The Duke's Twin

A Regency Short Story

Rebecca Livingston has a problem: Her mother is desperate to marry her prettier, more talented, younger sister Lydia, off to the handsome Duke of Wiltshire but when Rebecca and her family arrive at the grand ducal estate it’s Rebecca who falls right into the handsome arms the duke himself. Rebecca tries to avoid the seductive duke but neither she nor he can keep their hands off each other. Her mother is furious, her sister is thrilled for her – but can it be possible that the duke wants Rebecca as much as she discovers she wants him?

Miles Beresford has a wicked reputation, but will do anything for his twin brother Justin, the Duke of Wiltshire. Even if that means assuming his identity for a week to suss out the intentions of some young marriageable chits fresh from the London season. But when Rebecca Livingston stumbles out of a coach and into his arms, he realizes that he might be in serious trouble – and that playing an imaginary duke to win her over may be slightly over his head. Does Rebecca love him or the dukedom, and can he bear to lose her if he admits he’s just the Duke’s Twin?

➕ What I liked :

Nothing really.

➖ What I disliked:

Even for a short story this is too rushed and over the top.

Cringey.

Very predictable and formulaic.

The ending felt unfinished/incomplete.

Rather immature main characters.

The heroine is too insecure (about being “plain”.)

Annoying heroine.

Repetitive.

Bland main characters.

I wanted this book to continue, Alas it a novella so no such luck , but it’s a wonderful read.

Lauren as always puts such passion into her characters and situations that you feel as if you are a secret spectator, watching round the corner, seeing all that goes on and feeling their emotions.

A wonderful little book , loved it.

4.5⭐️’s : 🎧 Read Me Romance 🎧

Well tighten my bodice & fluff my petticoats - I’ve apparently been living under a rock! This was my first historical romance and it was sooo bloody sexy!

The flirting, the banter, the courtship, that thing that goes down when they’re in the gazebo... Jaayyy-susss! No lie, I sat behind the wheel of my horse, listening with a legit heaving bosom - ANNNND - the words ‘cock, dick, pussy or clit’ hadn’t been mentioned once!

I was hooked from the phrase “vigorous fox hunt” - and, I mean, why wouldn’t you be? 😜 - but when at the end of ep one when Miles laments, “Bloody hell, what the devil have I got myself into?”, in that voice of Shane East’s that gave me a mega “British Damon Salvatore” vibe lady-boner, I near fell back and lit a metaphorical cigarette!!

Loved the set-up, loved the gentry-polite while also being deliciously saucy anticipation and build-up, and I loved both Miles & Becca.

Because I was hooked - which for me can lead to being greedy (it’s important to acknowledge and embrace your imperfections 😆) - I also wanted just a little more of a neatly tied bow. Like, what happened with Justin & Lydia? Did all of Becca’s dreams come true? And, did Matilda’s (anyone else picture a Regency period Delores Umbridge? 🤣) turban fly off as she collapsed with the vapours when things came to light?

Won’t be my last Lauren Smith read. Nor my last foray into, what is for me, the untapped world of HR!

This twin-switch shenanigans regency romance was such a good time! I’m always a sucker for a good ‘Reformed Rake falls for Plain Jane’ story, and this novella also had a decent sprinkling of ‘MMC can’t believe the FMC’s family overlooks his darling’. Plus, I listened to the audiobook, and it’s hard to go wrong with Shane East as one of the narrators.

Thanks to Bluestockings Read for the rec!

I wished this story was longer but alas it is just a short story. It ends somewhat abruptly. I wish it had a better ending.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author. This in no way affects my opinion of this book which I read and reviewed voluntarily.

Justin and Miles are twins, but they could not be more different. Justin was now the Duke of Wiltshire, all decency and goodness. Miles on the other hand was unruly, a bounder, rogue and devilish.
"Miles, you must save me" Justin told his brother. What could that mean? Come to find out Justin was in financial straits from the debt his father had left and needed to marry a heiress. Miles had no idea and was glad to help but Justin insisted.
He wanted him to switch places with him as the two Livingston sister came to visit so Justin could see if they only wanted the title.
Sisters Rebecca and Lydia arrive with their parents to visit the Duke with hopes he will become enamored with the beautiful sister Lydia. But when Becca stumbles into the Dukes arms, it seems fate may have been sealed at that moment,
A delightful novella that brought a smile and made my heart happy!

I love the twin twist in this story with Justin and Miles are twins. Justin was now the Duke of Wiltshire and he asks Miles his twin for help. Miles is the unruly rogue of the family, but he’ll only go so far to help is brother. Justin wanted him to switch places with him to see if they the only wanted the title or could one of them they really love him. Miles realizes as soon as Rebecca Livingston stumbles out of a coach and into his arms that he’s in trouble. He soon doubts the wisdom of playing the duke does Rebecca love him or the dukedom, does she want him or not? This is an enchanting novella. I voluntarily read and reviewed this story.

I don't often get into this genre of romance, but I enjoyed this one. It was on the short side but it was sweet.

I liked the twins aspect and how the main twin was drawn to Becca rather than her prettier sister.
As for the age gap, the twins are 34/35 , Becca is 20 and Lydia is 18.

There is not enough Sane East narration is this, I would have been fine if he had done the whole story.

I can see reading more from this author.

The first historical featured on Read Me Romance. Good, not great. I did like the identical twins twist, though the switching places trope has been done often.

One thing I love about the Read Me Romance podcast is how many different genres of romance I've been introduced to through listening each week. This is the first historical book I've ever read/listened to, and it's opened up a whole new world for me.

The Duke's Twin is follows the romance of Miles and Rebecca and is set in England in the mid-1800s.
Rebecca Livingstone is a shy and studious young woman, the opposite of her prettier, more outgoing sister Lydia. Her family are invited to visit Justin, the Duke of Wiltshire, who is looking for a wife, and their mother is keen to marry Lydia to the Duke.
Justin wants a wife who doesn't only want him for his title, so he convinces his identical twin Miles to switch places with him, so he can see if Lydia would still be interested in him if he was not the Duke. Miles, pretending to be the Duke, meets Rebecca and immediately falls for her. This cause a problem because:
1. He is supposed to be scouting out Lydia for his brother;
2. Both brothers are lying to the sisters about their real identity;
3. The girls' mother is not happy that Rebecca is the one to have caught the eye of the 'Duke'.

I really enjoyed the historical feel of this, the writing was very authentic and set the scene really well. I thought all the characters were well developed with distinct personalities. I liked that Lydia wasn't made into a villain, like in many books with this kind of plot, although I wish we got a little more sister bonding time. It would have been great to see them discuss their feelings for the brothers. I'm hoping there will be a sequel to this so we get the reaction of their parents when they find out that Miles and Justin played switcheroo!

I know so many people have swooned over the narrator's British accents, but as an English person myself, I thought they kind of just sounded like your average newscasters lol. Even so, they did a great job of portraying Miles and Rebecca.

The Duke’s Twin was about Miss Rebecca Livingston, eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Livingston, and Lord Miles Beresford, twin brother to His Grace Justin Beresford, the Duke of Wiltshire.
Side Note: The author, once again, mistakenly had her characters address the Duke as Lord Wiltshire. However, Duke's are NEVER addressed as LORD anything. They are always addressed as either "His Grace" or "Your Grace".
When Justin approached his brother, Miles, with a favor, Miles was just a tad amused and a touch upset. Justin, having inherited the ducal title, had also inherited their father's debts. Unknown to Miles, Justin had been struggling to pay off the late duke's gambling debts and, therefore, was seeking out an heiress to refill the family coffers. Justin had invited a family to his estate to vet out a young lady to see if she would be the duchess he needed. What he wanted Miles to do was switch places with him for a week so that he, Justin, could peruse the two sisters to see if either one would suit, although he had been planning on courting Lydia, the younger, prettier sister. Mile agreed to the switch, though he wasn't too happy about it.
Rebecca, although the eldest of the two sisters, was considered by her parents to be plain and not worthy of finding a husband. They both seemed to preferred her youngest daughter and, therefore, were more eager to see her wed.
This book was short but sweet. Some of it was a bit mixed up as if the author had switched the place of two chapters. While the storyline was intriguing, it also felt a bit unfinished. The ending left much to be desired and incomplete.
The characters were a bit naive as well...a bit immature for their respective roles. Perhaps if a few more chapters with a bit more information had been included, then maybe it would have been worthy of a five-star rating.

Alright, I've said it once, and I will say it again, I don't do historical romance...until now. I have yet to finish a historical romance, I usually get lost in the old age speak, bored with the stagnant relationships, and DNF real fast. But Lauren Smith has brought me to the light because I absolutely adored this quick, little audiobook and now I am over here considering giving historical romances a second chance.

While the story is quick and there is a bit of insta-love, I enjoyed it immensely. I love the sibling dynamic between Rebecca and Lydia and Justin and Miles. One seems to be the playful, rebellious sibling while the other is tender-hearted and kind. The relationships start off at a stagnant pace and quickly sky-rocket to sizzling. I was a blushing, giggling mess listening to the story.

The plot itself is full of enough tension and drama to seamlessly support the story but still allow enough time for the characters to develop. Things, while rushed...I guess they were rushed back in the day...flowed nicely and I never sat there questioning did they know each other. Rebecca and Lydia's mother was a horrid hag who needed to jump off a cliff but she didn't deter her daughters from their happily ever afters.

There was plenty of sexual chemistry between Miles and Rebecca and I loved how it was balanced with laughter and witty banter. These two just meshed so well together that it had my heart swooning. Seriously...I think I might go pick up another historical romance now, thank you Lauren Smith for redeeming the genre for me!

A short fun read that I read in a sitting. The characters were very likeable & had plenty of depth, not easy to do in a novella. I love it when a rake falls & Miles falls hard. The pace is good & I loved it from the moment Justin asked for help.
My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read

Sometimes I'm in the mood for a quick read that gives almost instant satisfaction. This little story fits that perfectly. The Duke's Twin is the kind of story that you can easily read in one sitting and you can get from the first meeting to the happily ever after pretty quickly.
Miles and his brother, the Duke of Wiltshire are identical twins. They switch places so that the Duke can discover if the women that he thinks he might like to marry can fall in love with him for who he is, rather than just because he's a Duke. Miles soon discovers that while his brother might be perfect for Lydia, just as he had hoped, her older sister Rebecca is the woman for him.
This was a sweet little romance. Miles is apparently a Rake, but he certainly doesn't act like much of one here. Well, aside from the fact that he might get a little 'friendly' with our heroine, but his intentions are at least pure, so we'll let him off with that.
As with all short stories that I enjoy, there was room here for more development of the story and more to happen, but it still worked well in this short format.
All in all a good, quick, little read that's sure to put a smile on your face.

3.5 stars. Quickie review: This was another audiobook listen from the Read Me romance podcast. The Duke's Twin is a historical romance featuring a set of twins, one who is a Duke and one more of a playboy. The men change places for a weekend, switching identities, in which they are to entertain a family with two eligible daughters in consideration of marriage, one of whom is a "spinster" and one is the pretty, accomplished one. The Duke wants to get to know both sisters as if he was not a Duke, to see if they like him for himself and not his status. The hero and heroine are the playboy and spinster. They were really cute together and I liked them a lot. The hero let the heroine know who he really was, he was forgiven and they got their HEA. I just wanted more. I wanted to see them sharing the news of their relationship with the heroine's parents who put her down all the time. Still, this was an enjoyable and entertaining book.

This is a quick and very enjoyable read. Twin brothers and two sisters reaching out to see what their future could be. I loved the H/h personalities. They were lively, fun and forthright. Simple premise of the four of them falling in love was entertaining to read. I felt bad for our heroine as her mother favored her younger sister over her. When the mother would speak with her it was almost mean and cruel. But in essence was pity that she was not as accomplished or beautiful like her younger sister. It broke my heart. Thank goodness our hero could see past all that and liked her for who she was. She was fun. witty, loved to read, played the harp (which he loved because his dearly departed mother played the harp also) and she never walked away from a challenge. She blossomed around him without her mother around. A great short story. I highly recommend it. I received an Advanced Readers Copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.

I AM SUCH A SUCKER FOR HISTORICAL ROMANCES!!!! This was so great especially because of the relationship between Rebecca and Lydia. I love stories where the sisters in them are so devoted to each other and completely love each other. This book actually reminded me a lot of Julia Quinn's "The Viscount Who Loved Me," because of the sister dynamic and how the heroine was the supposedly "plain" one with her younger sister being the beauty. Also, the tension and passion between Rebecca and Miles was AMAZING and the smut was so so good. The only reason this doesn't get a full five stars is because, honestly, I wanted it to be a full length book. I thing since it was a novella it felt super rushed, and I wanted more time to develop the relationship, the pining, and the tension. But this is my second favorite Read Me Romance book so far (first being "American Squire" by Sierra Simone. That was so incredibly sexy and well written, it can't be beaten).

The Duke's Twin: 3.5 stars

Synopsis:
The Duke of Wiltshire has found a potential bride, but he wants to know if this woman can love him for who he is, and not just his title. So, he asks his twin brother, Miles, to trade places with him and keep this lady's sister, Rebecca, entertained while he gets to know his potential bride. Miles agrees, having no idea just how much he will enjoy spending time with Rebecca. Now he fears revealing the truth might just ruin everything.

My Thoughts:
I thought that this was a cute premise and I enjoyed the read. I don't have a lot to say against it but I also cannot rave because of how incredibly short it was. I loved all of our characters so much and found Miles and Rebecca to be super cute together. I really would have liked another 25 pages or so! But overall, it was a fun, quick read.
