Welcome to Clean Slate home of tight jeans, cowboy boots and rough trails. For some men, it’s a fantasy come true.

Shawn Matthews never imagined he’d be living out of his car, trying to make ends meet, but life doesn’t always go your way—he knows that better than most. When an accident leaves the Clean Slate Ranch shorthanded, Shawn is enlisted to help cook and finds himself bunked next to the sexiest cowboy he’s ever laid eyes on.

The first time Robin Butler spots the new chef, he thinks he’s seeing an actual ghost. Shawn is the spitting image of his late husband, and it spooks the hell out of him. The former rodeo-star-turned-ranch-hand does his best to avoid the soft-spoken cook—except it’s kind of tough when the man makes the best damn grub this side of the Mississippi and has a boy-next-door charm that’s impossible to resist.

Even though the tension between them practically sizzles, Shawn doesn’t do hookups and Robin isn’t ready for a new relationship. Besides, Robin can tell Shawn’s been hurt and deserves a partner who isn’t saddled with a tragic past. But chemistry doesn’t lie. Maybe finding each other—and a second chance at love—is the lucky break they both need.

One-click with confidence. This title is part of the Carina Press Romance all the romance you’re looking for with an HEA/HFN. It’s a promise!

No stranger to the writing world, A.M. Arthur has been creating stories in her head since she was a child and scribbling them down nearly as long. I really like the setting of AM Arthur's Clean Slate Ranch series, the found families and friendships between the men and women involved are joyous to behold.

The series has been mostly a hit for me and this fourth book is no exception to the rule. However, I also found both of the characters frustrating at times and I simply couldn't understand why Robin had such a sticking point over telling people how his husband had died.

I mean, I totally got the trauma of his husband's death, the guilt over thinking it was his fault, but when a similar situation arises with the person you're trying to build a new relationship with, not talking about it just felt utterly alien to me.

Anyways, that aside, both men had issues with communication which skirted on becoming too much for me to enjoy the read but AM kept things tightly controlled without too much internal monologuing or introspection which mean this was a really good slow burn romance in the end.

I liked how they took their time to get to know each other, there's an eight-year age gap which, while small, was actually pretty huge in terms of life experience. Shawn's past (which he also refused to talk about!) played a big part in the time Robin took to move things beyond just kissing and heavy petting.

This really made the book shine for me, the care between both of them, even as their lack of communication (on the previously mentioned two specific issues only) - the rest of the time it was beautifully expressed dialogue about their fears and hopes - frustrated me.

There are great guest appearances from all the previous couples in this series, and Miles and Reyes remain my favourite of them all, and a few hints are dropped as to where things might go next and I'm excited to find out more about Levi, Hugh and the rest.

A wonderful addition to A.M. Arthur’s Clean Slate Ranch series, Lucky Break is just as unique as each of the previous stories in this series. While all the Clean Slate books could be read as standalones, the friendships build as the story progresses and I think you’d enjoy them better when read in order.

Opposites attract with a bit of an age gap, Lucky Break is a romantic, slow burn romance. The chemistry between the men is clear from the start, but both of the main characters have some serious issues in their pasts which they’re having trouble moving past. As their relationship progresses and the men strive to find more physical intimacy, they start to open up and disclose some of their secrets.

It takes the entire novel for these two to finally come completely clean with each other over all of their past troubles, but A.M. Arthur throws in some great curveballs, and the story flows beautifully. Trust me, once you pick up Lucky Break, you won’t be putting it down.

Thanks to Carina Press and Netgalley for providing me with a copy in exchange for an honest review.

I really enjoy this series. It's fun to read about sexy cowboys falling in love with each other. :) I love being able to see all of the characters from the past few books interacting in this one, building lives with each other and their respective partners.

Overall, these fluffy MM romances with a little bit of realism (tragic events in this one, sadly) usually just make me happy and ease some stress. Though to be fair, there isn't TOO MUCH realism... I mean, really, a whole ranch full of gay and bi men? Also, if that IS a real thing, can someone point me in the right direction? I need to book a week vacation there. :)

Highly recommend this series for those who like MM romance and like to escape a little... especially with cowboys. :)

It’s so easy to get lost in this warm little "getaway" ranch where everyone works together to keep food on the table, guests entertained and coming back, and the horses cared for, as well as the men that have found the ranch a loving and forgiving home. Someone always finding the love of their life there doesn't hurt either.

In this story we meet Robin, a grieving former rodeo star, and Shawn, a quiet cook who has been secretly, for two long years, living in his car. Both characters made brief appearances in previous books, but they fit like a glove with the more established characters, Mack and Wes, Colt and Avery, and Miles and Reyes.

At first, Shawn thinks Robin is a bit strange and very unfriendly, but Robin soon learns that he looks a lot like and reminds Shawn of his husband who died in a rodeo accident. They soon become close friends despite the rocky start. They both carry a lot of secrets as well as emotional baggage, but both men want to be in it for each other, for the long haul.

Clean Slate Ranch lives up to its name for people like Robin and Shawn, who both have such tragic pasts. They can find peace and understanding in this "found family" who takes care of their own. It’s such a warm, cozy community where everyone knows a little too much about one another, but they’d never reveal to anyone or use that information against them. With every new character introduction...in this case, Hugo and Levi, we know there are more good stories to be told in the series.

I've given this an A for narration and a B+ for content at AudioGals, so that's 4.5 stars rounded up.

Lucky Break is the fourth book in A.M. Arthur’s Clean Slate Ranch series, and although it’s the first I’ve listened to, it works perfectly well as a standalone. Characters from the previous books do appear in this one, but there are no overarching plots or storylines, so I didn’t feel I was missing anything by not having read or listened to their stories (although I do plan to go back and do that!) The romance in Lucky Break is a sensual slow-burn that allows the leads plenty of time to get to know one another after a rather inauspicious beginning, although their reticence about their pasts does make for some frustrating moments. But for the most part, this is a tender, character driven story about two emotionally scarred individuals and in spite of the aforementioned frustrations, I enjoyed it.

Clean Slate Ranch and nearby Bentley Ghost Town are popular holiday destinations for people wanting an Old West experience, and true to its name, the ranch has provided fresh starts and new opportunities for workers and visitors alike. When Lucky Break begins, it’s the end of the tourist season, and the Tango Saloon in Bentley is serving up its last meals before shutting up for a ten-week break. Everyone is making plans to go on vacation, to visit friends and family for Thanksgiving and Christmas, but cook Shawn Matthews doesn’t have the luxury of going on holiday – or even a home to go back to – and ten weeks without a paycheck is a serious problem. He sends almost all his earnings to his elderly grandparents, who brought him up after his parents died, but an unpleasant situation five years earlier prompted him to leave home and he hasn’t been back, not wanting to make life awkward for them. He enjoys his work at Bentley and likes the people he works with, but he keeps himself to himself, partly because he finds it hard to trust but mostly because he doesn’t want anyone to find out he’s homeless and living in his car.

After finishing his shift, and with no idea what he’s going to do, things go from bad to worse when Shawn realises his car battery is dead. A similarly dead phone battery means he can’t call a garage, so he ends up walking to the cabin at the Clean Slate occupied by Bentley’s owner, Mack Garrett, to ask for help, something he absolutely hates doing. He also finds it difficult to accept help, but when Mack offers him a bed for the night Shawn can’t find it in him to say no to a night in a proper bed for the first time in two years. The next morning, Shawn wakes to learn that an accident means that the ranch is in need of someone to cook for the skeleton staff and early season guests in January – and (with a huge internal sigh of relief) he offers his services. He very soon finds himself ‘adopted’ into the close-knit circle of friends at the ranch – who are more like family to each other – something he isn’t quite sure how to react to given that he’s been so very alone for the past few years. The same afternoon, he accepts an invitation to go riding with Mack and a small group of the other staff, which is how he meets cowboy Robin Butler for the first time –and is confused and a bit pissed off at the other man’s dismissive reaction to him.

Robin lost his husband Xavier almost three years earlier in a tragic accident, and is freaked out by his first sight of Shawn because he’s the spitting image of his dead husband. Robin is so unnerved by that split second thought he was looking at Xavier that he all but ignores Shawn and determines simply to keep out of the other man’s way for the duration of the ride. He knows he’s being unfair and irrational, but Robin can’t help seeing Shawn’s presence around the ranch as a constant reminder that Xavier is gone.

Fortunately, however, it doesn’t take Robin long to realise he’s being an idiot and to apologise to Shawn for his behaviour. After this, the men strike up a friendship, and as Robin gets to know Shawn, he realises that the similarities he’d noticed between him and Xavier are merely superficial and that they’re very different personalities. The author takes their time to develop the relationship from initial attraction to friendship and then to more, and the lovely slow-burn of the romance is one of my favourite things about the book. There’s a real sense of emotional connection between the couple that feels natural and deepens as the story progresses.

Both men are emotionally bruised and struggling to come to terms with things in their pasts, and while on the one hand, I appreciated that two damaged people would be unlikely to offer up their entire life stories to a new partner straight away, I did sometimes find the piecemeal divulging of their truths to be a little frustrating. On the other hand, I loved that they were so open and honest with each other about the things they did talk about, especially when it came to their physical relationship. Shawn has never really had the time or opportunity to explore his sexuality, and although Robin is older (eight years) and more experienced, he makes it very clear that he’s going to take his cues from Shawn and never pushes for more than Shawn is ready for.

The depth of caring between them is brilliantly illustrated in the last quarter of the story when Shawn has to return to his home town and face many of the people who turned their backs on him. Robin is unstinting in his support and helps Shawn to see that what happened wasn’t his fault and that he’s a good person who deserves to be loved. And later, Shawn helps Robin to start shedding the weight of the guilt he feels over Xavier’s death and to move forward. Because of this and the way they communicate so well, I was completely convinced by the HEA and could easily see these two riding off into the sunset (literally!).

I also enjoyed the wonderful camaraderie and the strong friendships the author has created amongst the characters; there’s a real sense of ‘found family’ and trust among them I loved the way they so quickly brought Shawn into the fold.

Greg Boudreaux’s narration is, as one would expect, flawless. I’ve enjoyed listening to him in a variety of genres and stories and as many different characters – he’s excellent in all of them, but I think he’s at his best in stories like this one, where his ability to convey the tiniest emotional nuance and to portray the truth of the characters is his greatest asset. He’s one of the best vocal actors around, his voice is warm and inviting and his delivery is expertly timed; if you’ve listened to him before, you’ll already know why he’s top of my list of go-to narrators – if not, then you need to get on that right away! Lucky Break might be a good place to start.

Lucky Break was a wonderful story. It was an emotional read with a storyline that was intriguing and interesting. Shawn and Robin have back-stories that were heart-breaking but were also poignant. They brought joy and hope to each other and, together, they were able to overcome obstacles that they both thought were unobtainable. Shawn kept to himself. He didn’t want anyone to know what his situation was. But, when it comes out, he can’t help but be grateful to Sheriff Bradley and to Arthur Garrett for giving him a roof over his head and purpose in life. Something he didn’t have before the Clean Slate Ranch. And, he would never have met Robin. He has to come clean with him, tell him the whole sordid truth. He also has to admit that he has feelings for him and come to terms with it.

Robin thinks he is seeing a ghost. He can’t help but ignore him … the pain is too great. But, the pull is there and he can’t help but enjoy his company. He, too, has to tell him the truth about his past, how he lost his husband and why he can’t sleep. Well, he couldn’t sleep. Until Shawn. Until he decided to move on. Or did he.

As truths come out, Shawn can’t help but worry that he’ll lose Robin to the past. Yes, they are there for each other through good and bad. But, what will happen when the past comes knocking on both of their doors. Will Robin chose Shawn? Will Shawn allow Robin to truly be there for him?

Lucky Break was a really emotional story as both Robin and Shawn face their pasts and go forward.
A. M. Arthur really pulled all the emotional stops out on this one. It was wonderful how she delicately handled Shawn and brought Robin out of himself. I loved how everything played out, how Robin stepped up and out of his mourning. Shawn standing up for himself and understanding Robin’s need to protect him. She just wrote a beautiful love story that had my heart soaring.

A lovely addition to the Clean Slate Ranch series, this story features Shawn, the assistant cook at the ghost-town saloon who helped Miles when his abusive ex showed up in Saddle Up, book three. Robin, one of the ranch hands, befriends Shawn after an initial minor hostility due to the fact Shawn looks like Robin’s former husband, Xander, who died in a rodeo accident three years before. But once Robin gets to know him, the resemblance takes a back seat because Shawn is a completely different personality: shy, sweet, virginal, and reclusive. Shawn has kept the fact he lives in his car a secret for two years, but now that it’s out in the open and he’s given the cabin next to Robin’s, the two slowly become friends, and then more.

The story is a good length and focuses on the slow buildup of a relationship with plenty of kissing and not much else through most of the book as each man slowly begins to share pieces of his past with the other. The author allows time for readers to get to know the characters as they get to know each other and that’s something I appreciate. When circumstances occur that bring Shawn back to his hometown where the public shame and humiliation that forced him out of town took place, Robin accompanies him and finally learns Shawn’s truths.

But it’s not until much later, when they are back at the Clean Slate Ranch, that Shawn learns Robin’s truths about how he lost his husband and the guilt he carries over it. Past characters round out the story and new ones are introduced as I suspect the series may continue for some time—at least, I hope so because I want Derrick and Levi and Hugo to all have their own loves.

As with other books in this series, there’s a sense of family, friendship, trust, and support by all the characters at the ranch. Those who love a sweet cowboy romance, with a small age gap (8 years), should enjoy this one. Add slow burn, virgins, smaller tops, and widower to the tags, and you get the picture of how very nice this story is.

ALL the feels in this book! All of them! 4.5 stars for me, as the emotion and beauty of the relationship helped offset the sometimes total lack of communication!

I absolutely love this series from AM Arthur - super emotional, a nice blend of city and cowboy, and a great group of characters that are family to each other. This is a sweet, slow-paced-burn romance, where there is a second chance of love for Robin, a chance for Shawn to find true love in all forms, and for both of them to find a home, both with each other and with the rest of the members on the ranch.

At first, I was concerned that I wouldn't warm up to Robin - the way he treated and compared Shawn to his deceased husband very early on, didn't sit well with me. However, Robin's patience and compassion for growing a relationship with Shawn really made me change my mind about him. Robin was sweet, thoughtful, and patient, and I absolutely love that he didn't care about preconceived "norms" in the bedroom. He realized that he'd have a different pace with Shawn than with his previous partner, and he respected the pace that Shawn set.

Shawn has had a rough childhood and early adulthood. He's been homeless for 2 years, had to stay away from the only family he has due to a bad situation when he was a teen, and also deals with anxiety and abandonment issues. He has plenty of doubts, both self-doubts and doubts about his relationship with Robin. I was worried when things were going too well and we were only at the 55% part of the story! LOL. There is definitely some angst and some tears, but I love the steadfastness through it all and how everyone was there to support both Shawn and Robin.

I wish there had maybe been a bit more communication to avoid certain blow-ups - there were things that both of them were refusing to tell the other, until it was really forced out of them, but overall I loved reading about Shawn and Robin falling for each other. Loved seeing all of the couples from the previous books included, and that epilogue!

Can't wait for the next story - think it should be Levi (and Hugh!)!

I received an arc through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

I'm really enjoying this series about found family and having a second chance in life, but this is probably my favorite all along.
Robin and Shawn both had secret, and it took a long, long time for some of them to come out. But the way they was there for each other, taking care of each other when needed was so sweet I almost got a toothache.

You have to be in the mood for these books. Just like the previous books in this series it's not a straight journey. The author takes you on twists and turns and then more twists and turns. It's all very slow, very detailed and takes a long time to get to the HEA. But when you do get there, well it's all worth it. I usually prefer my books a little faster. I'm a very impatient reader but I am here for the guys of Clean Slate Ranch.

This is a great installment in the clean Slate Ranch series. Lucky Break is a very heartwarming love story. Shawn's struggling to stand on his own two feet and make ends meet while searching for his place in the world. Robin's making it day by day after losing his husband in a tragic accident he blames himself for. The way they come together is very sweet and slow. It's not breakneck speed, there's no outside drama or angst. It's just two people healing themselves and coming together to be a support with and for each other. I feel like there's some set up for the next book, and I'll for sure be reading it.

3.5 stars ... I have enjoyed this series and the range of characters. This was an enjoyable read but I found Shawn & Robin a bit annoying. Too much “miscommunication” Maybe it was their brooding or just that I wanted to shake them !

Lucky Break was truly such an endearing story like this whole series has been. Now, this review will be much shorter because I forgot I hadn't reviewed it so hopefully, I remember what I need to. Now this story is a M/M love, there is something about seeing two men together in romance. I can't get enough of it. In this book, we see two people that have lived in some tough situations.

Our two main characters are:

-Shawn Matthews --is living in a not so good situation, he currently lives in his car so he can send all his money to help his grandparents. There was a scandal in his hometown where he was forced to leave. He is a cook on the Clean Slate Ranch

-Robin Butler-is a widower, talent with horses and a former rodeo star.

There is quite a bit of tension between these two especially at first, but we soon see the connection quickly form between these two. There is such an emotional feel to this book in a way that strikes a chord to the reader's heart pretty quickly. Their growth and learning to open up to each other is what is pivotal in their story. I got quickly hooked on this couple and wanting to see them overcome what they hold back and be open to love.

Overall I had a blast with this book and truly adored seeing the core of these characters and their love story unraveling was truly beautiful!!

I want to thank A. M. Arthur and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review Lucky Break. I read the first two books about Clean Slate Ranch and loved them. So when I saw this book on NetGalley I jumped at the chance to read it.

I was not disappointed. It was wonderful to reconnect with the characters I loved in the first books. I enjoyed reading about Shawn and Robin as they slowly revealed their secrets and fell in love. All the Clean Slate Ranch books are good stories with a lot of feelings but not too much angst. I look forward to the next book which will be about Derrick. Keep them coming please.

I loved getting back on the ranch with everyone. We get more of the day to day going on which I really loved. Shawn is homeless having to send most of his money home to help his grandparents. His grandmother has Alzheimer and his grandfather is taking care of her. He is living out of his vehicle and has for several years. He is worried when the Ghost Town is closed down because he won't have a job. But and unfortunate accident happens and he finds himself with work up at the main house. Robin is still trying to get over the guilt of the death of his husband. Even though it was an accident, he really blames himself. This was a very slow burn and it worked for these two. Shawn helps Robin move forward and forgive himself. Robin helps Shawn see that he is cared for and that what he went through is not something to be shamed about.

I had a really hard time getting into this book. Although the characters were likable, everything just seemed way too easy and the writing made it very hard for me to engage. Everyone in the book are super communicative and open about their thoughts to the point that it seemed very unrealistic. Beyond that, every internal thought and interaction was explained by the author to be sure that the reader understood EXACTLY why the character said or did what they did. It left me feeling like it was a story being told to me rather than one I was experiencing.

As far as the story, it was very sweet and the relationship between Shawn and Robin was very tender. Even the side characters were likable. Readers who enjoy a very simple, straightforward romance will enjoy this book, but it was a little too pat for me.

Lucky Break is the fourth book in the Clean Slate Ranch series by author A.M. Arthur. I really enjoyed this story. I have not read the previous books in this story and I was not lost starting with this title.
Shawn is a seasonal sous chef at the local saloon. He is about to be jobless for a few months while the saloon goes on break. He is not looking forward to living out of his car, but he does not have a ton of options going for him. This town is the first place in five years that he has felt like he might have found a home.
Robin loves sunshine. He works at the Clean Slate Ranch. Vapes so he doesn’t smell like smoke around the horses and tourists. he has a constant companion with insomnia. He posts sunrises on his Instagram account. He really wants a human connection that means something.
The cook breaks her arm and the sheriff finds Shawn living in his car. It is a lucky break for both men. Shawn gets a home and a job and Robin might have found his special someone.
I loved how easily these two come together. They have a lot of baggage, but they can get through it if they learn to trust each other.
When you want a story to make you believe in true love and good souls can win the day, I highly suggest this book for you.

Thanks to Netgalley for the complimentary copy in exchange for an honest review.

This is my first A.M. Arthur book, but it certainly won't be my last. I love the sense of community she created with the Ranch and I'll definitely be downloading the previous books in the series to learn the stories of how the rest of the couples got together.

I loved how Shawn and Robin's relationship grew slowly over time. They both had some hard things happen to them in their pasts and it felt realistic how slowly they were able to share those with each other. Of course there was some miscommunication that kept them apart, but it was amusing to see the other guys listening and offering relationship advice.

The author included a note that she originally planned this as a trilogy and is currently expanding it. There's at least another book planned for February, and my brain has already started speculating who the next couple could be.

I'm a sucker for cowboys as well as MM romance stories, so when you combine the two I jump at the chance to read them. This the fourth book in the Clean Slate Ranch series. We meet Shawn Matthews earlier on in the series as well as Robin Butler.

Even though we met them both previously I didn't expect to see them together, and it ended being a great unexpected coupling and a great match.

Shawn keeps his life secret from everyone even his co-workers and friends. When his secret comes out, Shawn ends up at the ranch to help cook at the ranch while their main cook recovers. Here is where Robin ends up around him. Robin has his own baggage and seeing Shawn brings up his past to the service.

Both have pasts to go through to find their HEA but both are a bit stubborn. I'm never a fan of the insecure or martyr type story line and unfortunately this story had both in it. At times I found Shawn a bit too whiny for me which dampened the story at times for me.

This series is a great second chance series and I hope there will be more.

2.5 Stars!

Lucky Break is part of the Clean Slate Ranch series, and while past characters are in this one, it can stand on its own. That said, this book drove me crazy. The pacing is incredibly slow, like moves as a snail's pace slow for about two-thirds of the way through. In fact, I set this one aside several times and even thought about giving it up more than once. I felt like I was just meandering along waiting for something to happen. I did like Robin's patience with Shawn, and both guys had their own issues to work through, but the many what-ifs began to grow tedious long before anything substantial happened between this pair. Even after they decide to explore their attraction, the doubt continues, and it continues some more. Yes, I completely get that Shawn had plenty of reason to be insecure, but his inner monologue of doubt about the relationship was repetitive and after a while, annoying. But here's the thing - these guys talk about a ton of stuff, they talk about their feelings, about their experience or lack of in Shawn's case, about family, and so on. They talk about everything except the important stuff, and when that stuff is all revealed, none of it is anything that would break them up. In fact, anyone who would leave someone over the things these guys are dealing with wouldn't be worth the time or trouble. So, in the end, I just didn't get it. This one could've easily been cut in half, and we still would've gotten the meat of the story, and the angst level would've been significantly lower. I have no problem with angsty romances, but this felt like angst just for the sake of angst. I read the last book in this series and liked it enough to continue with this one, but I think this may be the end of the Clean Slate Ranch series as far as I'm concerned.

I had mixed feelings about this book. I really liked the main character, Shawn. He was a lovely guy who had been through a hell of a lot. One of the biggest challenges I had with the story was that nearly everyone was gay! I refer to these kinds of books as "Gay Disneyland'. When most of the ranch hands turned out to be gay and all partnered in healthy relationships ... I began to find it difficult to suspend my disblief.

I also had trouble with the fact that every character in the novel was open, caring and very emotionally expressive whenever they spoke to each other. It just didn't come across as 'real' to me. Now, that being said, I know this is a romance so the point is for people to be parnered up.

I just like a little bit of realism in the stories so I'm probably not the right audience.

The book is well-written and the author fully committed to the characterizations!

Among the plethora of this authors books I have enjoyed, this is one of the few I had a hard time enjoying and sticking with. I hate that the rating system considers 3 stars as negative. For me it just means I liked it okay, simply didn’t enjoy it to the level I prefer. Shawn and Robin are the right sort of characters for the ranch turned gay haven, with troubled histories impacting their ability to seek romantic connections. They do manage to get together, follow a slow path to intimacy and ultimately reach an HEA. The writing is good overall as I expect from Ms. Arthur and the storyline follows her style but when I say slow, I mean glacially slow and the entire reading experience felt like waiting for something to move forward. The narrative is burdened with exposition, following a nearly day by day depiction of mundane activities, with long, repetitive internal monologues from both men. It takes for-freaking-ever, more than half of the book, before the pace picks up and some conflicts build to add spice and stir more interest.

Unfortunately that turns into long stretches of non-communication between the couple as they talk with friends instead of each other. That means relevant details of their past comes out mostly when forced by circumstance, not as ordinary exchanges between lovers learning about each other. I didn’t feel much UST, so so had little anticipation for intimate scenes that I skimmed and skipped over them. The author notes that this was originally planned as a trilogy, so this is a sort of transitional volume, bringing in more secondary characters destined to become subjects of future books. It’s technically well written and the latter half was more engaging. I do anticipate the next installment because of the introduction of the interesting new group of players. I’d recommend reading this for that reason alone, also because you may have an entirely different impression of events than mine.

~~I received a free copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads ~~

This is the fourth book in the series, and I have a great fondness for the inhabitants of the Clean Slate Ranch. I would recommend that you read them in order, as the story is ongoing, but this would be a good read to entice you into the ranch too.

As regular readers will know, the people who work at the ranch have often had a difficult past, and Clean Slate Ranch (CSR) has given them a place to recover and grow. Robin is one such man, and when he meets Shawn and thinks he sees a ghost, all his recovery is called into question as he suffers from the feelings he had been holding in. As the story progresses we get to learn about his past, but also to see that there could be brightness in his future.

Shawn becomes a new soul to find solace at the ranch. He is known to them all as he works at the Bentley Ghost Town, but they had no idea that he had been living in his car the whole time. It was a salutary reminder of not making assumptions about people's circumstances. As he is brought into the CSR family, he too starts to recover his confidence, his trust and his hope. But it only comes in baby steps, and can easily be knocked back - which to an extent the caring Robin gets, giving him a chance to take things slowly. To find lasting happiness they will have to overcome quite a few issues, but along with the CSR family, readers are sure to also be willing them on.

Another good installment to the series, thank you A.M. Arthur.

**I received a free copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads.**

Lucky Break is the fourth book in the Clean Slate Ranch series. You don't have to read the books in order to understand each individual couple but it does make for a better read to have read the past books. This book concentrates on the relationship between Shawn and Robin.

Robin, the horseman on the ranch, has had a painful past. His husband died three years ago leaving Robin in a terrible place in his life. That's how he found himself living and working on the ranch. He isn't interested in a relationship especially one with someone that resembles is husband so much.

Shawn loves being in the kitchen and the routine it brings. He isn't a fan of big crowd or a lot of people so working in the kitchen is perfect for him. When he first meets the handsome cowboy he doesn't understand the standoff ish attitude Robin gives him. Shawn has is own past issues and doesn't push too hard when it comes to Robin, especially when Robin calls him the wrong name after an amazing kiss.

I loved watching the relationship between Robin and Shawn grow. Shawn grew into himself and the family he now had. Robin was sweet and gentle with Shawn each step of the way. I love getting back to the Clean Slate Ranch and seeing how past and present characters are doing. Such a fun-loving series.

A Joyfully Jay review.

3.75 stars

Lucky Break is the fourth book in A.M. Athur’s Clean Slate Ranch series. While the main characters from the first three books all appear here, as well as assorted side characters, this story does stand alone plot-wise. All you really need to know is that most of these guys are friends/co-workers of Shawn and Robin. But being familiar with the past books will give you a nice feel for the rhythms of the series and the key characters, so I think it would enhance your enjoyment here.

One of the things I particularly like about this series is the found family element. Clean Slate Ranch lives up to its name as a place where people can go to put their past behind them and make a new life for themselves. The first three books focus on a trio of close friends, and there are really nice bonds among all the main and side characters. I enjoyed seeing these men settling into their lives and finding a place to belong and fit in. Things are perhaps overly idyllic on the ranch, but I enjoy that about the series. I also really like the ghost town storyline, and while it is not particularly prominent here, it is a fun addition to the series.

I'll admit that I almost stopped reading when Robin got spooked by Shawn's uncanny resemblance to Xander, his dead partner. I mean, this kind of stories always leave me with a niggle of doubt. Really, how much can you trust someone that says: "you could be my beloved deceased husband's twin, but I love YOU!" I ,and call me a cynic, would always question how much of those feelings are because of the resemblance or ,in fact, for myself.

That being said, I'm glad I didn't stop reading. Overlooking the "might be twins" detail, the romance between Robin and Shawn is well written and heart-warming. It gets frustrating at times, because these two lack any communication skills and they could of avoided a lot of drama just by talking to each other. But they're so sweet and amazing together once they decide to give their best at making things work.

𝗟𝘂𝗰𝗸𝘆 𝗕𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗸 is the story of two troubled souls finally finding home and happiness with one another. And also family with the members of Clean Slate Ranch.

Recommended.

This was good, not great, and certainly not the best book in the series. But I still enjoyed it and found myself wanting to read to find out what exactly happened in their past to make them so skittish. I felt that Shawn and Robin kept a lot hidden from one another for too long in the book. I got that they were in a new relationship and had to build that trust. But it made the book drag on longer than I think was needed.

Robin came off more immature than Shawn at times, despite Robin being 8 years older. Maybe not so much immature, but rather oblivious or disrespectful towards Shawn's feelings. Like the club scene where his go-to booty call shows up and they start dancing. Or the part where he just completely ignores Shawn in favor of spending time with his old best friend Levi. He could have at least invited him along or made him not feel so cast aside.

In the end, I liked both guys a lot and think that once they opened up about their pasts, they were finally able to move forward in both their relationship with each other and their friends.

Another issue I had was the editing in this ARC - it still has some work to go. I read the same sentence multiple times on different pages more times than I could count (or phrased in an eerily similar manner). It got to the point where I was confused and thought that maybe I had somehow hit the back page button instead of advancing.

If you've read the other books in the series, then it will come as no surprise that there are a lot of gay couples living their HEA out at Clean Slate Ranch and more men working there that are gay/bi and likely to partner up in the future. So for me, that wasn't as bothersome as some other reviewers will note. I just got use to it. Is it realistic? Absolutely not, but it's still enjoyable. I listened to the audio versions of the first 3 books, so I was very excited to get an ARC for this one and can't wait for Levi/Hugh's story next (or I hope it's them).
