Rate this book
Something weird is happening on the island of Senshi. The Warrior Monkeys are worried that a dangerous enemy has come back to seek revenge. Suki and Bekko are brave enough to find out why wild dogs are on the prowl, why Mount Niru is rumbling and stinky, and who has brainwashed an army of meerkats.
This is the first title in an exciting and dramatic new series, written by martial arts expert MC Stevens and illustrated throughout by Steve Brown. Suki and Bekko are training to be Warrior Monkeys. They're a brave and resourceful duo and, with the help of their armoured bear, Kuma, are ready to face any of the harsh challenges and evil plots that threaten the safety of their island home. Using all the skills they learn in the training hall, Suki and Bekko show the kind of determination, focus, bravery, and spirit that has put them on the path to become true Warrior Monkeys!

“Warrior Monkeys and the Volcano Adventure” follows Suki and Bekko who are student warrior monkeys under the tutorship of Sensei Rika. They live on The Shanti Islands

“Jirugi was the strong monkey who had tried to take over The Shanti Islands. This was a bitter memory for the older islanders and they often used Jirugi as a warning for the young warriors.” Jirugi comes back seeking revenge for being banished with a plan to secretly blow up the volcano on the islands, Mount Niru, destroying the creatures who live there. But Suki and Bekko notice the weird goings-ons and come to the rescue.

If I was to nit-pick then I would say:
* for me the story doesn’t really get going until the second half of the book with the first half acting as an introduction to the characters and the situation
* there are a lot of characters in this book so it isn’t always easy to keep track of them especially as some of them are very similar (e.g. Suki and Bekko’s classmates). This is partly why there is a meet the characters section at the front (spanning 4 pages).
* The art could have been more detailed I felt (e.g. better detailing of backgrounds). If you are going to have lots of double page spreads of just art then make that art really good, not just adequate. Also there were a couple of bits where the art was a bit off from the text (e.g. Suki and Bekko hiding behind a bush from a bird creature in the text, but in the picture not behind a bush).

But on the good side is the story with its messages of “doing the right thing, even when you don’t want to, because it will be worth it”. For example Bekko is the more cautious monkey and Suki the more adventurous. So when things are definitely going on at the volcano, explosions and dangerous dogs, Suki wants to quickly go and see more to get to the bottom of it before reporting back whereas Bekko wants to go back and get help and there is a little conversational tug of war between them but Bekko doesn’t give up, even though he may be the more timid of the two, which is to his credit and a good message to pass on to readers too. “Being brave is when you’re scared but you do the right thing anyway” and it is a brave thing he has done. Likewise Suki doesn’t like meditation which is one of the activities the school teaches, yet when the time comes and meditation is needed to defeat Jirugi she does it.

So a good story with good messages.
