My Friend Shtumpy

Rate this book
One night, Owen hears a noise in his bedroom. A noise that leads to... a monster.

But not just any monster. He's got a dragon tail and alligator-like stumps for legs. And a purple unicorn horn smack-dab in the middle of his forehead. Not to mention, he's as silly as a clown.

His name is Shtumpy. And all he wants is a friend.

When Owen hears that Shtumpy got lost from his family, Owen is determined to help him find his way back home. It'll take some creative problem-solving and special adventures to help find Shtumpy's family. But if anybody knows how important family is, it's Owen. And he'll do whatever it takes to help Shtumpy find his way.

Scratch, scratch, scratch, tap, tap, tap. Owen Baynes was hearing doming coming from under his bedroom floorboards. He was scared yet excited and hid under his blankets until the floor boards actually came up. Emerging from the floor was a green monster with a blue scaly tail and a single purple horn. OH MY!

This book is geared toward elementary children but I think it was fun to read as an adult. The character of Owen was fully described and the narrative told us about his fears and doubts. It is a touching story with a happy ending. Owen’s friend Shtumpy allows Owen to express his feelings about his dad being gone. He gives him an adventure and learns what friendship is about. Children especially boys have difficulty expressing feelings and this book gives them ideas on how to do it, like writing them down, talking to a friend, and crying. It also gives names to feelings such as happy and sad, scared and excited. I think this is an excellent book and I highly recommend it for children. Wonderfully writing and exciting subject matter will hold children’s interest. Great book.
