The poems in What I Know of the Mountains feel unlike any other poems I've read. This collection is singular, captivating, & generous with its range as well as its specificity. I read these poems breathlessly—due to Baban's versatile handling of a variety of inherited & innovated forms—wondering if there would be a "weak" poem in the collection. There isn't. A collection like none other before it. Baban is a master of maneuvering the lines between explanation and emotion. She’s offered the one thing I am in a constant search for: allowing a marginalized peoples their right to intimacy. I quote Jackie O when I say, “Real men lived here.” This is what Baban tells us.
