After Darkness Falls #3

Wickedly They Dance

Rate this book
The world has learned to fear vampires and forgotten a greater threat.
Before the bloodsuckers rose, the gods had perfected one race of predators.
And they’ve chosen their prey.

Avani was raised in another pack, another world, away from the secluded werewolves of Oldcrest. But the shadow that has followed her every step since her first shift has forced her into exile.
Oldcrest is the only place in the world where she’s safe. She won’t let anyone take it away from her. Not even her own kind.

As threats surround the territory, everyone demands Alexius’s allegiance. In his hundreds of years, he’s lived without bending the knee, and it won’t start now.
But when a wounded, hunted wolf crashes into his life, the healer in him can’t help lending a hand, although he knows touching a female of the royal pack marks him for life.
As an enemy.
Or as an alpha.

Re-read 14th - 15th October 2021

3.5*

I enjoyed this one and I’m glad I continued on. After the disappointing Blood of a Huntsman it was touch and go but worth it in the end.

I really liked Avani and even Alexius grew on me.

I was surprised that this is set 1000 years in the future. It didn’t feel like it.
But it was a good entertaining read and I’m moving straight onto the next one

I am loving this series, found this one better than the second. The relationship unfolding didn’t seem as rushed and the ongoing threat still holds focus, already bought the next one to read.

This is a much better book than the previous one of this series - the one about Cat and Bash.
This book is about Avani the werewolf and Alexius the playboy-type vamp from Nighthill.

Avani escapes her brutal pack and comes to Nighthill for help.
She ends up finding an unlikely mate in Alexius, a 1000yr old vampire under a curse.
The story ends with a battle with the 'queen' - the mysterious villain of the series.

There are many things to like in this book - the story is somewhat fast paced, the heroine is spunky and the hero is also likeable. We have characters from previous series like Levi, Chloe, Greer, Eirkr etc. Knox the First Wolf also makes an appearance.

However as with some of May's books there are also some disappointments.
The blurb about the book made it look like Avani is either part of or enemy of a race of special supernaturals who have become a threat to the world again.
The actual story is a bit disappointing as the only threat is from the Elder pack in Oldcrest and they only threaten the vampires.

The 'hunt' mentioned in the blurb is a blood moon hunt, supposed to be super crazy and violent but somehow ended with a crazy pack of 70 wolves rounding up a camp of 100s of humans who managed to mostly escape leaving 3 out of whom 2 died.
Werewolves are either super lazy or incompetent or their tales of violence is exaggerated.

It is then revealed that they did this hunt to ally with Queen, murder Chloe and Greer and turn against Knox. Okay.
An intelligent villain would be more cautious, sneaky and cunning you would think - rather than going public with defiance and showing their cards so early in the game.
Its also not clear how and why they allied with the 'queen' and why they did what they did.
Its also not clear how this whole alliance and the challenge missed Knox - why didnt Avani or Alexius talk to Knox if they felt that the pack was planning something bad during the challenge?

Eirkr's history has been revealed bit by bit and honestly I am not really liking the development of his character. He is slowly being turned into a mushy sweet nice guy who was totally misunderstood. Why? Why destroy such an intense ruthless character?

Another character who is turning to be irrelevant is Levi.
From the first book where he was depicted as an all powerful alpha vampire lord, he has been reduced in subsequent books to be a loverboy kinda person who doesnt quite contribute to the plot much and rather be a sidekick to his mate.

I am beginning to think that I should stop reading May's books at part 1. Cos part 2 and part 3 just destroys the characters altogether. She seems to kind of lose the plot somewhere somehow, and turns the whole thing into a mushy romance instead of a fantasy.

The books in this series have gotten better and better, and I am now anxiously awaiting the release of Blood and Hexes.

Avani and Alexius were great characters, both of whom I liked instantly. After Alexius saved Avani, they spent time together getting to know and trust one another. Alexius was cursed to remain on the grounds of Oldcrest, and never believed he’d have a shot at loving anyone. Avani had a bad childhood and never felt like she belonged in the pact where she lived. When they finally acknowledged their feelings, they were even stronger and more powerful together.

I’m enjoying that there is more action and fighting scenes in each book. There will obviously be another major scene to deal with a certain character, and I’m wondering how and when that will take place. The next book will introduce Alexius’ absent sister Diana and I can’t wait to see how she and Mikar get along. I’m also hoping that maybe Blair and Seth will get a book, and Greer too if possible. However sadly I’ve looked on the author’s website in search of more information, and she doesn’t even have this series listed. Hopefully that will change.

May Sage obviously knows what she is doing because this book has just sucked me further into this marvelous fantasy world that she has built and —so very kindly— shared with us.

This book features hot-vamp-professor Alexius and sweet-and-sassy-werewolf Avani as they try to navigate their relationship in the midst of all the issues and conspiracies introduced in Book 1 and 2. I’ve only ever seen Alexius as the arrogant and cold (but sexy!) vamp elder in the previous books, and it has been a blast getting to know his sweet and vulnerable side. Avani has always been in the back of mind ever since her short appearance in Book 1, and I’ve always wondered if she would ever play a bigger part in the series. She definitely defies many of her other werewolf counterparts with her independence and courage to do the right thing instead of following “pack norms”.

May has done an amazing job pairing these two lovely creatures together. I absolutely love her way of sprinkling tidbits of future couples in every book because it definitely keeps my fire going. (Ahem...Is anyone else wondering about Eirikr and Greer?)

The story just keeps getting better and better, and the overall plot thickens in every book. I know that the next one comes out (approximately) at Spring 2020 as posted on her Facebook page and I cannot wait to get my hands on it. I am hoping to get Eirikr and Greer, or Seth and Blair. 😊

Just as last time a mixed bag for me. The side characters are great and maybe the big cast doesn't help sometimes? I thought the focus was well placed on a small group though. I did enjoy several of the scenes and seeing more of Ruby and Fin Varra. I enjoyed Avani and some of Alexius' plot. The battle scene was great.
I did not like the pacing for the book's character arcs as it felt hurried in places, am not convinced by the development of the overarching plot in this one and feel threads were left hanging in places they didn't need to be or cut off in ways that seemed a bit like 'sorry, time's up, let's just shorten this shall we?'.

I still want to see where this all leads and I will likely pick the next one up if it is on KU because I do want to see how the big plot comes together. I also love the characters by themselves, such as Greer and Eirikr as well as Blair etc. So, here is hoping.

Wickedly They Dance is the third novel in the After Darkness Falls series by May Sage and features vampire Alexius and werewolf Avani in an engaging and addictive story that is quite possibly my favourite instalment in the series yet.

Alexius Helsing has lived for thousands of years and during his time cursed to Oldcrest he has cultivated a decent life for himself as a Professor at the Institute of Paranormal Studies, a healer and a surveyor of science hoping to one day make up for his misdeeds. He enjoys his time with a plethora of young women and isn’t against helping his friends, albeit reluctantly. Avani Parker’s life has never been easy; after becoming a werewolf as a teen she lost her mother and attempted to forge a place within the pack of wolves that live within Oldcrest. One of the few female wolves in the pack, Avani wants to be valued for more than just her body and ability to produce pups, but when the pack does something horrendous she can’t condone, Avani finds herself running from the only home she’s known for more than a decade. Alexius certainly never expects to be caught up with the feisty Avani but when the hurt and hunted wolf ends up on his doorsteps, will he find himself truly falling for a woman for the first time ever? And will Avani finally find the home she’s always wanted?

The After Darkness Falls series is a very easy one to read. Featuring a solid cast of characters including vampires, werewolves and witches, I’m enjoying each instalment that features a different main couple and romance. There’s still the occasional lack of depth to the story and characters, and I feel the endings are too swift sometimes, but I do overall find myself liking this series with Wickedly They Dance being no exception.

Wickedly The Dance features Alexius and Avani, two characters we have previously met. Alexius has always been someone I was super excited to read about ever since we first met him in the first novel featuring Chloe and I have to say his story is by far my favourite so far. Both Alexius and Avani were great characters and I really enjoyed their romance. I felt they were both likable as individuals--Lex a cheeky vampire and Avani a werewolf who was full of life---and I thought their romance developed really well. They got to know one another over time and built on that.

As this third novel comes to an end, I can see how May Sage has set up the next book to feature Alexius’s sister Diana and vampire Mikar. I’m hoping Seth, Blair and Gwen’s books are also coming soon as they are the three I’m most excited for. Hope we’ll see them soon!

Someone said this was the best book in the series so far. I don't know that it is. It was the most believable though in terms of the romance.

I saw a build-up. I even understood where they ended. After all, you have to give paranormals more rope than mortals. They are just wired differently.

I love Avani and I expected more debauchery from Alexius.

The wolf was perfect. She had the right level of mistrust and confidence. She was comfortable in her skin. As expected if you were naked every time you changed.

I have never been a fan of novels about wolves. Of any kind. It's just not my cup of tea. It was why I was so apprehensive starting this one. So I was glad that we got just enough to understand the dynamics in Wolvswood. The focus remained on Avani and Alexius' budding relationship.

I never thought to wonder why Alexius never left the school or the hill. I just assumed he did. Getting his history was a nice addition to this group of misfits banded by loyalty and some love. I still wish for a novel that makes me connect with Levi and Chloe. I still can't feel it.

The beautiful thing about this series if you have made it this far, is that you know that you won't get only one POV. I live for those moments spent getting to know the other characters/couples. Past and present.

Also, The Queen is revealed.

I can't say I am bored yet and I can't wait to dive into the next stage of this war.

The push and pull are perfect and each book adds a little piece more while pushing this story along.

>Book Review – Wickedly They Dance
>I am an independent reviewer. This book is the 3rd in the After Darkness series and ends in an HEA for the couple, but the plot continues. The whole series mentions the wolf shifters, but the reader never really gets to meet any. This book introduces Avani, a wolf shifter and loner. She was turned after an attack and never really formed a pack anywhere. The pack she ends up with treats women as objects. She never feels safe. Alexius is one of the original vampires, cursed to stay on campus forever. When Avani tries to help a vampire on campus, she catches the attention of Alexius. The insta-attraction is annoying, but these stories don’t really develop the relationships all that well.
>There is a lot of action and Levi and Chloe are involved once again. This plot takes place mostly out of school, so the story feels different. The first books had the houses on the hill as being off-limits. This book seems to have everyone hanging around on the hill. This book is appropriate for an adult audience. I love the protectiveness of Alexius toward Avani. I am giving this book 4 stars.

Still loving this series

This series keeps me turning pages. I hope it doesn't slow down. Some authors will stuff what I call "filler" into books in order to prolong the story. Thank goodness this author hasn't done that. The story goes along at a fast pace which I like.

The characters are interesting and there's more to them than the first impression like with Alexius who I thought was just a smug jerk. He turned out to be so much more.

I learned something new in this book that I didn't realize before. I had thought that the timeline in the book was just an alternative timeline to our present times but I learned that it's two hundred years in the future. It didn't make sense to me because technology seems to be the same as it is today. It bugged me.

I'm getting ready to read the next book. I think it may be the last one released so far.

Brilliant continuation of the series, I want more.

Lex and Avani's story was fast paced, yes but full of humour, laughter, romantic and not without its scare and drama. I think this story might be her best so far. Got to love a sup who can cook like a master chef, seriously kick arse, be vainly charming and find time to fall in love. He has no better match than a beautiful heroine with such self assuredness and strength to match his. M Sage has again created a brilliant balance between the main characters as well as side characters stories. Making her stories so much more, and very entertaining. Definite thumbs up on this one!

So good!

This series is really well done! (Not surprising seeing as it’s May Sage). I love how the individual stories are also threaded through with just a snippet of Chloe’s point of view in each. That being said, I wish the first book blurb had specified that while they are considered “standalone books” it is *within an overarching/continuing storyline* because even though each couple’s story is technically complete, I’m on tenterhooks wanting to know how the whole story plays out and I would probably have waited until the entire series was published so I could binge it haha. I seriously don’t know how I’m supposed to wait until June for the next one!! Lol!

Good story and characterization but needs more

I like the story and characters so this must be a great book and not just an entertaining read right?
Every book in this series was the same but I walk away a little unsatisfied.
The actual development of the relationships needs more, more time and more development.
I hate drawn out angst or too drawn out romantic development but this is the opposite end of the scale which is a shame because these stories could be truly great.
I will continue to read May's books in small doses or I fear I will become too unsatisfied to consider reading more. I look forward to her nailing the balance.

Okay so I gotta be honest and say that I was a bit confused reading this book, but that's my fault. I didnt know the back stories to the other characters when they were mention so the end battle at the end of the book made little sense to me because I didnt really know who the Queen was in reference to Chloe.
I skipped the first two books and went straight into this one. This was kind of a slow burn to me even though they were instantly attracted to each other. Looking back I think them becoming friends first and then lovers made the story interesting. This was also a quick read and super easy.
I didnt hate this book, and I might read the first two but Im not sure yet.

Good series

I do not usually like books in a series because they don’t have a ending that satisfies me. I typically like books that may be long but finalize with an ending. I do enjoy this series though, as I recognize the characters and half of each book isn’t a replay of prior books, I do space out time before I read a new one, because I feel like I am “binge reading” and I enjoy taking my time, becoming part of the book. This series offers that and each book has been great. I hope you enjoy them as well.

Just like the before stories in the series, I loved this book. Finished it the day I got it. If you have not read the series, do not worry, these books are essentially stand alone. If you are able to get your hands on the series, I highly recommend reading from the first book as it helps create the setting and mood of the book. Also, you get to know a little more about other characters in the series if you read the first two books. Similar to the other books, I recommend this book to young adults as there are a few sexual scenes.

I enjoyed it

The book before this one was good but this one was better. I really enjoy how the characters interact with each other. They feel real. I think I liked this one better was because I really liked our latest heroine. I also enjoyed the main couple not hating each other at first like in some books. It felt more like how most real world relationships start as strangers who learn to respect each other.

New convert

Started reading these books for free and didn't think I'd buy at first. Then I read the first book and became invested in the characters and world. ( outstanding world and character building by the way)
Just bought the entire series and am anxiously awaiting the next book. Thank you, May Sage, and PLEASE continue the series. I am absolutely invested in your world and characters.

Loving this series!

I love this author’s stories! May Sage is fabulous at developing characters, worlds, & storylines. The After Darkness Falls series just gets better with each book. Each book is devoted to one couple, but the characters are woven into the ensuing stories so very well. I’m truly enjoying the continuation and expansion of the storyline. Hoping for several more books in this series.

Wickedly they Dance

Alexius finally get his story as part of the ongoing saga for this series. The story is filled with fun, adventure an unexpected happenings that keep it moving forward. I can not wait ti see some of the other characters stories, I am sure they will be epic.

Avani and Alexius have their work cut out for them in this story but the entire institute rise to the occasion.

Avani & Alexius

If your this far into this series then you know how much fun this is. As we get deeper into the series, we get more characters, more plot and more secrets. I am enjoying this so much. Avani and Alexius are good together, this was their story along with advancing the overall story. I'm happy there's more books, all these people feel like friends and family and I find myself wishing this world was real.

Best of the series

I really do think this was the best of the series (so far!). I think it’s because we get a male character who is fully fleshed out. May Sage’s heroines are always awesome, and Avani is just as badassed as the rest, but this time I enjoyed reading about Lex as much as Avani. As always, can’t wait for the next one!

Fast paced and action packed

InLVED Helsing’s story! Avani and Lex were so interesting to read about, learn their stories, and fall in love with. Lex wasn’t as awful as I assumed, and the crazy wolf was so much more awesome than I expected. Oh, and the female foe was not who I expected!

Amaze balls!

Definitely recommend for YA! Super steamy and I love that it’s not constantly sex sex sex, but it gradually leads up to it. I love that ALL of the characters have their own story that’s needs to be told. This book had me wishing Alexius Helsing would take a bite out of me.

This is the third book of the series and I recommend reading the first two before going into this one. Although each book features a different couple, reading the other books first will give a better understanding of the bigger conflict. Also, it made me invest more one the characters and look forward for the next books.

Looking forward for the next book in the series!

Slow burn, fantastic adventure!

Alexius and Avani make such a pair! He's a centuries old Elder vampire who slowly allows himself to fall for the lovely lone wolf new to The Hill. Avani is awesome. She is tough and smart, sure of herself, yet modest and kind. I honestly liked everything about this story!

Wonderful Story

This book is the third in the series about vampires and shifters and the troubles they have protecting their home and loved ones. This story concentrates around Alexius and his struggle to find a mate. It is well written and there is plenty of action. This book is an easy read.

Awesome, awesome, awesome!

I have fallen in love with the "After Darkness..." series. Witches, Vampires, Wolf Shifters, oh my! Just as you get to know a character, along comes the next book plunging you deeper into the lives on "the hill". Really hating to have to wait until April for the next book.
