Author Catherine Ryan Hyde is one of my big reading discoveries this year. I have only read two of her bajillion books so far, but both hit the bullseye for me. I am thrilled there are so many more for me to dive into.

Stay is a thoroughly engaging story set in the summer of 1969. The plot centers around four main characters, including the deeply affecting Zoe Dinsmore, a 55-year-old recluse with tragedy in her past that has left her racked with guilt. Then there are the two 14-year-old best

Such a beautiful story! Exquisitely told, deeply moving, and thoughtfully tender. It is the summer of 1969 and 14-year-old Lucas has a lot too be concerned about. His parents are fighting nonstop, his brother is over in Vietnam, and his best friend doesn’t seem to want to leave the house. There was a lot of burden on this 14-year-old’s shoulders and so he took to running in the woods where he met Zoe and her dogs. At first Lucas would only run with the dogs and had very little interaction with ...more

This was such a touching read. I was utterly transfixed by this novel as I read it over the course of a single day.
It was gentle.
It was sweet.
It was heartbreaking.
And it was life affirming.

The majority of the novel takes place in the summer of 1969 and focuses on 14 year old Lucas Painter. Lucas is the sweetest character ever. I have never felt so maternal about a character when reading a book as I have about Lucas. He's just on life's precipice about to become a man, but still a boy...

A beautiful story written with heart and depth about 14 year old Lucas Painter’s coming of age during the summer of 1969.
While his parents fight loudly everyday, his dad coming home later and later at night, Lucas’ last letter from his brother in Vietnam has him seriously worried, thanks to it’s mostly being blacked out by censors. What was his brother trying to tell him?
Out in the woods walking one day to clear his mind, Lucas sees two dogs, they spot him and begin chasing him. He’s relieved

Beautifully written story by seasoned author Catherine Ryan Hyde. Each of her characters are engaging, my favorite being 14-year old Lucas, the central character whose life will drastically change after meeting up with two large dogs near a remote cabin in the woods.

“What I did not yet know is that I had placed the first domino in a stack of events that would literally alter the world as I’d known it.”

This selfless, perceptive and thoughtful young man completely captured my heart. He carried a

This emotional, thought-provoking read had me questioning everything at every turn. I don't know what I would have done, my thoughts were all over the place. This book reminds me that family is more than the one you are born into. The story is well paced and I loved the characters. The author really got the widening awareness that Lucas has as he grows up. The setting is so well depicted I could feel and see the dry grasses and the rains. She shows that all was not sweetness and light.

Stay is the coming of age story of a boy, Lucas Painter, in 1969. This is the point in his life where he becomes a man, even though he feels inadequate and responsible for so much more than should be on his 14-year-old shoulders. He finds peace when he begins to run one day in the woods near his house and happens upon two huge dogs by an old cabin that begin to run with him daily. The dogs, Rembrandt and Vermeer, give unconditional love and support, as is their nature.
He soon meets their owner,

Having read all of Catherine Ryan Hyde’s novel, I come to expect wonderful, well developed characters, lovable dogs, a feisty cat and frequently a horse. I just finished an ARC of Stay, and all were part of this beautiful story, except a horse.
As usual, a message is delivered in her stories and that was true here. A single choice can alter the direction of a life. In this case, that could be said of several of her interesting characters, but more so Lucas. The choices he made impacted his own

How I read this: Free ebook copy received through NetGalley

Catherine Ryan Hyde does it again – Stay is a serious, deep and very beautiful, yet realistic and down to Earth novel. This is my second book by her, and I was completely blown away by the first one, Where Is Luis Velez, so I was a little bit worried about reading another one (despite buying up ANYTHING by her that went on sale for the past half a year!) Because what if I didn't like it as much? It's hard to start reading an author at

Interesting twist on flawed families. The story contains addiction issues, views on the war, how to forgive and go forward in your life, the art of having empathy for others and above all, the importance of family and friendship.
Written from 14 year old Lucas’s perspective. His mother and father fight constantly, his older brother is fighting in the Vietnam War, his best friend seems to be contemplating suicide, he discovers a love for running as he befriends 2 dogs that belong to a women’s

14 year old Lucas has so much on his plate. Parents who fight constantly, a brother in Vietnam, a best friend who is severely depressed, not to mention navigating high school. One day, he wonders into woods he’s been forbidden to go into and there starts an unusual friendship with a recluse who has their own issues. Sometimes when we are trying to save someone else, we end up saving ourselves.

This was an emotionally complex book. So well written and honest about the time (1969) this book takes

Catherine Ryan Hyde does it again, writing an emotional, uplifting book about difficult topics. Stay touches on thoughts of suicide, the Vietnam War, family dynamics, addiction and life in a small town. The consequences of things you do in your life will follow you throughout your life, but that doesn’t have to be a bad thing. While reading the book you will wish you could personally be in the story so you could have sweet Lucas, Conner and Zoe in your life. Hopefully we all have people like ...more

Truth be told Stay is an emotional roller coaster that deals with pain like no other.
The Vietnam War is something those who served may never forget especially upon their returning to the states. For Roy it was an extremely difficult time one he'd rather not discuss openly yet one he'll never leave behind.
What happened to Roy during the war was sadly not uncommon however how he dealt with the aftermath may shock some.
With Zoe Dinsmore she was viewed in a light that

I wasnt sure about this book. I received an ARC from NetGalley but it wasnt my usual genre - mystery/thriller/psychological so I wasnt prepared for what I read. The story starts with Lucas, a fourteen year old boy, who was very confused. His home was unsettling with his parents fighting all the time and as a teenager he had loads of questions about life. And no one to talk to.

His best friend, Connor wasnt much help either - having an unstable mom and being depressed himself. The story takes you

“Stay” by Catherine Ryan Hyde

A spellbinding read of friendship, family, and the inquisitiveness of a 14 year old boy.

Lucas Painter has a great deal on his mind and carries a lot of weight on his shoulders. His brother is in Vietnam, his parents scream and yell incessantly, his best friend is living in the dark and extreme solitude of his household and is afraid to leave his mother alone. To get away from “life,” Lucas goes for walks in the woods. A place his mother never wants him to go because

Stay by Catherine Ryan Hyde.

Lucas, a fourteen year old boy, is dealing with his brother being over in Vietnam fighting, his parents constantly arguing and screaming at each other, and his best friend becoming more and more withdrawn. He’s feeling overwhelmed and saddened by everything around him.

He wanders into the woods one day, the woods his mother forbade him to go into, and comes across two very large dogs. Scared for his life he starts to run, but they don’t attack. They run along with him,

Catherine Ryan Hyde has written another wonderful, heartfelt, emotional book. I enjoyed every minute of it. This one is set in 1969 during the Vietnam War. It is told from the point of view of a fourteen year boy. lucas is struggling with his own issues, particularly his family life, but somehow manages to help his best friend, his brother, and an older woman. Of course, he has no idea how central he is to bringing these people together and helping all four of them in the process. Heavy subjects ...more

I just finished Stay, after staying up most of the night to read it. This is most probably my favorite book of 2019! It is beautifully, hauntingly written. The characters are complete and complex, and so very real. I feel like I was part of their lives. For me, Stay is a very complex coming-of-age novel. Complex because all the main characters transform their lives. The ending blew me away. It was perfect and totally unexpected. This is a book that I want to share with friends and family. I ...more

This is a thought provoking, heart felt story that I loved! Ten stars!!
Lucas is a fourteen year old young man with a heart of gold. He longs to try to help anyone and everyone, and wishes that life would be perfect for all.
The time is the late 1960’s when the Vietnam War was in full blast. The world and life in general is in turmoil.
He is troubled by his best friend Connor, who seems to be depressed. Can he help him?

Stay, by Catherine Ryan Hyde

I was privileged to read an ARC of this book, set for publication in December 2019.
Once again, Catherine Ryan Hyde delivers an excellent story with depth and honesty.
Catherine creates interesting characters and a rich supporting cast of people and animals.
Her main characters are vulnerable and kind; people with loyalty and integrity. Through these folks we witness dysfunctional relationships, unfair judgments, the pain of depression, separation, a fear of intimacy,

I have just begun to read Catherine's books. This is the third one. I love how
they are all so different, yet so good. This is the story of a couple of young
teenagers and how they get through life in the late '60s and early '70s. I love
going back to those days when I was a teen as well.
This is a really good book with some hard lessons to experience. I would
love to read this one again someday.
