hit the trendy bars after their dinner. They later find themselves tipsy, hopelessly lost, and nowhere close to their hotel when they are suddenly confronted with a huge winged beast. Emma soon faints, only to find herself alone in the presence of sinfully handsome Orion, King of the Cranach Clan. AND she is informed she is not on Earth, but on Planet Destruna, in his Kingdom of Alcyra.

Orion happens upon this woman, unconscious, while on a perimeter check of his castle grounds with his pack. She incites instant and intense lust resulting in his wolf’s mating call, as well as many questions regarding her puzzling appearance. She becomes his prisoner while he tries to uncover the reason behind her appearance on his lands. All evidence points to her being from the fabled realm of Earth. The most important task was to determine if she was involved with the Clovis, whom he had been warring with for a hundred years, and he was not above using seductive techniques to get the truth and the answers he wants. He offers something which she has been yearning for her whole life, but is she willing to pay the price for it?

Terrific introduction to a new supernatural world, with many questions raised and appetite whetted for the next installments!

Paranormal Romance with a twist
I love the writing of Anya so I was excited to read this new series! I love paranormal and sci-fi fantasy romances. This one did not disappoint. It was a page turner. I just couldn’t put it down. I love the different worlds that Anya introduced and she laid the groundwork for the next books in this series. Gemma and two friends, Moira and Anne, go on a trip of a lifetime to Ireland and then things go a bit wonky. They fall through a portal into a new world. Gemma is separated from her friends on this new world. Gemma meets the man of her dreams but he isn’t just a man, he’s a wolf-shifter Alpha-King of Cranach Clan. Orion, is the King-Alpha of Cranach Clan and has just met his fated mate. He finds Gemma unconscious in a field. There are so many sub-plots going on in this book to keep you interested. There the surface shifter, fated mate troupe, the alien world needs human females to regenerate their species troupe, and good vs evil troupe. I can’t wait to read the next one which appears to bring in a vampire into the mix. Of course, there’s a lot of sexy fun times for Gemma and Orion. I recommend this book.

Okay Read

This is the first book by Ms. Summers that I've read. While I enjoyed the story for the most part, it was difficult to connect with the characters. I'm not quite able to put my finger on why. It has all the things I love shifters, strange beasts, witches, love, smexy time... I'm definitely going to try another story by Ms. Summers as I can see quality storytelling here.

When it comes to Anya Summers, I would read her books more often than not, because she has proven to me that she's a good author and her stories are entertaining.

Taken by the Beast was a good, entertaining story but it was not up to the standard that I had for the author. I don't see a grammatical error, which I really appreciate, but I saw some things that didn't add up in my brain.

The characters in this book are true to themselves. They don't act one way just to act in another way later, they are consistent and I really liked that.

The story itself was interesting, not a new concept but it was done in a way that kept me hooked and reading from beginning to end.

You may be asking yourself, what are the things that didn't add up in my brain?

1. Gemma was supposed to speak an old form of the language but there were no communication problems.

2. The way she talked was strange to Orion but he sure picked her way of speaking fast enough. And sometimes he reverted back to his old fashion way of speaking.

Overall, I read this book in one sitting. I enjoyed it. I had a good time with the characters, the world, and the plot. I want to read more about the other creatures in this new world of Anya Summers. I want to know what happened to Gemma's friends. I want to keep following this series.

Those things for me are an indication that even with the little things that didn't add up in my brain, the author knows her craft very well.

I would recommend this book if you like shifter mate romances and strong, stubborn female characters.

This is Book One in Ms. Summers’ new series, “The Alcyran Chronicles”. Here, instead of to a steamy BDSM Club (read her other series, they are hot!), she takes us to a new world, literally.

With a mixture of Science Fiction and Fantasy, she takes us to a world that is somewhat like ours, but very not. Throw in hot Alpha males who know how to cherish their feisty counterparts but they both have their own problems and secrets and you have the start of a compelling plot line that will arc over the series.

Ms Summers likes her HEA but she usually puts the main characters through quite a bit before they get there. I liked this novel, it was a quick, fun romp through another's perspective. For 18+.

There were a lot of things that I really liked about this. And there were things that I really didn't. So, split the difference and I'll call it 3 stars.

The world building is pretty neat. I like all the different tribes/clans, and the magics that surround them. I'd've loved a little more uniqueness when it came to language, jargon, cultural clashes. That's always one of my favorite parts of fantasy or sci-fi stories like this. Yes, they covered it by saying 'oh, her language is like ours from ages ago' but it still would have been nice to see a little more culture clashing, Orion struggling with all Gemma's slang, that sort of thing. But that's also my personal preference with these sorts of stories.

As to what I didn't like... Gemma. For so many reasons.

First off, the whole scientist thing. So many references to "her scientific mind" and how much she wanted her microscope to study this new place, yadda yadda yadda. The repetition was frustrating. Like, OK already, I get it. She's supposed to be intelligent and analytical and not prone to buying into dimensional black holes and legends and such. But it was overused. Very heavy handed, really. Especially when there's so many other words that you can use to get the point across without being nearly so repetitive.

Plus, it was like someone was writing who had no idea about science. It wasn't even mentioned for the first third of the book what sort of scientist she was studying to be, and the things that she was curious about covered so many different disciplines, it was ridiculous. I mean, astrophysicists don't really study geology and plant life, but Gemma was talking about it all. Astophysicists focus on physics. Yes, some chemistry too, but not the full wide spectrum of things that Gemma was talking about - minerology, botany, the constant references to 'her microscope'. It just felt really weird, like it was written by someone who'd no idea about the subject.

So, after all that heavy emphasis that Yes, she's a Scientist and Thus Intelligent... she's really an idiot. OK, I get that she's stressed and panicked and emotional, but who in their right mind runs off into the woods with no supplies, no food, no shoes, no plan, and no idea about the risks and dangers of the area she's in?????? You don't do that with woods on Earth, let alone on another planet. Did she really think that aimlessly wandering through the woods would miraculously bring her to both (A) her friends and (B) an explanation of how they got there and/or a way to get home? I was just over her at that point.

Still, it was a fun little read and some unique aspects to the world. Plus all my favorite points - no cheating, no ex or OW/OM drama, no stupidity from immature lack of communication. Yes, insta-love (paranormal/fantasy romance with that whole mate bond thing). Alternating 3rd person POV. Not a cliffhanger for the main couple - they get their HEA - but enough treads are laid out for future books, including number 2 in the series, Claimed by the Beast (Moira's story). I'm hoping we get around to Gunnar's story after we're done with Gemma and her friends!

Would I read more in this series? Yes, especially if they're more free Kindle finds. I just hope that the female leads are better than Gemma was.

So this wasn't bad. I did like it more as the story progressed. The beginning aggravated the hell out of me because of a pet peeve of mine. I absolutely hate it when a character is painted as brave because they are determined to escape wherever it is that they're being held and pretty much save the day. It bugs me because how in the world is it a good idea to take off into a completely unknown alien planet/ship/whatever when you have absolutely no clue as what or who you will encounter or if it's even a place you can survive? It's just so goddamn stupid. As Gemma would prove quite well here. The only other thing that really annoyed me was how often it was repeated about the scientist inside Gemma or it was her scientific mind driving her curiosity. We hear it over and over and over and she's just too stupid to be a scientist, okay?

Gemma and her two best friends are on a vacation in Ireland before the three of them go their separate ways to pursue their chosen fields. Gemma was the one that convinced them to go there instead of where they wanted to go, so when the group of them is transported to another world after being chased by a terrifying creature, she feels like it's her fault they ended up there and her responsibility to find them. Which is all well and good, but her mindset about it got really tedious really fast.

Orion is the first person Gemma comes into contact with in this new world. Only, he was in his huge wolf form so she immediately expects to get eaten and passes out. Orion is the king of his people, most of which have the ability to shift into wolves. It's because of that wolf that he knows immediately that Gemma is his mate. Something that hasn't happened with any of his people for hundreds of years. He wants nothing more than to claim her as his, but a few things are holding him back. First, he refuses to force a bonding and wants her to want him. Then there's the whole where did she come from thing and the real possibility of her being an enemy spy.

From the moment that Gemma wakes up in Orion's bed and sees him, she wants him. But she refuses to act on that and is determined to find her friends. Which would have been all well and good if she didn't end up almost getting herself killed because she has no idea what she's doing. Obviously Orion saves her, and the two of them come to an agreement about her friends and their relationship. But it's maybe only a day later when the enemy makes a move that forces Orion back to his keep. At this point though, the story got better. I was quite glad that Gemma made the choice she did as fast as she did because it led to a bunch of other good things happening. And she also became a lot easier to read about because she was no longer fighting Orion at every turn.

There is no big battle or anything of the sort here. Sure, there was some fighting but it was mostly background really. I did like the ending though. We find more humans, learn someone might not actually be as bad as was thought, and find out that a banished enemy is on the move again.

While I did mostly enjoy this, I have no great desire to read the rest of the series. But I suppose if they're ever free I wouldn't be adverse to giving them a go too.

I am voluntarily writing this review for this book I received through Booksprout’s ARC

Gemma was in love with this country. Ireland was all she expected and maybe more. Gemma was on a holiday with her two best friends and they were staying in Dublin for a couple of days. Gemma and her friends try to find their way back to the hotel. All three were panicked when they saw the winged creature. The walls they were against started to fall away and there was this black hole. Gemma awoke not knowing where she was or how she got there except the big man in front of her. She told him that she wanted to find her friends and asked where they were. He told her that she was on earth and that she will be staying there with him. He was the king so he asks his general to see if they could find her friends. Something in Orion was growing stronger he wanted to be with her he was so drawn to her. They were taken back when he mentioned The fabled Earth. Orion knew that she wasn’t a Clovis who they have been at war with for a long time and now at peace. He knew that he met his mate he knew it in his heart and she called to his beast. Gemma made her way out of the castle towards the woods where she gets cornered by two large cats. Orion finds out she is missing and when he finds her he had to take down the cats in his wolf form. Gemma had no idea that the wolf was Orion that was the king. Orion knew that the mating call was so strong. Gemma finds out that Orion was the wolf she had been with as she tried to find her friends even though they might not be on the same planet. Orion is getting closer to Gemma but told her if they took it any further he didn’t know if he stop himself from fully claiming her which meant she would live with him as his mate forever. Gemma realizes he would keep her safe when they got back to the castle an emissary from another clan had made her way to his castle. The women was beautiful but he only thought of his mate. Gemma was feeling really horrible so Orion went to see the Oracle. Gemma survives the mating ritual with more strength and heightened awareness. Orion tells her he will be back after the arrangements were made. When he gets back to his quarters he finds Gemma missing he finds out that the Clovis have taken her. Orion goes to rescue Gemma only to find her with other missing earth women. Will they make it back to the castle?

I loved this story that starts off with Gemma and her best friends Moira and Anna visiting Ireland before they go on to their post grad studies in the fall. After drinking a bit much and walking on unfamiliar streets, the three friends get lost but find they are being followed by a dark winged monster! The three friends end up disapoearing into a dark fog, then Gemma wakes to find a big
naked adonis in a land she doesn't recognize. The adonis introduces himself as King Orion and tells her she is on the planet Destruna in his kingdom of Aleyra, then she passes out. Next she finds she is in a big bed in a gorgeous bedroom of the King and he plans on keeping her there forever. Orion consults with the Oracle, Akina who verifies that he is indeed the mate of Gemma, the human. Gemma is only interested in finding her friends Moira and Anna as she feels responsible for their safety. Gemma escapes the bedroom and tries to find her friends but she travels into the woods and is confronted with wild animals that want to kill and eat her but suddenly and enormous wolf comes to her rescue and becomes her protector. Orion, aka the wolf has to protect his fated mate but also needs to reveal to her that he is a shifter. Gemma takes the news that her wolf protector is the King Orion, and that they are mates very well, but makes a deal that she will only agree to be his mate if she can find her friends first, Orion agrees to the deal but searching for the human women is put on hold when a summons comes from the Clovis, the enemy of Orion's kingdom. The Clovis are not to be trusted, but they claim to have human women. The wolf shifters must face the Clovis to find out if they truely have humans, but must be very careful of the female Clovis ruler and warrior women who use magical spells to fight their battles. There is so much action and adventure and steaming hot sex between Orion and Gemma that just keeps your interest as you wonder who will do what next and where the other human women are or even if they are safe. I enjoyed this new PN, sci-fi trip that Ms. Summers has taken us on and looking forward to the next book due in the fall.

Taken by the Beast is the first book In the Alcyran series. If you enjoy a sci-fi, fantasy, erotic romance, this has them all. I respect Ms. Summers work because, the plots are intriguing, the characters have a lot of appeal and there is always a happy ending where the heroine always gets her hero.

Gemma, an orphaned college science graduate out for a trip of her dreams with her two best friends. Gemma wasn’t likeable at first. Too me, she’s a know-it-all in a strange land she had no idea of the dangers she could get into. That didn’t work for me. But, she changes her attitude after experiencing “the heat”.

King Orion of the Cranach Clan, funny, sexy and dominate. Gemma is his mate and he wants her. I love reading in the male’s point of view. I’ve never read a plot where the shifters are able to talk in shifted form, but it works.

Gemma is on holiday with her two closest friends. Somehow they are chased into another time and place. There, the ladies are separated, but Gemma is found by her mate. Attraction happens that brings Orion and Gemma together but, dark forces conspire to tear them apart. They find out Gemma and her friends were not the only ones that came from Earth to this place, and all the while her two best friends are still out there.

I love the open ending along with the happy ending; it leaves the door open for the next book in the series. There are a lot of other characters to choose from but I have my eye on Gunnar.

This was my first book I read by this author and I found it well written. the H +h were strong believable characters in this paranormal/sci-fi romance that was a enjoyable read that I couldn't put down. Gemma and her friends - Moira and Anna - decide to vacation in Ireland after graduating from college. They decide to visit a pub and on their way back to their hotel they get lost and some flying monster appears chasing them down a alley that dead ends. All a sudden a black portal appears and they enter it to escape the monster but through the portal they get separated. This book deals with what happens to Gemma who wakes up with a huge wolf over her. When she sees it she screams and faints and wakes up later naked in bed with a man in the room who introduces himself as King Orion. Gemma wants to find her friends and Orion wants to keep her and check her story out about how she arrived in his territory because she's his mate, but Gemma escapes and Orion follows. What happens next is full of challenges and romance while they get to know each other. Does Gemma find her friends? Do Orion and Gemma become mated? Since I love this genre, I'll definitely keep my eye out for the next book in this series about Moira experiences on the world of the planet Destruna. I volunteer to read and review this ARC.

What a nightmare for Gemma! Vacationing with her two friends and sightseeing in Ireland, she gets separated and lost after getting a bit tipsy at a bar/pub. Chased by a monster like beast complete with wings, they panic, run, and fall into a dark swirling portal. She faints, and wakes up alone, sans clothes, on a pallet in a stone room.

Gemma's alpha male hero, is in the shape of a large gorgeous erotic looking stranger. Orion, King of a bizarre world that certainly isn't the Ireland she knows and desperately wants to return to. To give Orion credit, he doesn't know who or why Gemma has landed in his world and is as suspicious and wary of her as she is of him.

This fun and adventurous fantasy/paranormal tale was quite an enjoyable read. Not normally the genre I read, I found myself turning the pages quickly wanting to know where this tale story would take me! I liked that this was told in dual POVs, and Orion was quite human in his thoughts. The environment had a middle ages feel to it even though Orion has confirmed she is not on Earth, but on the planet Destruna.

Gemma finds true love with Orion, and has to make a decision that will affect the rest of her life. This was a whirlwind of an adventure with rival clans and evil betrayals, witches, and wolves, and shifters, oh my!

On vacation before they start graduate school Gemma and her best friends Moira and Anna embark on a trip to Ireland.
Gemma has always felt a connection to Ireland but has no idea why. She was orphaned and not much was known about her.or her parents.
Off to enjoy the beginning of their vacation a few drinks and good times they would never imagine what lay ahead for them.
While walking back to their hotel they find they are having trouble navigating through the streets it all looks the same after a few drinks.
Further and further they walk and Gemma starts to feel like their are lost and this is not good. When the girls hear something strange they
look up to see a monster with wings following them. They scream and run Gemma in the lead pulling her friends along trying to find safety. When the see that the monster has moved them in the direction it wanted herding them to a dead end. As it gets closer to the girls a swirling black mass of fog erupts behind them, Gemma sees no way out and convinces her friends to take the leap in. Gemma makes her jump through only to find her friends not there but a new monster instead.

sci-fi meets paranormal

This is a pretty good book. It was a well meshed mix of sci-fi and paranormal. There are plenty of hot shifters in this story and our hero who happens to be king is just yummy. I can't wait for future books to see what all makes up the other clans. our heroine gets some background And history of this world And it's people but what she gets just seems like the top of the iceberg And I hope we get more of that in the future. Now the one issue I had with the heroine was And seemed either forgetful or indecisive at some points And the way she went back And forth with a few things I found frustrating. Also for me this book definitely felt like there was more inner dialogue going on than exterior dialogue directly amongst the characters which wasn't bad just not a style I read a lot. now the clans that are mentioned and the types of powers they posses help add to that mystical paranormal feel while some of the magic and portals as well as questions of is this a different dimension or just a different planet help add to the sci-fi feel. There's so much that could happen in this world and it will be interesting to see what happens next. Overall good book would recommend.

Gemma and her two friends, Moira and Anna are in Ireland on a vacation before continuing their graduate studies. After eight years together as coeds they will be separated since they will be going to different schools. On their first night in Dublin they are returning to the hotel when they are accosted by a monster flying overhead. They are backed against a brick wall which seems to liquify and they all fall through. When Gemma lands she sees a huge wolf who howls. Then she faints. The wolf is King Orion who is shocked to discover this different female is his mate. When Gemma awakens she wants to leave to look for her friends. He tells her she can&;t leave till he verifies she is who she says she is. He leaves and while he is gone to consult with his generals, Gemma plans and executes her escape. King Orion finds her as a wolf and rescues her. Then they go on the journey to find her friends and that;s when Gemma comes to learn how Orion can shift and that she is his mate. It;s a different world and customs and scary situations that Gemma must face.
WOW!! This is an exciting story that will hold your attention to the last page and leave you wanting more.
Fantastic story and read!!!

Gemma and her adopted sister and their friend Anna Moira were on a post graduation trip to Ireland. On their first night when they're walking to their hotel in the middle of the night they see a humanoid monster with wings. It chases them to a dead end street. The monster is about to kill them when suddenly a black hole opens behind them and they enter it to escape. They fall into another world and each of the three women are transported into a different place. Gemma is transported into the forest where she encounters a massive wolf. She faints and the wolf turns out to be king Orion her mate.
This novel is about their relationship. While searching for Moira and Anna they fall in love. The king's enemy the Clovis make trouble for the mated pair.
This an enjoyable story with werewolves, vampires and witches. This an erotica. I liked it and am looking forward to the next novel, Moira and the vampire King's story.

This story follows Gemma and Orion. Gemma is on a trip with some friends and after being chased by a monster they fall through a portal to another world. There she loses her friends but is found by Orion. He is the king of one of the clans of this new land she finds herself in and knows her to be his fated mate. All she wants is to find her friends and get back home. Orion promises her he will find her friends if she mates him. Another clan on this foreign world wants complete control and is opposed to Orion and his clan meeting the Earth females.
This story has quite a bit of action and has several surprises as time goes. We do get to meet many of Orion's clan members as well as find out how these friends ended up on this world. This story has an HEA but does give a clue into the next story in the series.

When Gemma Moira and Anna are visiting Ireland before they begin their post graduate studies they have no idea what is about to befall them when they are whisked from the streets int a dark fog and when Gemma awakes she is in a in a land she doesn't know with a tall naked man stood beside her she promptly passes out When next she wakes she is a bedroom and the same man is there He is King Orion and his secret is that he is a wolf shifter and she is now in his kingdom of Aleyra on the planet of Destruna. When she tries to escape to find her friends Orion has to rescue her once again, he will keep on doing this as she is his fated mate. There is plenty of drama and action and don't forget super sexy scenes in this book as they search for her lost friends.

Gemma and her two best friends, Moira and Anna, had discussed going on a trip after graduating and starting graduate school. Really, Anna had wanted to go to the Bahamas and Gemma wanted to go to Ireland. Moira having always been the "big girl" of any crowd, especially amongst the three of them, was insecure about her body image thanks to her weight and her mother. She immediately sided with Gemma and so it was decided, Ireland it was for a two week adventure. Their last hoorah as the Three Musketeers before they were separated for the first time in eight years. So off to Ireland they went and that is when the adventure began. Magical beings, vampires, witches, shapeshifting wolves all on a new planet. Anya Summers has given us a magically induced storyline with characters that are so filled with quirks, insecurities and personality it's hard not to fall in love with them.

I love this author. She writes interesting and intriguing books with good characters that have flaws and are usually realistic. I'm not sure this is realistic but it is fun. This is a new world for her and she has created an interesting one. It is more about the shifter mating/romance than the actual world in this book so there are questions. But there is a second book which should solidify the details and add more depth so it is easier understood. I did like the relationship between the two main characters. She is feisty and strong...excellent! He is an alpha male who likes his way. They had a great dynamic.

Wow a absolute must to read. Im a fan of this Authors and when this came out i was stoked that she finally wrote it. Its a different scene shifters in another universe, but its exciting and as the plot thickens the characters are lead into a mating claim that could lead to death.

Gemma and her two friends step though a porthole in order to escape the creatures that are after them. Transported to another world Gemma awakens to find herself alone and her two friends missing. Orion is the king, and on seeing Gemma he knows she is his mate, but all Gemma wants to do is find her two friends. So a deal is made, but danger is all around and Orion must claim her before others find out.

This really is worth while reading looking forward to the other books. Definately worth 5 stars plus
