Rating: 5 stars

I haven't read much lately, much less RH ; I have been trying to stay away from the bully romance trope that keeps popping up every now and then.
Because of that, most of my reads have been flops. I am disheartened with cruel characters, emotionally weak heroines and sharing eagerness. The genre is becoming more boring each day, reheating one story after another and my unappreciative ass cannot help but to complain. le sigh.

But what a delight Magic Trials was! To be perfectly honest, without the plump and the global disappointment, I would probably have rated the book 4 stars instead of 5, but right now I feel it deserves everything.

I had never read any books by Meg Xuemei X and went without much expectations but Magic Trials hit most of my soft spots: strong heroine, boarding school, some sass, possessive alpha males not too happy about sharing, and while the jerk of the group takes the bullying path, it's not her against everyone and most definitely not her against all of her love interests.
And that ladies and gentlemen, that's my jam.

The only con would be that it went far too fast and I seriously cannot wait for the next book, especially with the appearance of a much awaited character. I feel like it's going to be a bloody blast!

Down right bad

Ok, so, this book has a storyline that could be pretty freaking good, sadly the book was beyond bad with the worse childish writing skills I've ever seen! This book was beyond goofy, it was also all over the place and made no sense? The author tries making the heroine funny and super witty, strong, and super desirable, she fell through all these unfortunately, but then again the book was complete garbage so it really doesn't matter.

Magic Trials by Meg Xuemei X
Half-Blood Academy series #1. Fantasy, reverse harem romance erotica. Cliffhanger.
Lucifer has brought Hell to half of Earth, and four demigods rule the other half. Marigold is a hunter in the Great Merge and her companions are forced to join the Half-blood Academy even though she’s human. The survival rate of the students is dismal for those with powers, so Marigold fears she’s sure to die. As a result, she has no problems fighting back with whatever she has as well as telling off anyone she can. Her attitude is vocal until the Demi-gods all claim her and she finds herself seduced with more than one of them.

Pop up powers and Insta lust, fighting, bullying, and an abrupt end to this installment.
A book club challenge. Inconsistent writing.

I knew it was going to be bad when (in the first chapter) the pov character’s cock hardened twice in the space of a couple minutes. I mean, if one of the love interests has problems like that it doesn’t bode well, right?

I hadn’t yet dived in to the academy craze so I thought I’d give one a try. Guess I picked the wrong one. It reads like a badly written rush job. The characters act like kids, and the heroine is one of those annoying, overpowered Mary Sues that I just want to drop kick into space.

I guess the author just wanted to jump on the bandwagon and ride the trend wave for some moolah. Which I have no problem with (gimme more books!), if they at least do decent job of storytelling. This author did not.

Bad. Very bad. Avoid.

I read this book before I swore to myself I would never read reverse harem again.

This is part of the reason.

This book was bland, boring, really cringey at times. The romance between her and the four gods is VERY forced and it was a bit sickening to read. (Or maybe that's just me).

The guys fighting each other and falling at her feet is just... meh. Very boring. I don't know if I just don't like reverse harem, but this one was just too much.

And the nicknames. *gags*

This was bad. The heroine is unlikable. She is supposed to be spunky and fearless but comes across as annoying. Rating this because although I DNF, I'm more than halfway through, so it counts.

2.75 stars... Yeah, I know. Pretty hard to rate this one.

❌ One the one hand, it was OTT dramatic, super campy, and had a hugely overblown prose style. There were also elements of insta-love and the heroine was a huge Mary Sue (every power in the universe & NATURAL LAVENDER HAIR).

✔️ On the other hand, the heroine is a strong bitch who really knows how to hold onto a grudge (she does NOT just roll over and accept the hero who mistreated her, in fact she tries to make the other heroes beat him up in the sequel) and it was at times pretty funny.

So... make up your own mind based on this review, I suppose... I can't quite tell if I'm glad I read it or not, for what it's worth.

Nope.
Besides the metaphors discribing a man's penis that were absolutely awful, I just can't understand how the main character went from angry to aroused in a second. It drove me nuts. Also, making out with someone half conscious is sexual assault, whether or not she decides then that she likes it before saying that she wasn't all there.
So much nope.

Magic Trials is book one of the Half-Blood Academy series. This book is installment style so it just randomly ends and then the next book picks up where this one left off.

This is the first book that I have read by this author and it won't be my last. I was captivated from beginning to end. I really enjoyed reading Magic Trials.

This series is reverse harem but we didn't really get the RH aspect yet from book 1. The harem has been introduced and is more of an enemies to lovers trope at present. So far the main character, Marigold has kissed two of the harem and had dream sex with a third and only one of the harem is exhibiting strong feelings for her by the end of the book.

I am really looking forward to finding out what happens next so I am reading book 2 immediately.

Yet another really good addition to the KU academy craze. Author Meg Xuemei X has a penchant for creating pretty captivating worlds on a dime and doesn't disappoint with her newest series starter. Really fast read, I was absorbed cover to cover. It was sassy, sarcastic, steamy, and pretty darn entertaining. The author has once again created a troublesome, hostile, give no effs FMC, though in all honesty Marigold (odd name for a heroine by w/e) seems a tad more on the balanced side than some of her other FMC's.

Marigold has been living off the radar with her companions as hunters. That is until her companions are discovered and by association she is as well. Not only does she stick her neck out for her friends but she falls under the attention of one of the 4 demigods ruling and fighting against Lucifer's hoards. Axel, son of Ares himself, is intrigued by this firey beauty that not only doesn't bow and cower to his powers but also baits him by throwing up the bird in face. Senseing a hidden power within her he assumes she has god blood and drags her off to Half-Blood Academy to undergo the ritual that will identify her parentage as well as free her powers. Everything just goes wrong from there on, the ritual goes haywire ad Marigold absorbs the heavenly fire as all of the gods symbols pop up on her. Now here she is unclaimed and with no idea who she is and having to put up with all these arrogant, a holes telling her what to do and tempting her all at the same time. Not to mention her dreams are haunted by a dark angel like figure with wings that sets her on fire. And now Poseidon's son Paxton has royally ticked her off making her tap into her amazing powers.

We really have just barely touched all the potential for this story here and we ended.. abruptly to say the least. Hopefully book 2 will be out fast because of course I wanted to head straight into it. Alot of this author's work is blink and you will miss something fast paced, and this story is no different. Love the combination of mythologies we get here in this story. I'm super excited to see where this goes.

I am so excited

What a great beginning to a fascinating story. There is so much mystery surrounding Marigold. She has so much spirit and strength of character. She tells it like she sees it. I am really enjoying her antics.

The demigods are all powerful men who don't take crap from anyone yet they are taking it from her. I think she confounds and frustrates them while also getting them all hot and bothered. I am excited to red more of the series.

Honestly it was pretty silly. However it kept my interest and I read it in one sitting. It’s the typical RH though...she’s super special, one of them is a big AHole to her, she makes them feel things they haven’t felt in forever, blah blah blah. I’ll probably read the next one because why not.

I ended up loving this book. I'll admit, the first few chapters were a rough introduction. I was bored, thought it was cliche, and then the situation pissed me off.

But then, the humor started flowing and I dug the main character and the storyline.

Later, I started falling for some of the guys, who come across as class-A, massive douchebags at first. I figured there was no way in hell that would change, but the author surprised me. There is an exception with one of the brothers, he's still on my bad side by this point. What ended up starting as a grim, frustrating, angering, violent book turned into a funny, dare I say heartwarming change of a book. With action and plot and all that jazz. Really.

I do have a gripe that it's too short. On the plus side, there's one more of the series already out, which I read immediately after, and more books are coming --- but sadly they are not all here yet so I'm frustrated. May check out some more series from the author.

Mixed feelings

This one is difficult to rate. On one hand I really didn't like Marigold and I got pretty fed up with the demigods treatment of her. On the other hand, I liked the plot and I gobbled the book up in one sitting. Marigold is very hard to like. She's such a brat. She doesn't ask question or try to make friends. She throws temper tantrums and expects to get her way. When that doesn't work she rages about how unfair life is. I kept reading mostly for the sexy scenes which were really pretty hot. I need to see more Hector and Axel. Paxton can jump off a cliff. I do plan to read the next book but I really hope Marigold grows up and Paxton does something epic to redeem himself.

WARNING. What starts as a somewhat promising female lead turns out to be a whiney, sniffling, immature anti-heroine. She whines about walking on cobblestones in bare feet. Whines to her boyfriend about the meany-face who beat her up. She throws temper tantrums left and right, and not in a good kind of way. She is VASTLY immature, doesn't know how to take the high road, and doesn't use any braincells. The first few chapters led me to believe that she would be strong, kick-ass, compassionate, and mature. This is very misleading. The second book only goes further down the spiral into spineless, grating dialogue.

Wow i really enjoyed this. I read some reviews before i started. To me the characters were great. Not too sure on the Demi god of the Sea. Sometimes he seems like he dislikes Marigold at other times it seems like he is just trying to bring the best out of her. Hector is a nice touch. It'll be interssting to see what Marigold is and her place in the world.

This was the worst book I have ever read. I read a lot. I thought I had read a bad book before. I was wrong. Turned out I didn’t know what bad was. In fact, I knew it was the worst book I’ve ever read by page 3. I continued reading the book because I couldn’t believe a book could be this bad. It was sort of fun.

How does this book have a 4 star rating? You people are crazy.

OMG! This is going to be an amazing ride. Marigold is everything lovely. She is loyal, confident, caring, strong, fierce, capable, and mouthy. What's not to love about any of that? Her (future) men are all over the place in looks and personality, and I'm wondering how the dynamic between all of them is going to work out. The first guy we meet is Axel, the son of the God of War. He is a little bit sneaky and underhanded in the way he deals with Marigold in the beginning, but it's easy for me to see the attraction. Marigold seems to have a sneaky streak of her own so I look forward to the interchanges between these two. We meet the next two guys at the same time. There is the son of the God of Sky, Zak, and the son of the God of the Sea, Paxton. Just like Axel, they both try to dominate Marigold a little bit, but they can't get the upper hand over her. The first interactions between the four of them were fun and exciting. And can I just say, Cookies! Oh, I really hope this is a thing. The last man we meet is the son of the God of Death, Hector. He is my favorite so far because I think he is the only one who has been upfront with her. He might be the neediest one when it comes to love, too.
This is a super fun, exciting beginning to a series I'm really looking forward to diving into. I can't wait to see what dangers Marigold will face, the way she will put the men in their place, and the friends she will make along the way. She is already strong and full of courage, even if it's faked sometimes, and I'm anxious to see where this journey will take her.
I know it's a RH romance, and the romance is there, but Meg's storytelling is the thing that brings me back to her stories over and over again. The steamy romance is like the icing on the cake. I enjoy it, but the story stands on it's own without it; amazing characters, beautiful new worlds, daring adventure, and just enough giggles. The smile never leaves my face while I'm indulging in one of her books and this one is no different.

This was pretty good, but not my favourite.

I feel like the plot is going to be good, but so far, the characters aren’t holding too much of my attention.

Pigston… um I mean Paxton, was a grade A douchebag! Im not a fan of bully romance, because hello? Why does my man need to treat me like shit before he loves me?! And worse part is that he KNOWS that she’s his mate already… wtf? No thanks, yall can keep his dusty ass ✋🏼

Zak was kinda boring, but we also didn’t get too see much of him, so I’m reserving my judgement for a later date

Axel was kind of a vibe lol he was an asshole from the beginning, but I kinda liked it 😅 at least he wasn’t cruel

Héctor seems like a sweetheart, but we really didn’t get much of him.

Marigold is a bit of a loose cannon, but I kinda like her! Girl does not take 💩 from anyone and won’t bow down to anyone, and I’m here for it!

Overall, the story was a little too short and I would have liked to get to know the characters more in the first book, but it was good enough to want me to continue. Fingers crossed that it gets better 🤞🏼

Side note: Cookie and Lamb?! wtf kind of nicknames are those?! I almost threw up hearing them! 😬

Tropes:
Magical Academy
Gods/Demigods/Mythology
Urban fantasy
Why choose
Fated mates
Bully romance (only with 1 douchecanoe)
Secret identity/power

Honestly expected it to be better. The writing style was a bit childlike and too sugary for my taste, despite rated-R content being in the book. But i will say I see the potential for this another to grow in future books. I unfortunately will not keep reading this series but it wasn’t a bad read. You can definitely get through it and the plot and overall story itself isn’t bad at all.

Holy Demigod! <3

I did not put this book down at all. I seriously devoured this awesome story in one sitting. I loved Marigold so much. She wouldn't let anyone keep her down and even when she didn't have control of what was going on around her, she took control! I seriously can't wait for the next book, I'm in love!

Why, why WHY in the world did I even try push past the first chapter. The prologue wasn't that bad. I kind of liked Axel (No offense but this is literally the last name I would chose for a demigod with ties to Ancient Greece) and even though I could already tell that Marigold was going to be a special snowflake, I was willing to give her the benefit of the doubt. Then came chapter 1...

Apart from the fact that I HATE it when a prologue happens after the story's already started, I was constantly bombarded by how 'Sooper spesal' Marigold is. She's the leader of her team. Though she's the only 'human' in her group, she's the only one who has enough mojo to resist a demon and is thick headed enough to believe the load of bullshit she feeds herself as to why she couldn't possibly be supernatural when a whole bunch of facts are staring her dumbass in the face.

She's the one who kills an evil alpha with one shot and a witty one liner. She's the one who manages to land a blow to a trained PROFESSIONAL fighter with a witty one liner. Of course she's the only one who can resist the super badass alpha demigod dude with -you guessed it- a witty one liner.

Everyone tried so hard to be funny in this book. Instead they all sounded like a bunch of adolescent boys in a dissing war. I wouldn't've blinked an eye if someone slipped in a 'your mom' joke somewhere. That's how bad it was. Even with the immature jokes and cliched bitchy blonde bimbo enemy who couldn't pour water out of a boot with instructions on the heel, I still got the distinct feeling that this author hasn't had much interaction with teenagers in many years.

She kept on going on about how naive Celia (I think that's her name) was and how amazingly mature she was but even the idiots in my class know how to keep their mouths shut. Oh, wait. That's right, I forgot. Axel barely blinked at her and had to resist pissing on her to mark his territory so she can get away with being a low key bitch to every one and unnecessary comments disguised as an attempt at humor.

My problem with this book was that when I say I want a strong female character, I want someone smart, independent and with their head screwed on in the right direction. Not what ever *this* was.

Let me just say the story overall is good. Now on to my rant.

MC started off as a strong kick ass character that didn't take any BS. But her fighting scene showed that her pride is worth more to her than her life.

Even when her friends begged her to surrender during an unfair fighting match, Marigold just kept on going further traumatizing them. Face beaten up, Bloody, with broken bones she probably looked half dead.

Paxton is a shitty character for setting up the unfair match just to teach her a lesson. For respect? He never gave her any. To see her full potential? Could of been done differently.

Monologue were sometimes strange and the pet names are just so bad. Cookie? Lamb?
