Sometimes the best way to transform emotional pain is by writing about it. This book is a collection of stories and poems the author published after the traumatic loss of her career, income, status, friends, and, ultimately, personal identity. Going through it was hell but writing and sharing her thoughts and feelings about it changed the author's life in the most unexpect ...more

At night, I write in a journal.

But I don't publish mine.

When I read the blurb for this book, I mistakenly thought that it was at least partially about how to do what the title says. Instead, this is a book that contains the author’s writings as she herself was healing from what she perceived as trauma when she lost her job, and perhaps, her identity. The writing reveals her anger. Indeed, she strikes out at the world that has done her wrong. I found the writing to be a little too intense for my own liking. I understand that some of the book is from h ...more

ETA, FOLKS:

Less than an hour after I posted this review, the author sent me an email accusing me of trashing her book, kicking dogs, and being a bitter old person, then asked me to "reconsider" my review. When I refused, she began to call me and others who didn't love her book "trolls."

How imaginative.

Writing to heal the pain⭐
“Sometimes life doesnt throw you a curve ball it throws you a curve cannonball”

This book in my opinion was not meant for others to actually read. It was for the author to get out her pain and anger in words. Which is fine everyone needs to vent but not in book form unless you just want pity.
This book is depressing and maybe if your life isnt worse than her was the you might feel bad for her but my life is awful and you dont see me having a pity party on paper.
I just th

I've been following along Mateja for quite some time now. Some of the pieces of this book I had read before. Though I did not expect there to be so many more pieces that I had not read yet. Mateja her story and her writing is powerful, she herself is powerful. Sometimes it feels like the words are spit onto paper, such vigor, such vehemence. Other times her writing is thoughtful, reflective, softer. Now and then it is incredibly creative, turning what happened to her into a radically different s ...more

Recommends it for: Anyone who knows pain and loss.
I was privileged to read Mateja's book on early release. I have followed her writing career since the time of her Medium posts and the wonderful fable she wrote "The Story of the Fox and White Rabbit". This book is not an easy read. It was clear to me that she has had to endure a great deal of personal loss and has had to overcome incredible difficulty in this time of her life. This book I believe is the catharsis of years of emotional and financial pain and hardship she has lived through. I am ...more

I appreciate this author’s courageous journey in sharing her story. I also appreciate the variety of work that’s collected in this book.

I found this book's title to accurately reflect its contents in multi-faceted ways. While not specifically a "how-to" in a traditional sense, it offers reality, empowerment, and a starting block for a path forward. Yes, pain, anger, frustration, and even recollections of what it is to want to end the pain, are part of these stories. I find these not only useful, but characteristics that energize the stories, poems, and first-person accounts of pivotal life events. As Gloria Steinem has noted, "T ...more

This book has my kind of stories, the stories that I know all too well, simply because I too got into writing to numb my pain, but along the way, I learned that writing helped me embrace my pain, fears, and ultimately, it led me to a world of new possibilities. This is what this book is about, real life struggles and I love how the different stories are framed in words and styles that are not so foreign, but rather simple and conversational, it felt like someone started a conversation with "hey, ...more

It's a hard story. And that's exactly the value of the book. Personally, I'm tired of inspirational stories of success which are either extremely rare or fake. This is a true story, from a real person and real writer, through a journey which may seem unreal, but it's dramatically true, and possible for many.
Deep, direct, intense. But at the same time pleasant to read, in its form of a collection of short pieces written by a talented writer.

Mateja started to write short stories at the age of ten and later became a freelance journalist, radio personality, whistleblower, and explorer of the inner worlds. She also ran her own advertising agency for eight years. Apart from that, Mateja's life resembles a roller coaster ride full of ups and downs and some pretty wild turns. Among other things, her car was destroyed by tanks and she surviv ...more
