"Her view of a crucial period of transition is truly a marvel to behold."
Publishers Weekly

The daughter of a missionary doctor, Claire Malcolm Lintilhac (1899-1984) was born in China, became a nurse there, and lived and worked through China's whole momentous first half of the 20th century. Opening a unique window into the making of the world's newest yet oldest superpower, CHINA IN ANOTHER TIME — with over 160 photos and drawings — is Claire's own story, compiled by Doug Wilhelm from the writings and recorded storytelling she left behind.

Born in China's interior as the daughter of a Canadian medical missionary, Claire became a freelance traveling nurse in the country. She witnessed firsthand the years of civil war that followed China's short-lived Nationalist Revolution of 1911. In the 1930s — as Claire cared for patients both Western and Chinese, fell in love and started a family — she survived Japan's two horrific attacks on Shanghai, and her British husband Lin was interned by the Japanese in a Shanghai camp during World War II.

In 1949, Claire watched as China's greatest city fell to the Communist Party, and in 1950 she, Lin and their son Philip slipped quietly out of the country they loved.

CHINA IN ANOTHER TIME is Claire's vividly personal account of China's struggle to become its own modern nation, from the last imperial dynasty to the advent of Communist rule. The book includes short, clear historical sidebar articles by Doug Wilhelm, and an introduction by eminent China scholar Nicholas Clifford, late professor emeritus at Middlebury College.

I always say the book that made me fall in love with historical fiction was The Good Earth by Pearl S. Buck. I read it in the seventh grade, and I’ll never forget the experience of traveling to China in a different time than the present.

Much like The Good Earth, China in Another Time transported me, except this time, I was reading a memoir of the late Claire Malcolm Lintilhac. It was easy to read, thoughtful, descriptive, enlightening, and reads as intriguingly as fiction. Lintilhac described the changes in government during her lifetime and how they shaped the landscape of China.

Overall, this thin memoir is rich in thoughtfulness. I immensely enjoyed my time with it.

I received a gifted copy. All opinions are my own.

This is a beautiful and touching story about a Claire, the daughter of a Canadian physician and missionary, who spoke fluent Chinese and worked as a traveling nurse. I loved all of the pictures included in the book, all 160 of them and some hand drawn too by Claire, which added to the anecdotal stories. Claire spoke about surviving the Boxer Rebellion and the civil war in the early 1900’s. Claire takes us through the horrific time in the 1930’s when the Japanese attacked Shanghai which imprisoned her British husband, through the 40’s when China fell into Communism.

Reading this book felt like A friend telling me a story of their life. I loved every one of them, and these stories can only be told through first hand account and experience. It was quite the fascinating read that I adored!

This was quite an experience to read and I highly recommend this book for an eye opening look at an amazing account of her life while in China at another time! This would also make a great gift to anyone who enjoys history, someone in the medical field, someone who enjoys a great nonfiction reads and amazing memoirs.

Claire Malcolm Lintilhac, author of "China In Another Time A Personal Story" has written a memorable, poignant, historical, and thought-provoking memoir. Claire's father was a Canadian physician and seemed to be a big influence on Claire's life. Claire decided to be a nurse and often would travel in China to see patients. Claire was born in 1899 and basically lived through much of the history in China. Claire spoke both English and Chinese.

In this book are many pictures, that Claire had taken over time, which helps document what Claire is telling us. Claire was well aware that the water had to be boiled, and any instruments had to be sterilized. There was a big difference between North China and Southern China. In one area, the people ate rice and the other noodles.

Claire's father had a radio and was able to get some news and later transmit news, which turned out to be advantageous. I find it absolutely astonishing that Claire lived through the Boxer Rebellion, other wars, and was able to recount when Japan attached China. It is also quite remarkable that Claire continued to work and help the people, during dangerous times. She was courageous, brave and committed to her goals.

Claire did marry an English businessman, and they had a son. At one point, Claire had gotten sick. When the Communists walked into China in 1949, Claire and her family were lucky to find a way to leave China.  I would highly recommend this amazing memoir for readers who enjoy History.

This is a fascinating book from which I learned a bit of what it was like to live in China during the first half of the 20th century. China in Another Time: A Personal Story is the memoir of Claire Malcolm Lintilhac. She was the daughter of Canadian missionaries doing service in China. Claire was born in North China where she lived and served as a nurse for most of her life.

The book is laid out beautifully with photographs taken by Claire on each page. Some of the pictures are marked with audio icons that correlate with Claire’s own voice on the book’s website. This made the book come alive even more for me.

I found the description of women’s foot binding, long nails, and plucked bangs intriguing. We see how women were repressed by men. Not a new concept at all. Same old thing, but different in China during the 1900’s. Claire shares descriptions of living behind walls, rickshaws, water purification, routines of their homes, nursing, delivering babies, and the communist takeover.

Favorite quote: “When you bind the feet of a nation’s women for so many centuries, you bind more than their feet. And when you release those feet, you release more than just feet.” Perfect quote for National Women’s Month, right?

Claire was an example of a selfless woman who lived to serve others. She was a valuable asset and friend to the people she helped during her life. I am deeply touched by her story.

NUGGET GAINED: “The ultimate principle of life is love.”

I'm a big history buff so this book caught my interest. China in Another Time chronicles the life of Claire Malcolm Lintilhac, who grew up in rural China. She became a traveling nurse. She was the only private duty nurse on the China coast for fourteen years. These are her stories and some of the customs of Chinese culture such as, the tradition of binding a womans feet. A girl was permitted to roam free until the age of five. Then her feet would be bound. A painful and disfiguring procedure. There are over 160 photos in this book. This is more than just a memoir. It's pieces of history and things I never knew about. I learned a great deal reading this. This was a remarkable read about a courageous and remarkable woman. To Claire, I raise my glass.🍷

Claire Malcolm Lintilhac was born in 1899 in China, the daughter of a missionary doctor and his wife from Canada. More than a memoir, this captivating narrative is the story of China, from the last of its dynasties to the rise of communism in the 1940's. From Claire's early childhood to becoming the only traveling nurse in North China through her marriage, giving birth to her son at the age of 40, and her eventual move to Vermont. Told from her recollections of her journals, over 15 hours of recordings (which are fascinating and can be found at chinainanothertime.com) and more than 160 photographs, it's as if she's there with you telling her story. I really enjoyed this little gem and highly recommend it to those of you who like a good historical memoir and maybe some interest in China.

CHINA IN ANOTHER TIME
A Personal Story
By Claire Malcom Lintilhac

This is a a memoir of a young Canadian Missionary growing up and during changing times living in China and her families life, the customs, the ways of the world at each stage of time, becoming a nurse and how her choice of career saved so many lives and also made a big impact on modernizing nursing and helping develop methods to help both the young and old survive when normally they would have died. She shares her pictures, drawings and sketches and you learn such valuable and interesting insight on things you may never have known.

Claire was born in 1899 in a village in North China during the last days of the Qing Dynasty. The daughter of Canadian Missionaries. Wife of a British business executive in Shanghai. She had a sister named Dorothy.

Claire freelanced as a traveling nurse in homes or in local hospitals. Her favorite work was maternity care, she made herself available to local Chinese women wherever she lived. She was the only foreign private-duty nurse between Shanghai in Central China and Beijing in the North. She was called a “tramp nurse”. She was a nurse for 17 years before marrying in July 1936.

She never went to college and only had brief training as a nurse. She kept family documents, diaries, correspondence, to create a personal chronicle of the family. She then sat down with a reel to reel tape recorder in order to recount a chronological oral history. She then assembled these stories into written drafts that also included her own drawings to begin this book. There is not a word of fiction, just an authentic view of China in the early 20th Century. She loved this period in time but it has been lost and basically edited out of history.

On March 12, 1940 Claire and Lin were shocked when she gave birth to baby Philip which surprised them both since she was scheduled to have a cesarean.

She left Shanghai in 1950. Up until then, China was home to her husband Francis Eugene (Lin) Lintilhac and her. Both of their families were born there.

The family was living in Putney Heath, London when Lin went in for surgery for mere arthritis; unfortunately due to complications he passed on October 16, 1957.

Claire and Phil made their home in Vermont in 1958 after the death of her husband Lin.

That is just the timeline but you get to hear all her stories of the gentle & kindly Chinese people, the way things were before modernization came along. About the peasants, the help, the wars, the fight for change and so much more as told from a remarkable woman that made her own impact on history.

I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.

Reviewing books has taught me one thing: it's okay to branch out of your normal comfort zone. I am not big on reading/reviewing memoirs, because most of the  time, I don't connect with the authors. I want something I can lost in, feel like I'm making new friends, and falling in love with the story. But, every once in awhile (a little more often lately than I'm used to!) I come across a memoir and get completely lost within it's pages.

China In Another Time is one such memoir. I've heard so much about China and how it used to be, how it still is, and how it could be. I've never traveled there but I've heard the stories. I've seen pictures. But, Claire Malcolm Lintilhac photos brought all those stories to life for me. I felt like I was traveling first hand through China and seeing it through her eyes. I felt myself becoming Claire as she told of her time there, as her life as a nurse, and just felt like it was just the read I needed to freshen my mind.

If you are new to memoirs, this would be a lovely one to start with. If you aren't new to them and want to add to your collection, then this is a wonderful addition. Claire Malcolm Lintilhac's life comes to life for the reader, vividly portrayed through moving words and eye catching photos. I highly recommend this one and am, once again, happy that I took a chance on a memoir.

It is not secret how much I love Asia and to be able to read a personal story on China, I could not pass up the opportunity..
Philip Lintilhac is the son of Claire and he found the unpublished version of this book, which is why we get to immerse ourselves in this amazing memoir..Claire Malcolm Lintilhac was born in China, her father was a Canadian missionary doctor. Claire became a traveling nurse in China and she married a British business man. Throughout this memoir Claire takes on the journey of what she lived through in China during very difficult times and how she and her family had escaped in 1949 when the Communists arrived. Claire worked and lived during some very dangerous times in China and she documented them with photographs and personal drawings. This book is a must read for lovers of history, China and memoirs.

China in Another Time is a beautifully written memoir of the late Claire Malcolm Lintilhac. A traveling nurse who was fluent in Chinese, Claire was the daughter of a Canadian physician and missionary. I have always had a love for history and Claire's memoir was like a window into the past, showing me what it was like living in China during the first half of the 20th century. Filled with a lot of historical events and details, there were periods of sadness but an overwhelming sense of happiness throughout the pages of Claire's life. I am truly honored to have read this beautiful memoir and the amazing photographs help to bring Claire's stories to life! I was given a copy of this memoir and all words and opinions are my own!

What an interesting story, and even more so because it's true. This enchanting book offered me an intimate view of the life experiences of Claire Malcolm Lintilhac, the daughter of a Canadian physician and missionary who spent many years in China. Claire's dedication to nursing and desire to be of service are evident throughout the book. Her observations of the day-to-day lives of the Chinese people and her recounting of the terrors of the wars of the period both educated and inspired me. The photographs brought her words to life, the maps explained the geography involved her story, and the brief, historical inserts provided context that helped me understand the experiences of Claire and her family within larger, world events.

This is a truly remarkable book. It’s a personal story of a young girl who was born and raised in China, the daughter of a missionary doctor, she became a nurse and lived in China for the first half of the 20th century. Although she was born in China, her heritage is English and Canadian and she offers a unique perspective on Chinese society. This book includes some of her own photos, which are fascinating. She talks about practices like foot binding and her experiences working as a nurse in rural areas of China. This is a very unique book and gives the reader an idea of how far China has come in the last 100 years.

This is an interesting memoir of Claire Malcolm Lintilhac, born in China in 1899, who lived through many changes from Imperialism, to the two World Wars, to the rise of Communism.
Her perspective is from experience rather than politics. Insights into the mindset of the common people and the difficulty of existence due to poverty and overpopulation.
I learned things I had heard of but not the details. The practice of foot binding for instance.
There is also a website where you can hear some of her stories in her own words. Claire was a remarkable woman in so many ways. I thoroughly enjoyed all that she shared in this book.

Claire's personal tale of life in rural China brings the reader inside from an outsider's perspective. Although born and raised in China, Claire's heritage is English and Canadian, giving her the unique perspective of both "belonging" in China and being seen as a foreigner. As a nurse, Claire experiences rural Chinese life alongside varying levels of poverty and affluence, all the while bringing a fresh and positive nature to those she encounters. Her experiences are quite unique, as far as any other account I've read of China in the late 1800s-mid 1900s.
A thoroughly enjoyable adventure.

China In Another Time by Claire Lintilhac is a great historical recount of China and her time there. I loved the pictures and descriptions throughout the book. They helped enhance the personal account from the writer. Claire's writing was well-done. I was intrigued about her experience and journey of China. What is everyone reading to keep up their spirits while in quarantine?

I am glad I picked up China in Another Time: A Personal Story by Claire Malcolm Lintilhac. Claire Malcolm is a daughter of Canadian missionary doctor stationed in China. Claire lived and worked in China as a travelling nurse in the first half of the 20th century.

Claire's story is inspirational and thought provoking. She talks about all the changes China went thru after the fall of the Qing dynasty. For someone who is a history buff this book is a time capsule. We learn a lot about Chinese customs and traditions, ways of life etc. The book has about 160 photographs and drawings from Claire's personal collection. It gave the book a personal touch.

I highly recommend this book to history and memoir fans. A great deal of information and an inspiring story!
