Every happy teenage girl is the same, while every unhappy teenage girl is miserable in her own special way.

Meet Anna K. At seventeen, she is at the top of Manhattan and Greenwich society (even if she prefers the company of her horses and Newfoundland dogs); she has the perfect (if perfectly boring) boyfriend, Alexander W.; and she has always made her Korean-American father

An Anna Karenina retelling with a Gossip Girl vibe! Glitz, glamour, drama, betrayal, opulence, infidelity, sex, drugs, and romance. Jenny Lee has done a stellar job of taking this Russian classic and giving it a modern and diverse twist. Admittedly Ive never read the original, but I did take a look at the Spark Notes and Miss Lee really did a remarkable job in the retelling. I was completely sucked into this riveting tale of decadence and betrayal.

As entertaining as the story was there was also

No one @ me because I didn't know the plot of Anna Karenina, which is what this YA retelling is based on, but wow, am I fucking emo.

It's been months since I've had so much fun with a YA contemporary where it completely absorbed me, entertained me, and kept me wondering what would happen next. This book is jam-packed with an array of characters (this book even has a character list for you to keep track of who's who) whose antics get them into hot water as they try to navigate the ever-changing

I suspect this is going to be a very polarizing book...

This modern YA retelling of Anna Karenina is what I would call The Goldfinch meets Gossip Girl, but with awareness of racism and privilege, not to mention a much more diverse cast of characters. It is smart, darkly tragic, but manages to end on a bittersweet note. This is a book that will make you feel things and leave you thinking, regardless of whether you love it or hate it. Set among super-elite teens of Manhattan, we enter a world

ARC received in exchange for an honest review.

Anna K is depicted as a modern retelling of Anna Karenina, but I think to describe it as such does both books a disservice. The classic in Russian literature encompasses a wide cast, including a look into the social commentary of its time, with a doomed love affair at its heart between Anna, Vronsky and her husband Alexei. Its well written, full of tension and drama, complex and compelling. Anna K is, unfortunately, not. While treading a similar plot

Anna K is a retelling of Tolstoy's Anna Karenina , set among rich, privileged teenagers of New York City and Greenwich, Connecticut society.

Anna is the beautiful, smart daughter of a powerful South Korean businessman. She mostly prefers the company of her horses and show dogs to the society elite, so she attends a fancy prep school in Connecticut, as opposed to her older brother, Steven, who attends a private school in New York City.

Anna has been dating Alexander since she was 14

This was so much fun to read! I didn't know how much I needed a YA retelling of Anna Karenina until I read this one. I believe the perfect way to describe this book is to tell you to imagine a mix amongst Gossip Girl, Crazy Rich Asians and Anna Karenina. That's pretty much it and I mean this in the best way possible.
I think the author was a true master in capturing the

Trashy and messy are two things that I thrive on because it's my life but this was more like a dumpster fire that I needed to back away from.

I went into this with an open mind because it was compared to things that Ive never read or watched before. So I tried to stay positive but shortly after I started reading this I had an epiphany. It came crystal clear why I never read or watched those things. Its because I dont do the rich acting like asshats and cheating. This was full of it and

QUICK TAKE: if dessert was a book, it would be ANNA K!! So light and fun, like GOSSIP GIRL meets CRAZY RICH ASIANS. Loved all of the characters and the way Jenny contemporized a classic for a new audience. A must-read!

I feel so conflicted right now. Do you ever finish a book and you genuinely cant tell if you loved it or hated it? Thats how I feel after finishing Anna K. There was so much I loved about this book, and a few characters I absolutely adored (view spoiler), but there was also a lot of characters I couldnt stand and some subject matter that just wasnt for me.

This is an Anna Karenina retelling with a gossip girl flare. Its not a

DNF 20 pages in. The good thing is it cemented my goal of NEVER reading Anna Karenina, and created a new goal of never attempting to read any more retellings of it. All in all a productive reading experience. (free review copy)

there were a lot of ways that this book could've gone wrong, but somehow jenny lee got it right

mayhaps this is my first 5-star read of the year??? (it was kind of a false alarm with this mortal coil, though i still wholeheartedly recommend that one.)

3/14/20: i've decided to lower my rating to 4 stars. *sad music plays* which means that i still don't have a 5 star read this 2020.

the ending was kind of ruined for me. i was so sure that this one thing was going to happen, and instead i got a

CRAZY RICH ASIANS on Steroids the Northeast American Version...

SEX (the focus), DRUGS, MONEY (LOTS AND LOTS), ABSENTEE PARENTS, HORMONES, and LUST FULFILLED.

Anna K. is a story of lust relying heavily on the "Crazy Rich Asians" vibe, and a lot on other stories that focus on High School as a source of the ultimate playing field for sowing wild oats, this book pursues the theme "live in the moment". I caught a whiff of other High School based stories that have been portrayed by Hollywood. I could

This was so wonderful and I can't stop thinking about it. I didn't expect it, but these characters truly wormed their way into my heart.

This story brought all the high-class drama I wanted from an upper class Anna Karenina-inspired teen story - the opulence was breath-taking, but it was grounded in real emotions of guilt, insecurity, desire, and longing.

The relationships were all so wonderful, and were probably my favorite part of the story. I was so invested in them that I cried

Anna K. is a YA Contemporary debut that spins Anna Karenina into a modern-day retelling set in Manhattan! Following a group of elite and wealthy teens who navigate relationships and the drama that encompasses their lives! Building a realistic & diverse cast, this YA Debut delves deep into its characters while also layering deeper themes and issues!

What really made this book for me was that big cast! I'll admit in the beginning it was kind of tough to differentiate so

Thanks Netgalley for the digital copy in exchange for an honest review.

This is a modern retelling of Leo Tolstoy's amazing classic book Anna Karenina. This one is set nowadays in New York and we have a half Korean protagonist. Anna K is beautiful, rich and has a perfect boyfriend, Alexander and when she decides to visit her brother Steven, to help him get his girlfriend, Lolly, back after cheating on her, she meets Vronsky, a handsome guy, who feels immediately attracted to her and she finds

CW: sex shaming, drug use, alcohol use, cheating, adultery, revenge porn, death, and sex on the page

Man. I thought this book would be a silly, frivolous read to take my mind away from things, but it just fell flat for me. It's a poor retelling. Honestly, I'd say just pick up the actual book to read it because this didn't hit home for me.

This book is about Gen Z. The kids who are teenagers

TW: cheating, drug use, death by overdose, animal death, and tragedy (similar to the original story)

This was a very entertaining and fun read about privileged and wealthy teenagers. It had a lot of drama and angst but I didn't really care for the romance plotline between Anna and Vronsky, which are the characters that the story centers around. The story is very character-driven and I enjoyed that there were multiple POVs to read from. I also really liked all of the pop culture references!

Anna K was immediately fascinating to me. Theres something escapist about reading a story about teens who are in a completely different stratosphere in their privilege, who mess up and make bad choices and who then have to face the consequences. Its a horrifying fascination, like seeing a wreck before your eyes, but I also found it impossible to stop until I found out how everything ended. ...more

Anna K. was the it girl, the one to emulate in her social circles. From the outside, she seemed like the girl, who had it all - the perfect boyfriend, drama-free relationship, and status. She thought she had it all too, until she met Vronsky, who ignited a fire within her, the likes of which she had never before experienced. But, because the universe is all about balance, Anna K. wasn't allowed to have it all, but maybe, she didn't really want it all.

I may have mentioned this before, but when I

I won this ARC from a Goodreads giveaway. Thank you very much Goodreads and Flatiron Books for this opportunity.

I have not read the original Anna Karenina (or any of the originals of retellings), so I didn't know what to expect. Now that I have finished reading, I think I might want to read the original. This book is very dramatic, highly unrelatable, and unrealistic, but very entertaining.

I really liked how the characters matured and grew. This is probably why I liked this despite it being
