Great children's introduction to coal mining the old fashion way. A young boy is the main character, starting his first day of work in a coal mine.

Another interesting read in the On My Own History series. We prefer the ones about real people. This title was about real situations but fictional people.

My six year old said it was interesting but also kind of boring. 🤷‍♀️😂 Honestly, this wasn't one of the more interesting titles of the series.

We learned what life was like in the early days of mining towns. This story followed a young boy on his first day working at the mines.

1885, Pennsylvania. Working in the coal mine is dirty and dangerous. Despite his mother's wish that he continue school, 8 year old Andrew's family need the money he can earn sorting coal in the breaker. When there is a mine accident, Andrew is scared. Did his father make it out?

Happy ending. Great illustrations.
