Even in your hometown, you can feel like an outsider …

In the close-knit community of Carrenporth in Cornwall everyone knows everyone else’s business. Luke Carrack is only too aware of this. He’s been away for two years but nothing has changed – from the town gossips who can’t see past the scandal of his childhood, to the cold way he is treated by some of his so-called fa

A Cornish Affair by Jo Lambert is a 2019 Ruby Fiction publication.

A unique combination of mystery and romance-

Cat and Luke DO NOT have a ‘meet-cute’ experience. From there, every encounter solidified their feelings. But, after pitching in together to help an acquaintance, they forge an unexpected bond.

However, despite the building chemistry, Luke’s history leads him to believe Cat’s family would never accept him. In the meantime, both Cat and Luke will discover secrets and revelations from the

4☆ Romance, Intrigue and Mystery makes for a Compelling Read!

A Cornish Affair was a delight to read.
It was so much more than a compelling romance, it was also a cleverly plotted mystery which made for a compulsive read.

When Cat meets Luke there isn't an instant spark between them.
Cat has no interest in Luke and vice versa.
But as the two become involved their friendship blossoms as does their chemistry. If only they both could let their guard down and learn to open up and trust.

Luke has a bit of
Luke and Cat’s relationship is initially characterised by mutual dislike and misunderstanding but gradually changes into something different. Hey, if it was good enough for Jane Austen in Pride and Prejudice…. The reader follows the highs and lows, the ups and downs of their relationship. I liked the back story the author created for Luke which made him an engaging character the reader (well, this one at least) was always rooting for.

The small village of Carrenporth is picture postcard Cornwall

This book is so amazing with his combine contents of a little bit of everything - romance, drama, dark family secrets and plenty of twists and turns throughout which made it such an entrancing to read that I loved so much. This is a wonderfully romantic tale of two potentially stars, with enough twists and turns to keep you thoroughly entertained. I loved the characters of Luke and the local hotelier’s daughter Cat, and just throw in some secrets and crimes set against a Cornwall background.

This was an absolute treasure. I thought it would be a love story pure and simple, but the author regaled us some suspense as well.

You were under the impression that you had it all but afterwards another lovely love story is revealed.

I am a huge fan of a mixture of friendship, love, intrigues, suspense, sadness and
of course what is a cake with the icing : the happy ending?

It was a very fluently written book and I could not put it away. I want to know what happens next, so I sincerely hope the au

What a lovely read – and perhaps my favourite yet of the author’s books. There’s been something of a proliferation of books set in Cornish hotels recently, and I was a little afraid this book might turn out to be just one more – but it most certainly isn’t. The sense of place is excellent, the hotel and its Cornish beach backdrop vividly drawn, but the book’s real strength is perhaps in its well-developed characters and the original twists and turns of the plot.

Sometimes everyone in a small, close-knit community may think they know everyone else's business but sometimes they get it totally wrong! This is a story where assumptions of guilt have been made and never really questioned. It involves many who really should have known better, including so-called family and friends. However, there are more surprise developments in this drama packed story, which even includes dark, family secrets and plenty of twists and turns! This is not a sweet romance. It is ...more

I've spent an enjoyable couple of afternoons in the beautiful Cornish town of Carrenporth, getting to know Cat Trevelyan, whose family owns one of the local hotels, and the blissfully handsome, Luke Carrack, whose return to the town, after an absence, is causing something of a consternation amongst the ladies.

Throughout A Cornish Affair there's a real sense of community, and the little Cornish town comes alive with all of its quirky characters. I especially enjoyed getting to know Cat and her fa

There seems to have been a lot of books set in Cornwall recently and it's not hard to see why. With beautiful sandy beaches, sparkling blue seas, and expanses of azure sky, it's a beautiful place. Even on a stormy day there is something wild and appealing about the Cornish coastline. And I'm sure the current obsession with Poldark has done much to enhance Cornwall's popularity too. Although the setting of this book is important, and beautifully described by the author, it is the characters and r ...more

This story of Cat and Luke is an emotional roller coaster of love, trust, and secrets. The many plot twists and one curious mystery kept my interest and moved the story along at a good pace. I liked the main characters Cat and Luke, though they were a bit dramatic and prone to overreacting. Most of the supporting characters were quite likable, with a few nasty ones who stirred up trouble and kept things interesting. With a satisfying conclusion, this was an enjoyable read that was hard to put do ...more

It’s no secret that I love this author’s writing. Her characters are compelling. I do have to admit to falling in love with her male characters. Yes, even those who are seemingly bad news. So, in The Cornish Affair, set in a family hotel with the evocative Cornish landscape as a backdrop, we have lustworthy Luke Carrack. With heartbreak and scandal in his background and turning local female heads, we just know he spells delicious trouble – cue the gossipmongers. Also, that his story is going to ...more

I found this to be a book that has a little bit of everything - romance, drama, dark family secrets and plenty of twists and turns throughout which made for such an entrancing read that I loved!

Set in Cornwall, the stunning backdrop adds to the whole scene and you're soon immersed in the lives of these characters - mainly Luke and Cat. Luke Carrack has been away for a couple of years and seems to have a bit of a reputation with rumours about him never far away, so he's happy to keep to himself a

An adorable summer read full of lovely relatable characters, the story is the kind you can curl up by the pool with or in the back garden with a nice drink. A lovely companion to a peaceful evening this book will keep you turning pages and wanting more, a great debut and looking forward to future books by Jo

This turned out to be a heady mixture of romance, mystery, family saga and a touch of murder. There are a lot of ingredients to catch your attention. First of all, there is some thoughtful characterisation- not just with the main protagonists but with the full cast. My favourites have to be the redoubtable Aunt Em and the loathsome Evie. You start to realise that there are some family secrets lurking beneath the surface, which adds to the intrigue.

I also liked the family set up at the hotel whe

I really enjoy Jo's books and this one is no exception. She has a way of making her characters jump off the page, following with anticipation as we see how Cat and Luke's relationship develops only for the rug to be pulled from under our feet as a misunderstanding causes them to separate. Cat has her own journey of self-discovery and it is only when she finds out who she is that the two can possibly think about a future together. The story is set partly in Cornwall and partly in Italy with lovel ...more

Another brilliant unputdownable story by Jo Lambert. I enjoyed following Cat & Luke’s romance and having it set in one of my favourite places too made it all the more enjoyable. Well worth the 5 stars, thank you for another great tale.

My first reaction to any book is always the cover, it’s what draws me in to purchase or turns me away with a ‘not for me’ thought. First of all, the cover for A CORNISH AFFAIR is simply beautiful but it also gives me a picture of what the ocean is truly like. It can be calm and beautiful on the surface while danger lies beneath those incredible waves. And that impression continued when I open the pages and entered Jo Lambert’s world. There is far, far more to this sto

A satisfying read which I really enjoyed. A story of romance, mystery, murder and family secrets. I loved the setting in Cornwall and then in Italy. Well written with great characters and twists and turns along the way which kept the story interesting and made me want to find out more.

I look forward to reading more from Jo Lambert.

Thank you to ChocLit for providing me with an early copy in exchange for my honest review.

A gorgeous cover for this engaging anytime read, whether at home or on holiday, summer or even winter.

When I sat down to read A Cornish Affair the wind was battering torrential rain against the windows. So it was a treat to forget about the dismal weather outside and be transported to summertime in Cornwall.

With a host of interesting and some annoying characters, the plot is set around a family run hotel in Cornwall. Aunt Emelia is everyone's idea of a dotty relation but, in this case, appeara

My favourite part of this book is the third quarter, where an event that shouldn't be mentioned to avoid spoilers gives importance to some characters who seemed more secondary before, but there were things I particularly liked in the other parts too (including the last plot twists) even if I must say it took a while for me to really get into the story, probably because the first chapters include several backstory chuncks (at least they show well-developed character backgrounds, which I appreciat ...more

The cover of this book should have been a good clue - a calm blue sea but you cannot see what is happening under the surface.
When I started reading I was expecting another jolly story set in Cornwall. I did not at first warm to the heroine, privileged, job in the family business, no real problems - why would she be interesting? However very quickly it became apparent that there was definately more to this story than saving the world by baking at the seaside. The latter can be very enjoyable, don

Why is Luke Carrack the talk of the town? What is his real story? This is a great tale of two potentially star crazed lovers, with enough twists and turns to keep you thoroughly entertained. I loved the characters of Luke and the local hotelier’s daughter Cat, and just throw in some secrets and crimes set against a Cornwall background. Thoroughly enjoyed this first novel by Jo Lambert and I highly recommend it. This is a new author to keep an eye out for!

This is a lovely romance set in Cornwall. The lead characters are poles apart in all ways, but their love ties them together. Cat and Luke have to go through a lot of things before it looks like they will be together, then they are torn apart. Following their uphill struggle you feel deeply for them. Problem follows problem and misunderstandings abound. A final sting in the tail, keeps the pages turning. A lovely long book which I thoroughly enjoyed reading.

The story follows the developing relationship between Luke Carrack and Cat Trevelyan, set against the fictional Cornish seaside town of Carrenporth. At first I thought it was just going to be a Pride and Prejudice styled romance, and I will be honest, I was a little disappointed at the prospect, and so I was delighted when it unfurled and became so much more. The story took me to completely unexpected places and I loved that I never really knew where it was going next.
