Enough for Now: Unpacking God’s Sufficiency

Rate this book

The concept of 'having enough' is one that is not often experienced. If I only had more money ... more success ... more time ... then I would be fulfilled. Yet, even when more is attained, it rarely satisfies. It is not 'enough.'

An eight-lesson women’s Bible study, this book explores the idea of “enough” through the study of Scripture—specifically the parable of the rich fool, personal stories, and practical exercises. Over the course of the lessons, women will discover how to escape the insatiable quest for more by finding their “enough” in God.

This is one of the best Bible studies I’ve ever done. Sharla does a wonderful job of addressing the topic of sufficiency in a biblical and Christ-centered way. I have long been intrigued (perhaps even wistfully tempted) by the concept of minimalism, but to look at it from a biblical perspective is refreshing. This isn’t a how-to manual on decluttering. It is far better. Sharla challenges the reader to see the root of the problem: covetousness, selfishness, and dissatisfaction with what God has given us. In short, sin. Through Bible verses and especially the account of the rich fool, Sharla points the reader to the only true source of contentment and sufficiency: God. There are eight chapters in the book, and a study guide to go along with each chapter. I absolutely love the verse mapping strategy she teaches. It’s a new and energizing way to look at Bible verses, and I will be using this technique in my future devotional time. This study is well worth the time invested.

I read this book chapter by chapter as Sharla wrote it and found it thoughtful and practical. I particularly admire Sharla's knack for writing good questions that prompt readers to think and apply what they read.
Sharla takes on the challenging topic of having “enough” in such areas of life as money, stuff, food, time, and relationships. She writes, "This book is not meant to make you feel guilty about how much you own or don’t own. Instead, it explores what God has to say on the topic of enough. It contains a set of tools to help you discover how much is enough for you. And it shines a light on a path to the God of sufficiency, who longs to satisfy our souls with Himself so that we can confidently say, 'I have enough—for now.' "
The book works well either for individual reading or in a discussion group with other women.

My Bible study group spent a few months working through this and it was pretty good - the verse mapping technique was especially interesting. But we all agreed that the constant refrain of too many shoes and sweaters being a problem got to be a bit too much. Falling back on this stereotype made the study shallower than it could have been.

Thought provoking. Very helpful for the 'enough for now' adjustment! Especially liked the study questions.

When I enjoy a Bible study, I always waffle between giving it four or five stars. From a writer/editor perspective, four stars; from a participant perspective (i.e., what I personally derived from the study), five stars.

Overall, I found this study extremely relatable and edifying. It has helped me take comfort in knowing that I don't need to be or have "enough" of anything, because God Himself is more than enough.
