The book needed proof reading before being published. So many grammatical errors throughout that it became monotonous. Factual errors also such as bumble bees producing honey for human consumption? I think that would be honey bees. Have someone read the book before printing!

Mediocre story, terrible editing

I enjoyed the first half of this book, it had real potential and I thought that, among other things, we hear about how people learn to adapt to leaving without power. Instead it turned into nothing but s violent bloodbath and pages and pages about the hatred of the terrorists. Every fight scene was a repetition of the one before. Jo was the super woman hero you couldn't really root for because her character was so unlikable after the way she failed her daughters after her husband died, which was the only reason she was "prepared" for what happened. And - minor spoiler alert - after most of the area's population was brutally killed by the terrorists, the country under attack with no power, the sheriff still wanted to "uphold the law" and ARREST the people who invaded the country ?? And put them where?? And he handcuffed one of few men in his village who could actually shoot a gun properly as the are fighting a war, for saving their lives??

On top of everything else l wonder if anyone edited this book, at all! There were so many typos, repeated words, missing words, I stopped reporting the errors to Amazon and just wondered how this book could be published like that. At the 60% mark l started to just flip the pages to see how the story actually ended. Disappointing altogether although it had some potential.

Prepped and ready!

As a Pepper myself, but coming from a farming family that always stayed ready, I found this book to be spot on. To express concerns about not being ready for WTSHTF one only has to look at the tragedy in New Orleans after
the hurricane. The book reveals how one mother decided to save her family from any tragedy. Becoming self sufficient is not expressed enough in our society on a daily basis. This book lays out a mother's choice for dwelling, providing and protecting her children. Also teaching her children survival skills to save themselves. I'm afraid most kids think an I Phone will save them!! This scenario could happen at anytime. This book held my interest from start to finish. The town / village coming together to survive is a good way for a community to begin their prep!
The book was easy to follow, engrossing, well written with correct terms for an ammunition magazine as opposed to a clip. Along the line of "One Second After" it lays out the prospects of attack by enemies on our own US soil. Don't think it won't happen, just be ready for when it does. Got some good suggestions from this book I will put into use. This is a must read for those concerned about WTSHTF .... When The Shit Hits The Fan!

Ok, I can live with the lack of character development. I really wanted to like this book. Many will like it. I could only read about 25% of it before "putting it down."

The main reason? When the mayhem hits, it's hard to know why the terrorists are doing what they are doing and what their strategy is. It's like, "suddenly people are getting shot up." Ok, fine.

People will like this book regardless because it affects their sense of security, feeling under siege by bad elements. People like those stories, don't we all?

Also, one annoying thing was the daughter of the main character and her friend leaving their dorms. The friend wanted to get her sunglasses, but the daughter said no, we don't have time. Well, sunglasses can be very useful, particularly in a dangerous, outdoor situation.

In other words, the writer alludes to actions without explaining them. Like eminent danger is ahead, we have to leave immediately. Without saying so and the daughter already knowing the mayhem is ahead without really knowing the situation. Too bad.

I found this to be an excellent well written novel.
I feel the characters and the story line worked extremely well together.
Others may feel it is lacking but if this happened today this would be your situation and you wouldn't be able to find out how or why all this was happening.
Very scary as it could happen anytime just like this.
How would you cope?

The Last Cabin

The premise of the book is great. The characters are quasi believable....But seriously, can one woman save the town alone? She isn't Rambo.

Would I recommend this r? Yes. It is interesting. Mom has definitely gone off the grid and deserves a tin foil hat award.

Problems: Mom lives in a rural mountain town not far from Knoxville, Tennessee. To drive to approximately where she lives to the UTK campus, and this is in a car would be 90 minutes. How does she get there and back in hours on foot?

Does Mom ever sleep?

Quotes:
" And so she began to bargain with a God that she didn’t even know existed or not." This statement is why Muslims feel like they will win. They pray and believe that their God exists. The author should embrace Christianity or even Judaism. Believing in God.

A bit confusing. The books in the "set" are all written by different authors with different plots and characters. I read this title as part of a 4 book set (not 51). The different takes on what could happen after an EMP were fascinating and mostly page turners.... except for the fillers that involved all the introspection characters went through over and over and over again. I actually started skimming those parts since I'd already heard it enough times already, and wanted to get to the action.

Another thing I have to say regarding these ebooks... get an editor! Or at least use a word processing app that has a grammar checker. It is very annoying to notice words that are skipped, duplicated, or just the wrong word!

Strong female characters

Jo is the most obvious, her daughters next obvious, but not to be downplayed were Jan the lady cop and Mags the shop owner.

Interesting twist, to have Jo's prepper cabin and most of its supplies made unavailable to her. Very like real life - the battle plan falls apart as the first bullet is fired.

I'd like to think we (as Americans) could pull together and fight during such a crisis. Most "end of the world" scenarios show us falling apart and killing each other over canned peaches.

A good read - I couldn't put it down and read it in one day. (Some editing would help.)

I didn't like it as much as I thought I would. I felt the character development was shallow. Jo was stricken after her husband's death an withdrew from society. Later on in the book her daughter mentions her mother leaving them with family and leaving the two sisters with an aunt. There was shallow interplay between sheriff Mike and Jo. He had always had feelings for her but never told her. Then Jo was the terminator at the end of the book taking on the army of terrorists who had cells everywhere in the country. But the Village was saved and a year later all was good? Really? what about all those terrorists cell through out the country?

Could an EMP really deem us powerless?! If it happens we are all going to suffer. Some of the scenes in this book were a little far-fetched, in my opinion, but at the same time it really got me thinking. What's to stop terrorist from coming to town and killing everyone? I hope our intelligence agencies would never let it get this bad, but could it really happen? This book really made me think about how unprepared I would be in a crisis. Makes me want to go out and buy bottled water and non-perishable foods.

I enjoyed the story and loved the heroine who presented a strong female character though with vulnerabilities. I also liked the fact it was about EMP survival, which could occur from a so!ar flash or a man-made detonation.
I would have liked to know more about how the EMP is occurred in this book and about the backstory how terrorists were able to infiltrate at the level they were depicted by the author. Some of which detracted from the overall plot. Overall though an action-packed tale.

There was a lot about this story that kept me riveted to it. The main character, Jo, was very believable, and I could relate to her. The concept of this kind of terrorist attack is very plausible. I would have liked to have seen more catchier development, however, especially of the enemy. The way the enemy was described was very cliche. I would like to know more about the main characters, including the terrorist leader, and would have liked to be able to sympathize with them on some level, to make this a more well rounded story.

Really stupid

This book is a one-dimensional anti-Muslim screed. There is no way that pods of Muslim soldiers are stashed around the US waiting to set off an EMP and rampage among us in a killing spree. We have much more to fear from the anti-government radical right than Muslim immigrants. So, not only does the plot provoke the readers incredulity as it is extraordinarily far-fetched, it is also xenophobic, which in itself is the mark of a small and poorly developed intellect. Don’t bother reading as the writing is also clunky with poorly developed characters.

This is a fairly grim portrayal of an terrorist caused EMP and attack on US cities and towns. While there were parts of the story that I liked, the characters were, for the most part, very one dimensional and the terrorists predictably brutal. It made little sense to me that with a finite number of "boots on the ground" the terrorists would focus on a small area of Tennessee to cause such mayhem. It also seemed very fast that after only a year with an EMP of this magnitude, power would be back and life was back to normal, college classes and all.

Read it in one day

I couldn’t put this book down, I read it in one day...only stopping to make pizza. The action and suspense were mesmerizing. Each moment built on the previous intense moment until I was holding my breath.

I have read several EMP disaster books and this one was excellent. A mother protecting her children (and village) against an insane and evil, well organized terrorist and his associated organization made for a good story and had a different spin than the other novels I have read.

Worth a read if you like action and suspense.

Thrilling

This book was a very good read. It's a little too addictive even as I kept saying just one more chapter....one more page. It's harsh to put down. The characters are easy to understand their point of view. The layout described in detail. Everything accounted for. And some of it really makes you think about the choices you would make in a similar situation. I am beginning to wonder how long these will be works of fiction and become a reality? Fascinating read and definitely would recommend

great action, strong female characters, less typos!

I’m reading the entire Amazon EMP series, and I have to say James Hunt is one of the better authors. This book has significantly less typos than the last few books in the series. I liked the strong female characters, although I did feel some of the characters could have been better developed. Some of the action was a little far fetched but kudos to the author for coming up with new ideas after having written so many survival novels!

To say this was an eye opening look at how ill prepared we would be if an EMP was ever deployed and a war by foreign terrorists was ever engaged within the boundaries of the US is actually a truth.

To say that this same scenario would work out in the manner portrayed however stretches my belief in our true ability to ably overcome such forces.

While things stand a good chance of working out positively they also stand a good chance of not doing so.

My hope is we never have to find out!

The author has done it again, written a down to earth, interesting ploy. Set in dystopian future we meet a mother who is fighting for not only her survival but that of her two children in this dangerous new world. The dialogue between the characters is interesting and believable as are the dangers that could occur in a situation such as this. This is a great read for anyone who enjoys this genre.

The Cabin and the little family (NO spoilers)

Intense story of the apocalypse. A true capable female lead character.
An EMP ostensibly brings the US to it’s knees. A middle-eastern-driven invasion is directed at The Village in Tennessee, the setting of The Cabin.
A widow and her two daughters are the focus of the story.
A few dozen grammatical editing errors detracted from the story but I kept the 5-star rating regardless.

Solidly satisfying read.

Was a bit cautious that this book would be just another apocalypse tale. The author interspersed enough interpersonal stress between the main characters to keep me reading till the end. The author didn't fully draw out how the invading force got such a foothold in this country. This is a vast geography to invade and that part stretched credulity for me. Nonetheless a enjoyable afternoon's reading.

great heroine!

Jo Mercer left the social niceties behind when her husband died. She was devastated and zoned out for a time. She did realize that she had to check back in because her daughters needed her. She did reconnect with her oldest daughter and as they recreated their relationship, horrible things began to happen. Did they survive, well read the book and be surprised. Wonderful read with a few areas of poor editing that were easy to read over.

After reading so much Post Apocalyptic works by the likes of Franklin Horton, A. American & AJ Newman, the Bar has been set pretty high. It's difficult to find anything that comes close. This one was a solid 3/5, perhaps 3.5, so I gave it a 4. I have an eye condition that makes reading difficult, so I listen to Audiobooks. I think the narrator of this one may have hurt its punch. A female narrator doing a book where almost all of the main characters are male, probably not the smartest move.

A very well-written book of the time following an EMP. This book contains great characters - people who try to survive in their own ways. Easy to judge when we have plenty to eat. Excellent story - I highly recommend this.

I enjoyed this novel very much!

I have read several of these EMP stories and I have enjoyed this story the best. I liked the setting better as it took place in the mountaineering stead of a large city. It got the story set up without spending a lot of time explaining what emp was. It held my interest and moved the story along at a good pace.

A complete story in one book!

With all the illegal immigration at the southern border it is very timely to write about hidden terror cells. We really have no idea who is here. One loose end was Randy. Never did know what became of him. Altogether it was an entertaining way to spend a few hours. I enjoy all the stories by James Hunt.

Thrilling on the edge of your seat read from start to finish

Wow, I do not usually read EMP type books but I was drawn in by the description of a strong woman protecting her family. It was not hard to feel immersed in the story right away. Having once lived in East Tennessee it was easy to picture the setting. Great thrill ride that made me realize it could happen.
