Short applicable snippets from dedicated saints who suffered through illness, bad temper, lack of support, loneliness and a host of other maladies ...but who realized that God may not remove the issue. He wants to see His face reflected in the refined gold of our characters, and He increases stress & pressure in stages so as not to destroy. In my flesh, I still wish that He would not “display confidence” in anyone I knew by repeating lessons in endurance, but it’s encouraging to know how much is risked, puzzled over, agonized over, and then laid gently to rest in the hearts & minds of believers - with or without an earthly explanation.

I loved this book. It was short and sweet and full of richness. I honestly wish I had more of their writings to read because I finished feeling so inspired and encouraged by their lives. My one complaint is that some of the writing is an older style and sometimes wordy to the point where I had to read over it a couple times to grasp what was being said. But overall, as a short read this is a great little book to carry around and refer back to.

This book found me at the bottom of a dusty stack in an old used bookshop. It told the story of two of my favourite people (Amy and Lewis), as well as two more I was pretty familiar with, esp Spurgeon. However, it gave me insight into them from a less-known vantage point. These insights were invasive, deep into the privacy of their personal lives (and struggles). But don't think of it as a shaming tell-all or a tabloid, no, this book is meant to instruct and aid. It's educational, and so very helpful.

September 2, 2018unfinished at this time. Found it a bit difficult to read due to archaic language. Would really like to read more about Amy Carmichael though.
