Millie Watson doesn’t often take initiative when it comes to work but when an old friend – or, rather, acquaintance she can’t stand – wants to hire her to solve a potential haunting at her upscale home, Millie jumps at the chance.
In truth, Millie doesn’t care about finding a ghost. She does have a specific form of payment in mind, though, and it’s something she’s itching to collect on.
Since Millie can’t actually see ghosts, she calls in the only person she knows who can… Charlie Rhodes. Unfortunately for Millie, Charlie is a bit distracted with relationship issues of her own. Still, the gregarious psychic volunteers to pitch in. Before she found freedom, Millie was in a high-class world full of snooty and entitled people. That’s full on display now when she tries to track down the source of the ghostly disturbances… and comes up with a litany of human transgressions instead.
Millie is determined to find answers, although not because she wants to help a friend. She wants payment, and she’s not going to stop until she gets it. She just needs to avoid trouble – which is easier said than done – while she’s searching for answers.
Note: This is a 30,000-word short set in the Charlie Rhodes Universe. It is set between The Undead Uproar and The Incubus Impasse.
When I was a kid, I was torn between whether or not I was going to grow up and be the Incredible Hulk or Wonder Woman. I flirted with being a Jedi Knight for awhile, but I wasn't up for the intense travel associated with the gig. In my teens, I settled on being a writer -- although I had no idea the effort that would entail. Not only am I a writer now, but I'm a writer in several different mediums. I'm a longtime newspaper reporter, an avid reader and a voracious science fiction fanatic.
Millie is on a mission to help out an old enemy, and her friend Charlie. While trying to figure out what's going on with her friend, and get her to be happy again things are starting to look puzzling for Millie on this new case she's taking solo, well, with the help of Charlie that is.
This was a great short story that added a little extra to Charlie and Jack and also gave us insight into Millie. I adore Millie even more now, and I can't wait for the next book!
I had extremely high expectations for this book, and it fell slightly short. I was excited for a Millie POV story and was expecting Bernard to play a larger role. Instead, we got a short story from Millie's POV that still revolved mostly around Charlie and Jack. This story made Charlie seem even more insecure and weaker than normal. She is afraid of her own shadow and perks up at the slightest compliment.
The story itself was good but was much darker than the normal stories. There were a few more darker adults themes in the story and did not have the same fun, lighthearted air to it. I was surprised at some of the themes mentioned. It was nice to learn more about Millie and Myron's marriage and we get a better look into Millie's reasons for doing things. The story made me like Millie even more!
Its still a decent read and I would recommend it to anyone reading through the series. That said, I will likely skip it on future read-throughs. Cheers and happy reading.
When one of Millie's acquaintances from her days as Myron's wife asks her directly for help to deal with a haunting despite having thrown Myron a party to celebrate his divorce Millie can't resist taking the job.
Adele is arrogant, rude and determined that no one in her social circle discovers what's going on not even her husband Arthur. With some help from Charlie and Jack it's soon apparent that the problem is less supernatural and rather more human. With staff being fired at the drop of Adele's hat, Arthur's disinterest in his marriage and lots of disgruntled employees can they whittle down the suspects and save the couple from their just desserts?
Millie is a great character. This short story was a great way to showcase how fun she is and to help Jack and Charlie in their after stages of the secret reveal. I liked learning more about her. Hope the "group's" bylaws are skimmed over in the next book since Millie stated she and Chris worked on them in the start up and that they are different than the other group's in the company. Would love to see something about Laura getting transferred to a different group. Whether it was permanent or not I think it would be funny how that goes.
Recommended series. As are all Amanda M Lee books, also her Lily Harper Hart mysteries.
This was okay. It felt like Millie was more subdued. I also had an expectation that this would be more Millie, less Charlie and Jack. Charlie and Jack were minor characters in the story but, Millie spent a lot of time thinking about them or talking to one of them about the other. Plus, it made Charlie seem really whiny and mad Jack seem like a bigger jerk. The mystery to solve was interesting. We also get a peek at Millie's life before she divorced Myron. I would have like to see more of Millie without her hovering around Charlie. It might have been fun to see Millie and Bernard on an adventure. You do not have to read this to keep up with the series.
An old acquaintance from Millies past gets in touch, she needs help.with what she thinks is a ghost haunting her house and comes.to Millie for help as knowing the job she does investigating paranormal events, makes her a sort of expert. Millie doesn't like the woman but agrees to investigate for a.price.and drags Charlie.along with her. After all of there is a ghost Charlie will.sense him/her given her special.talents and be able.to deal.with him/her.
Loved this quick read. I loved the sarcasm with the maid Mercedes and always love Millie. Glad we got to see Charlie and Jack figure out how to move forward after New Orleans. In this short mystery, someone from Millie's past hires her to discount if her house is being haunted by ghosts. She takes Charlie along for the ride for obvious reasons. During their investigation, Jack turns up some shady characters within the household staff. Love getting to touch base with some of my favorite characters from this author.
A Charlie Rhodes short with the magnificent Millie in charge, I just knew I was going to love this one Millie is an absolute favorite character of mine.
I have to say it was nice to only have a little of Laura in this one she really grates on my nerves... I love Millie and this story was so her on every level, her brand of sass and sarcasm is on another level altogether.
The bits with Charlie and Jack were sweet even when they were awkward...lol
The story was fascinatingly funny and I loved the ending talk about convoluting and drama-filled...lol this was a great laugh-a-mystery.
A great story. I love when authors do short stories for their different series focusing on specific characters. It gives you a background and historical point of view over their character. We find out a little bit more about Millie and the life she had before she joined a group of supernatural hunters. Back when she was married to Meyer and her current boss and owner of the foundation she works for. Join Millie Charlie and Jack as they solve a mystery tied to people from Millies past. And entertaining read from beginning to end.
I have enjoyed several of Amanda M. Lee’s series. Charlie is a particularly cute character, with her strong power balanced by her youth and innate niceness. (There’s more, but I don’t want to give too much away.) Millie is pure fun to read about. Irascible, loyal, sneaky and good. Everyone should have a friend like that.
This short is fun, and works as a stand-alone. It’s even better if you read the the books in succession.
Another great book by Amanda M. Lee. I enjoyed Millie on a Mission, it was a short story that gives of more insight on these great characters! Mills always makes me laugh, she is a kick in the pants and I loved having Charlie and Is I along for the ride!
Pure reading entertainment and escapism, true to Amanda M Lee's other books and short stories. Millie is an appealing character to read about and I loved getting her perspective on things. A good addition to the Charlie Rhodes time line.
This book does an excellent job of providing Millie's perspective and makes the character much more interesting. The mystery takes an interesting turn or two. I am curious how the next book will fit.
Wish this book was longer! I love this author and constantly count down the days to her next release in all of her book series. There are several coming up in the Fall, and I cannot wait! This was an awesome addition to this particular series!
Millie works for her ex-husband. She and her co-workers work in the basement solving mysteries. The case Millie takes is for Adele. Adele is sure she is being haunted by ghosts. It turns out her husband's lover is helping an ex-con gaslight Adele.
As clever as Amanda Lee is in her short stories, if you're expecting magic to take center stage you'll be disappointed--no magic here (one minor incident). Still, an enjoyable read.
A former acquaintance from Millies past approaches her to solve a ghost problem at her home. Millie takes Charlie in case it actually is a ghost. Jack gets involved and it turns into a comedy of errors.
The story was engaging enough that I read it in one sitting unable to put it down. The relationships between the characters and the personalities of the characters made it fun and entertaining. The plot flowed very well and the ending a surprise.
I was excited to read a short starring Millie but then disappointed when Charlie and Jack were still such a huge part of it. I wanted more of Millie and Bernard. The mystery was okay but was just an example of how messed up rich people are.
