One of the Guys

Rate this book
Rylee Everett has spent her entire life as a tomboy. One of the guys to the rest of the world. With that comes constant fights with her mom when it comes to wearing dresses and makeup. To her, it’s a waste of time. Time she would rather use at the skate park and hanging out with her best friend Spencer. Well, that was her outlook until she bumps into her longtime crush at a wedding. Now she’s made it her mission to get him to notice her before he graduates and moves out of state. No matter the cost. Even if it comes with dresses. Spencer Hendricks has spent the better part of his teenage years trying to ignore the growing crush on his best friend, Rylee. He can’t go there—won’t jeopardize their friendship. Everything seems to be going according to plan until his parents drop the bombshell of a divorce and Rylee asks him to help score the attention of one of the most popular seniors at school. Now he’s faced with the possibility of moving to another state mid-year and his best friend ditching him all at the same time. With their lives seemingly headed in different directions, will they lose what they have always known, or find something neither of them expected? This is a standalone clean-ish YA book. There are no sex scenes, however, there is cursing as well as teenage bad decisions.

These two took FOREVER to become an item and I was annoyed with the whole thing. Other than that, it was cute and fluffy.

One of the Guys gave me two older-ish ('cause one is a twin) brothers who were my absolute favorite characters. It didn't matter to me that they were just side ones either - I liked them and wished they were my own family. Ryan and Will were very protective over their sister Rylee. It doesn't help that she has started to date guys but it was interesting to see them do the 'older brother talk'.

Other than meeting that family, there's Spencer her best friend. It doesn't hurt that they both sort of have feelings for one another. It does, however, suck ass that it took these two shit heads forever to realize it. Ugh, I just wanted to punch these two or at least shake them down because they were crushing on one another. With each date they went on with the wrong person, I rolled my eyes and drank some wine.

Overall, they finally got their cute little fluffy ending but I did enjoy the brother talk.

This was ok. I didn't find Rylee a very likable character. I hated the antagonistic relationship she had with her siblings and mother. I thought Spencer was sweet, though - most of the time. While this was ok, it's probably going to be the last book I read by this author.

This book was one of my most anticipated releases. I read the first book my this author and really loved it. However, this book by her is my second read and unfortunately I was let down.

Rylee and Spencer have been best friends since they were kids. I liked Rylee and Spencer as characters. Their love for skateboarding, being adventurous, and relationship was overall good. I liked their friendship. It was sweet and very nice. The beginning of their relationship was good. However, what started going down the hill was the drama.

The amount of unncessary drama in this novel was really bad. I hated how much Rylee and Spencer spent so much time hating and going back and forth. It was good for a while. There was a great amount of angst. I liked how there was a good chase. But what put this novel down two stars was the actions and decisions they did. I HATED that Rylee changed and not in the best way possible. She just lost her spunk and character. Spencer just became too emotional.

And the chemistry was okay. I liked the sparks that flew in the pages. I could feel the sexual tension between them. But, the problem was that it just fused out too quickly.

I think the main problem with the book was the rushed ending and hurry. The pacing of the book made it a very dreary read. The first half wasn't so bad. But, the 75%, everything hit the fan. There were so many unresolved issues in terms of romance, the main antagonists, and parents. A lot of the secondary characters didn't even play a role.

I don't think that this book is bad. But what I will say is that the pacing and rushed ending made it an OKAY/AVERAGE read.

Awesome story

I actually really enjoy this book. But both main characters involved are complete idiots. I can understand keep it under wraps because your best friends but if they would’ve told the truth they would’ve saved so much hurt.

Rylee is just One of the Guys. Only and youngest daughter. Three brothers. Childhood best friend Spencer. Skateboards. Dresses in baggy clothes. Until she feels like she needs to be girlier in order to get the guy she’s been lusting over for years—Jax aka popular high school jock. She begs Spencer to help her snatch him by giving her advice on what guys find attractive. The only thing is: Spencer has been secretly in love with her. Strike that, there’s another thing: his parents are going through a divorce and he might actually need to move before senior year. So, what now?⁣

Perfect for fans of The Best Laid Plans (I did not intend to rhyme), this was such a fun, quick YA romance that I happened to have stumbled upon on KU (and gave me my friends-to-lovers fix)! It’s got friendly banter, sibling love, and an easy-going flow to Rylee’s and Spencer’s story. Hence, I enjoyed it!⁣

Loved this YA romance! I thought all the characters were great. And the sibling dynamic cracked me up.

(Fairly clean with a few swears.)

Best friends

Rylee is a tomboy with a guy best friend and three pains for brothers.
Spencer is in love with his best friend so helping her get her crush is setting off every negative emotion for him, but he cannot help it, if he wasn't moving...

I really love best friends falling in love, so this made me feel great. A few tears at their stupidity and a few smiles on how they are together. Like her brothers I was rooting from the beginning.

I also enjoyed that it was a book with lots of chemistry and heart but with a high school setting still remained clean while implying how close they got.

The only thing missing was an epilogue to a few years in the future- maybe if her mom got her wish and those two did get married....

Great book full of emotions and sweet hallmark friendship.

Missed my expectations

So, the premise was good. But I'll be honest, this isn't my usual read. More cursing/ swearing than I'm comfortable with, excessive situations that are highly inappropriate and illegal, and no consequences for those poor actions. Also, needs a better editor.... so many typos, grammar errors, fudged words that were likely autocorrected wrong. I'm kinda disappointed in myself for finishing it. Honestly, my review probably isn't ask that fair for those who are not so picky about morals and grammar, but it is my opinion. It was suggested as a "clean/ sweet romance", but while there was no explicit or implied sex, it is not "clean" by my definition/expectations.

So many edit errors

I just finished an alternating first person POV that I loved but this book made me crazy. I finished the book and the overall story was decent. I thought it was a different twist on an often written YA story-line, but the edit errors were really bad. There were lots of misplaced words and the verb tense was frequently wrong.

Content: This is clean-ish. Just a lot of crude talk.
Language: Definitely has language.
Religious: No

Happy reading!!

One of the Guys

This was a good book. I really enjoyed reading it. It was a cute teen best friend romance. I saw a few mistakes in editing and a few things I would fix in the storyline. But overall it was a good teen romance novel. I would give this a 4.7

Boy, the storyline of this book was pretty simple but God, it was dragged over and over again to the point of physical pain.

There’s nothing wrong with being one of the guys, but you have to find the right guy to love you for who you are

*****Spoilers half way through****

Okay, this book was actually good. Not once did I get bored towards the end like I usually do with half of the books I’ve been reading. Though at first, I am like uhhhhh I don’t think I want to read this book, because of how it started off but once I got into it, it turned out pretty good.

I had to laugh at the fact that Rylee got mad when Spencer ended up talking to Zoe just to make her jealous... I said to myself she deserved to be mad because for one she didn’t care about Spencer feelings when it came to Jax... & everybody knew Jax didn’t want her for one I felt he only liked her for s*x ... & when she realized her feelings for Spencer she got more jealous when Zoe was around ...I said she was feeling like Spencer was feeling and he was showing her the right thing...

Not only that I understood why Spencer got upset and said what he said... for one he felt like she wanted Jax and not him & had the nerve to kiss Jax after hours of kissing him. But that didn’t give Rylee the right to go to some random party by herself and get drunk & almost getting raped by some sleaze-bag ... which I am glad didn’t happen because I wouldn’t clearly upset even though what she did was very stupid... & her twin Ryan found her just in time & I doubt them people would’ve helped her too. But at least in the end she finally told Spencer she LOVED HIM. But can’t get over the fact that Spencer kissed her ... the next day because she drank so much and vomited and never brush her teeth the next day 🤣🤣 like ehhhh it’s too much for me when someone throws up and try to kiss you, or you were kissing them...

This book was so cute!! Personally I really enjoyed reading from both characters’ points of views. Rylee was really relatable as a tomboy with brothers and Spencer was honestly the best. Her brothers were funny as well.

If I had to sum up the characters in one phrase it would be that they are soooo seventeen years old, but in a good way (bc they’re seventeen obviously). They act their age (not like characters in teen dramas which was refreshing) and have just the right amount of idiocy to where they’re delusional and think that their ideas are amazing and then quickly learn that they are not. They make stupid mistakes that only teenagers can make and that’s what makes them even more real to me.

The character arc of Rylee was really fun to read as she kind of found herself along the way. Spencer’s internal struggle to support his best friend while trying to deny his feelings for her on top of his situation with his parents helped flesh out the story and caused a lot of the miscommunication that led to a lot of the conflicts in the plot.

All in all if you like cute stories about best friends falling in love with realistic characters and a lot of teasing I highly recommend this book!!

I was let down by the book, a bit. I for some reason, could not really see the protagonist, as one of the guys. Like apart from what was stated, she for most part seemed like the girl next door.

I do like best-friend to lovers novels. How they understand each other, quirks to something more, or maybe they always were and didn't realise. There were some good bits. I like the characters' names, i like the backdrop in which the plot was taking place..but it was just a bit scatterd for me. I didnt really sink into the story.

I flinch for writing anything but good reviews for a book. But this is how I feel, this time. These are my personal feelings, and in no regards indicative of how good the author's work is. You might enjoy it more than I did. So give it shot, if the synopsis intrigues you. Because as I said, there were good bits:)

This book had good potential but it was a serious letdown for two really big reasons; language and sex references.

There was SO MUCH language in this book. And the really sad part was that it was so unnecessary. It added nothing to the book, in fact, it distracted from the book by cussing for no reason. If you are sensitive to this type of this please do not read this book!!! I wish someone had let me know.

Second thing, so. many. sex references. It made sleeping with somebody (nothing but sleeping, but seriously?) or making out or groping or actually having sex (they didn't but they referenced it) seem like no big deal. It is. And it's not okay. It made me very uncomfortable and I can honestly say I regret this read.

There were some cute moments, but not nearly enough and all the downfalls WAY overpowered what few high points there were.

I really enjoyed this book. Best friends are in their junior year of high school, but something had changed. Rylee, tomboy of the year, finally wants to be noticed by a boy. But the boy she wants isn't the same boy who's craving attention from her. I wing give anymore details, no spoilers here. If you want to know, got to read it yourself. The writing is fascinating, the characters are well written, as a whole, the story is great. You don't want to miss it. Voluntary review of an advanced reader's copy via booksprout

Yes, just another cute best friends to lovers story... But what is the most important part of these stories? Friendship. And Friendship between Rylee and Spencer is spot on.. Although he is withholding a lot from her
But they are still able to spend time together at park skateboarding or watching movies together and feel comfortable... the best kind of comfortable...

I don’t normally go for the high-school age characters, but this one was surprisingly good! I finished it in one day. Rylee is incredibly dense and it drove me nuts, but I guess I knew girls that clueless in high school so it’s probably realistic for some.

Very low spice, although it’s not clear if they are hooking up off-page or not. There is a good bit of language. Also, realistic teenage bad decisions like drinking and partying. The suggestion of attempted sexual assault as a result of those decisions, but it is prevented.

Completely and utterly adorable. Why are humans so damned obtuse when it comes to emotion? (Present self not excluded.) Then again, if the world started communicating better, romances would be like 3 pages long. Still, I loved Rylee and Spencer and I always love a good best friend to lover trope.

I really enjoyed this best-friends to love romance. It was sweet and real, and many times you don't know what you have right under your nose. The overall flow of the book was done well, but the ending felt a bit rushed.

I have a love-hate relationship with this book! Best friend romance!

OMG! Why? I hate Rylee and Spencer, they are the most infuriating book characters. I love Rylee and Spencer, they have an amazing love story. I wanted to throw my phone across the room a few time, but the author made up for it at the end. I hope Rylee and Spencer get married and have kids.

Bring on the feels! My heart broke for Spencer every time Jax was mentioned, particularly because he was quite clearly such an epic douchecanoe. This was a fun, fast read about best friends that realize they could be more and the hurdles they set up for themselves before they reach the finish line.
