This is a charming story of three sisters - Pip, Ottie and Willow, daughters of Declan Lorne of Lorne Castle, Kilmally, Ireland and his wife Serena. Declan’s lineage is an ancient one of over 700 years but the castle and its estate is in financial straits like so many other large estates. The book starts really well with a 30th wedding anniversary celebration party that larger than life Declan has thrown for his friends and family while Willow is being a rock chick at a U2 concert in Crowe Park, ...more

The Christmas Party set in south-west Ireland tells the story of the Lorne family living in the 700 year old Lorne Castle. Declan Lorne, the last living knight in Ireland, his wife Serena and their three grown daughters Ottie, Pip and Willow may be the end of the Lorne legacy. With no male heir and an ever mounting amount of costly repairs required on the ageing castle it looks like Lorne Castle will need to be sold.

The Christmas Party is a story of family, heritage and the massive f

When Willow received the call from her eldest sister Ottie to say their father was dying, she immediately raced from Dublin to the castle that her family owned. She drove through the night, desperate to see her father before it was too late. The shock and devastation felt by the three sisters, Ottie, Pip and Willow was matched by the grief their Mam was feeling. The further shock after the funeral was over for a much-loved Declan Lorne, the 29th knight of Ireland, was felt all over again when th ...more

Beguiling, quaint, and heartwarmingly festive!

The Christmas Party is an alluring, heartfelt story that sweeps you away to the beautiful, rugged coastline of southwest Ireland in winter and immerses you into the lives of the Lorne family as they endure a great loss, accept the things they cannot change, confront the past, repair strained relationships, take chances, and embrace the future.

The prose is evocative and well turned. The characters are distressed, vulnerable, ge

What a great Christmas romance by Karen Swan. I really enjoyed the story behind the family. Lots of audible gasps, several laugh out loud moments and yes a few tears too.
A lovely lovely Christmas story, perfect for the lead up to Christmas with a reminder of what is important in life❤

Superspeed readers like me can read 150 - 200+ pages, so yes, I have read the book … and many more today. LOL

I received a temporary digital Advance Reader Copy of this book from #NetGalley, the publisher and the author in exchange for an honest review.

From the publisher, as I do not repeat the contents or story of books in reviews, I let them do it as they do it better than I do 😸.

The Christmas Party by Karen Swan is another decadent treat from an author who consistently delivers the sweeping family chronicles that we have come to expect. This is a story of family, long buried secrets, and the redemptive and healing powers of forgiveness, all wrapped up in a cozy package.

The last knight of Ireland has died unexpectedly, leaving his ancestral home, Lorne Castle, to the stewardship of his three daughters. Having lived their entire lives believing that they have

This was a book that I just couldn’t put down. It’s main focus was on the Lorne family and the relationship between the three sisters but also between the mother and the youngest sister, Willow. There are a few secrets to uncover, one being why did Willow leave the family castle three years ago and go to live in Dublin. There is also the sense of community within a small village, where everyone knows each other and often meet in the local inn. Romance features, although the reader is never quite ...more

Karen Swan books are romances for people who think they don’t like romance. I say this because I am one of those readers who shunned the romance genre but Swan’s books have won me over to the light side. I am just about the crotchetiest reader you can imagine; I don’t like romance, I don’t like Christmas, I don’t like anything sappy and sweet but I have enjoyed several of her books in the past so I was excited to get my hands on this one. It is true that her books feature burgeoning romantic rel ...more

This is my first Karen Swan book, and I loved it!  The story is set around a castle in Ireland at Christmas and has plenty of family drama going on, a death, a near-death, affairs and family secrets, a real page-turner.

The story is all about the Lorne family - there's Serena (Mother), Declan (very recently deceased Father) and the three daughters - Ottie (runs the campsite on the family land / having an affair with a married man), Pip (runs the stables / trekking tours, loves her hor

This is the first book I've ever read by Karen Swan, but oh my goodness, it won't be the last! This is the story of three sisters, Ottie, Pip and Willow, who are the daughters of the last Knight of Ireland - the last, because he had three daughters and no sons. The family live in the castle that has belonged to their family for 800 years.

The sisters are very different, and they are all harbouring secrets, two of them huge, and one devastating. You don't get to learn of the devastating secret th

A castle belonging to the last knight in Ireland, three disparate daughters and an inheritance are the basis for this heartwarming story about family secrets. The perfect fairytale!

I loved this one. I read it via the Pigeonhole app and really enjoyed reading each stave every day. It takes you on a ‘feel good’ and, at times, emotional journey through the ups and downs and twists and turns of family life. It fair warms the cockles of your heart. I thought it dealt with the more serious

Three very different sisters. An Irish castle. Secrets, twists and heartbreak, and oodles of delicious, festive romance.

Unputdownable perfection.

MY THOUGHTS:

I received this book in exchange for my honest review.

I have come to love reading Karen Swans’ contemporary Christmas books. I’ve also reviewed and interviewed this remarkable author.

Karen Swan is known for creating complex, strong women characters who are put into extraordinary situations and intoxicating settings. She adds elements of suspense and mystery, along with romance to drive tension and create conflict that leads to explosive conclusions

Christmas approaches, and the Lorne estate is in turmoil. The family patriarch - Declan Lorne, the last Knight in Ireland - is dead, and the reading of his will threatens to tear the family apart. The two oldest daughters, Pip and Ottie, have inherited as expected, but why has the castle been left to youngest daughter Willow, who left the estate years before and never looked back? As Christmas draws near, family secrets both old and new are revealed, and life at Lorne will never be the same...

Although given a Christmas season title, this is not really a Christmas story until the very end.

Declan Lorne, last surviving knight in the Republic of Ireland, and owner of a castle that is falling into increasing disrepair, dies suddenly, leaving a widow and three adult daughters. As they struggle to come to terms with his will and the financial mess he has left behind, they also have to wrestle with relationship problems, both with each other and with men.

This took me a couple of chapters to get into however it was well worth persevering as I was soon engrossed by sisters Ottie, Pip and Willow. Each of them were so different both in looks, personality and interests but all were well written and I liked each of them. I felt this book took Karen Swan’s writing in a new direction but not in a negative way more an extension to her ability. The storyline was original and inspired without too much predictability and it’s a not overly based around Chris ...more

This book is not really a Christmas book. It’s only the final few chapters that mention Christmas

This is the story of three sisters in Ireland who are left shocked after the sudden death of their father and the reading of his will

The book was written very well but apart from a couple of twists it was very predictable.
This was an ok read but nothing special.

This was my first Karen Swan book and I thoroughly enjoyed it. So happy that I no have all her other books to read. It wasn't overly Christmassy so could be read at any time of the year. Set in the beautiful rugged countryside and as a runner I was excited that it included an ultra run. Loved the setting, loved the characters, loved the drama. Thank you to The Pigeonhole for the chance to read this title.

I read this in 'staves' via the Pigeonhole app - which actually made the book much more enjoyable! As well as seeing the comments from others, I was also restricted in how much I could read each day - but additionally motivated to read each day because a new stave was delivered. It's an interesting way of reading!

There wasn't quite enough Christmas in this book - for one that had such a festive cover and title! It was halfway through before Christmas was even really mentioned - and the only bit

What a delicious story, it grabs you from the first paragraph, and doesn’t let you go until the end, where you just might need a few tissues on mop up the happy tears.
Declan Loren has three daughters, Ottie, Pip and Willow; but he has no son to take over the title; just a huge castle that is crumbling before their eyes and not enough money to put it right. Then he dies after a big party to celebrate thirty years of marriage to his adored wife. He had a condition that he knew would kill him

**Book Review** So I usually only start putting Christmas decorations up on December 1st but you can be sure that as soon as we hit November I’m already thinking about Christmas. Romance and Christmas, a perfect combination for lovers of this type of genre. The ending is reasonably predictable as a happy ending is expected, but this doesn't spoil the reader's pleasure because it is so easy to fall in love with the 3 Lorne girls, Ottie, Pip and Willow. All so very different, the sisters are reeling from the sudden death of their father, the last knight at the Irish castle, the home that is falling down around their ears and draining every bit of financial resources they c ...more

This book was definitely more of a family drama than a lighthearted Christmas story, and I was hoping for the latter when I picked it up. Whilst eventually I did find myself getting quite into all the different plots of the three sisters, it took a while for this book to really get going for me. I think I would’ve preferred this book if it had just been from Willow’s perspective and I’d have been able to really connect to one main character, as opposed to all three sisters. It's not often you get to read about a modern-day knight, and in The Christmas Party, this is exactly what we get. Well, actually it's more the legacy of a knight.
Declan Lorne is the last surviving knight in Ireland, his family having carried the title over 700 years. And it looks like he's going to be the last ever knight too, having a family consisting of his wife and three feisty daughters.
His sudden demise leaves a huge gap in the lives of all his family, and his will sets many c
