I swear to God, Jacob Lynch, if I ever see your arrogant, smug face again, I’ll ruin your manhood with a swift knee.

You were the glorified football captain, the heartthrob, the most popular boy in school and yet suddenly you vanish leaving all your horrid friends pointing the finger at me, circling like hungry vultures to see if I would break.

They just didn’t know that I already had. Daily. For months I cried for you. You. Broke. Me.

You taunted and tormented me for years until you finally convinced me to fall in love with you. You said, “Nothing can ever tear us apart.” And I believed you.

But you lied.

And then you left.

Without a word, without a touch, without a sound.

You. Just. Left. Right when my world fell to pieces, you lit the match and watched from afar, as what remained went up in flames.

So, if I ever do see your stupidly handsome face again, you’ll be nothing more than the boy I used to know. The boy who broke my heart and crushed my soul all in a single day.

Because Jacob Lynch… I have no more XO’s to give.

No longer yours,

Rosie.

P.S. I hate how much I still love you.

description I usually really like this author's books, but this one was just OK for me. 🙈 I could be that I am just extremely bored with books lately and feeling burnt out, but I was expecting something different from this story. 😖 Most of it (70%) takes place in the past with a bunch of bullies, rapey football players, and mean girl cheerleaders. 😪 Which I am just so over at this point. 😫 I was far more interested in the present but with so little page space given (90% before they even reconcile) to that portion of the story it ended up feeling very underdeveloped and rushed. 😔 I honestly struggled to feel any connection between Rosie and Jacob. 👎 And more than one conversation was needed before they fell right back into each other's arms. 😎 Anyway, it is what it is, and as always I am just one reviewer in a sea of many...

This one was just okay for me.

XO was kind of boring to read. I think there was just something about Jacob, Rosie, and all the secrets that unfolded for them. Plus the whole past vs. present thing was just written kind of weird for me. It wasn't really flashbacks per say because there's a lot of chapters grouped together for the past.. and then again for the present.

That being said, they were a cute couple. They also had a ton of problems. One of them, was that their parents were super shitty. More like beyond super shitty. I mean, Rosie's mom was so self-centered and kind of acted like a robot. Unless Jacob's dad was around and then I would cringe so hard at their flirty touches. Then there's her dad, who you can clearly see is suffering and she is worried about him. Yet, her mom doesn't really give a rat's ass about it. She's all like.. rub some dirt on it and grow up.

Besides her parents, there's Jacobs. My douche radar was off the charts when it came to his dad. God, I hated him so much. Then there's his own mother who was sweet as pie and didn't deserve the likes of him. When they left town for good I rooted for them.

Yet, that's not all. Oh no, a crap ton of secrets come out and I was shocked by some of them. Towards the end Rosie gets her answers and definitely tells her mom that she sucks as a human being. She also gets to be reunited with Jacob and they are both having heart eyes for one another. The overall ending was a bit weird but I'm glad everyone was happy in the end.

Ah, another review from Britt brought to you by piles of tissues, regret for not using waterproof mascara, and copious amounts of sugar because day drinking is frowned upon when you’re a mother. XO is one of the BEST ugly cry, soul deep romances I’ve read his year. I was gutted in the best way by this book.
The angst is real in this enemies to lovers meets second chance epic romance. I went from despising Jacob to absolutely loving him to wanting to kick him to loving him even more. Rosie had my heart from the start though. She may be an “art nerd” but she was no shy timid nerd. She had strength and wisdom beyond her years from the very start and continued to not only impress me but make me genuinely adore her.
Their story is one heck of an emotional roller coaster that is guaranteed to hit you in the feels (repeatedly) but every single tear is worth the beauty that is XO.

Ok when I went into this book, I thought it was a enemies to lovers troupe but sweet puppies in heaven this book is so much more. I wasn’t expecting to have my heart pulled from my chest and stomped on. I didn’t think I’d have to grab the Kleenex and walk away from the book at those heart wrenching moments. It was so much more than the title and synopsis claims it’s a story of love and redemption of loss and heartbreak of bullying and first loves.

Jacob has always had a love hate relationship with Rosie from the minute she was pushed across the street by her overbearing mother with a pie. He didn’t need her as a distraction because his ruthless uncouth dad beat into him that football was the only way in life. He tormented her in his own way and made a fool of her in school. When they are forced together for the prom committee this is where things take a turn and Jacob realizes he might just like Rosie for real and goes to great lengths to convince her she has feelings for him too. Now he’s faced with her ten years later and is forced to lay demons from the past to rest in hopes that he can finally fulfill his goal of taking care of Rosie for always.

Rosie has always been tormented by Jacob in high school and his followers. She gives as good as she gets and she just wants to finish school and leave it all behind. Always known as the nerdy art student no one will give her the time of day and she’s fine with that. When it’s announced that Jacob will not only be on the prom committee, but he will also be her main lead in a school play she is forced to confront her very real feelings for him. When a series of tragic events take place, it brings them closer together and they admit they want to tackle this life together forever, but fate has other plans. Now ten years later still nursing her very battered heart when Jacob suddenly shows up in her life and nonetheless at a friend’s wedding, she is forced to put the idea of them to rest but first she needs Jacob to come clean with secrets from the past. It will be a very trying time for Rosie and Jacob.

Sweet puppies these two were cruel to each other but I liked how he stepped up when she needed it the most. Kevin a disgusting pig and well so is Chelsea. Mean girls all over this book. This book starts in the present and takes us through the past to those pivotal moments that made Rosie and Jacob fall in love and then back to the present. It’s not fluffy it’s not a cute romance. It’s in your face it deals with some sensitive subjects so keep that in mind. His dad was scum and so was her mother. Her dad and Jacobs mom are saints and deserve a medal for putting up with that. I don’t like the way Jacob dealt with things, but he was a teenager and felt trapped. Rosie’s anger was justifiable, and I felt for her. Like I said this book hit me like a freight train and I devoured it very quickly. I was so wrapped up in their story and watching it unfold. It’s a good thing I took a day to just rest and relax and enjoy this gem. One quote I really loved in this book was Jacob saying to Rosie “I had you in reality for only a heartbeat, but for ten years you’ve been my fantasy” That one line describes this book a T.

XO is a story about young adults but also it’s a contemporary romance with adults, an amazing feat in and of itself to achieve but out of the challenge of this concept comes a brilliant story, crafted with a touch of magic- it has to be magic as you can’t put the book down!

Jacob Lynch is the arch-nemesis of Rosie Reign from freshman year onwards until he wasn’t and then he was- but worse!

XO is mainly told by Rosie in two timeframes, present day and ten years prior. Through Rosie’s eyes we understand what life was like for the lead characters when they were seventeen as well as a bit about now, as twenty-seven year olds. The background information is important and sets up the whole story.

This incredible author has the innate ability of being able to create the most vile characters... so well. There are a few in XO that were absolutely disgusting and a waste of oxygen, harsh? Yes, but this is the feeling you get reading about them from the detailed descriptions. All of the descriptions are equally as detailed and you find yourself totally immersed in the story. The anguish you experience is so real, the tears that fall are definitely real, the lump in your throat as well as the ache and tightness in your chest are real- all through the eyes and words of another who has taken you on a literary journey that she made real.

There are many humorous elements, especially the fun banter between the lead characters but this balances the serious aspects. There are quite a few deeper elements like bullying that are handled head on, I loved it. I won’t spoil anything else but be prepared because there is so much to this story... it’s a book you can reread over and over and seeing as it’s not something I do, it’s one of the highest praises I could give it.

I totally recommend this to everyone to read.

After reading Neverland, I was expecting to once again have my heart stepped on and it ripped out...and Melissa did it again BUT in a completely different way.
XO is a beautifully written second chance/bully/enemies-to-lovers romance about Rosie and Jacob. I loved every word in this book. I really felt for each of the main characters and wanted to stab some other characters too.
Melissa captured their love/hate perfectly and I guarantee, you will love XO as much as I did.

I received this book for free for an honest review.

I finished this book in one sitting and was then sad it was over. I absolutely love how this title plays into the books, such a sweet little thing.

This book gives a real roller coaster of emotions, just when you think you got the story down......you don’t.

This is my first time reading this author and I was not disappointed one bit.

This is my first read of this author. The blurb sucked me in. I was so looking forward to how this tension was going to resolve with these two. Jacob ad Rosie clearly have a history.

Sadly, 70% of this book takes place back in high school. It isn't told in flash back. The book is done in two parts--then and now. There are people who will love this story. YA is just not my cup of tea. All that teen angst just doesn't do it for me.

Now. That said. The adult portion of the book was a good read. Rosie had some issues that she needed to resolve before these two could re-connect. Their meet-cute was epic. I loved all the wedding party. I would have liked to see more of the book about how them working on putting the past behind, earning trust again and then moving forward.

The writing is well done. The genre just is not for me. Give it a shot now knowing what the story entails.

From the blurb which is what had me hooked from the very beginning to the last word at the end of the book i could not put this book down . This is the first book I've read from this author Melissa Jane and it won't be the last I'm now a fan. ! . There was so many "OH MY GOD and NOWAY moments through out this book . Jacob and Rosie were kids living in a world of high school drama family drama and life in general Rosie not fitting in Jacob the star football player . Both of their lives completely different yet the same . Secretly in love, Jacob would do anything to get Rosies attention even if it meant playing tricks on her to get her in class or out in the school hall which in turn made Rosie hate Jacob. Little did they know that their lives would be come so intertwined and that secrets they themselves didn't know would change the course of their lives irrevocably. This book had me turning page after page the characters are strong relatable caring and compassionate each one bringing something to the story that made you want to cry throw your kindle at the wall scream obsenities and want to throat punch a character or four lol once you read the book you'll know who I'm talking about 😉. . Lol because of lies and betrayal by those who are sposed to love Jacob and Rosie with all the love and protection they deserve they find themselves lost to each other for ten years. Ten long years that harvered bitterness and resentment until finally the truth is revealed and once again everything Rosie thought she new was shattered in to a million pieces just like her heart. I can not wait to buy this book in paperback i loved it so much and it will definitely be one of those books you will want to read again and again.

First off I’m a huge Melissa Jane fan and I devour all of her books. So when I saw XO I just knew that I had to read it.
Jacob and Rosie’s story is told in two parts, then and now. While the ‘then’ part takes up the majority of the book I found that I wanted just a bit more from their story. For me specific parts, eg Jacob’s football career, was glossed over and I was hoping for more detail with his father. For me I didn’t get the ‘feels’ till about the 80% mark. That’s when I found my heart rate pick up and things started to truly happen and unravel. I did love the sentiment behind the ‘XO’ meaning, this grabbed my heart.
I did enjoy this book. It touches on some very taboo but very much happening today subjects that should be more widely viewed and talked about.

Well done M.Jane on giving us an all consuming, hard to read subjects but also an enjoyable light hearted read (in parts). I loved meeting Rosie and Jacob.

Melissa Jane's books always leave me anxious, on the edge of my seat and my stomach in knots.

XO was no different but in not Melissa typical style and I honestly say I was not disappointed.

Jacob and Rosie are completely opposite in everyway, but fate has other plans when they start dating. Everything is going great until 1 night when Rosie's world comes crashing down around here.

Years later a chance encounter throws Jacob and Rosie back together.

Finally questions get answered but will it help Rosie move on.

Just be prepared to have a big ugly cry with this book. Well done Melissa

Reviewed for She's a lip biter.

Everything she writes is just so good... her books give the major feels; her characters are realistic and the story lines always original. XO was no different, told from a Then and Now perspective. Then tells the story from their beginning. Rosie and Jacob, the nerd and the high schools star football captain, neighbors and enemies… until they weren’t. Their love story wasn’t easy, high school was full of kids wanting to tear them apart, but despite their haters the two fell in love but that love came with a warning… “the boy will break your heart” and not only did he break it but he left her desolate and broken at one of the worst times of her life. Now tells us how the two meet up again years later as maid of honor and best man at their mutual friend’s wedding… and the fireworks begin again! This is an emotional story of love, hate and family. A roller coaster ride that you won’t want to get off.

Loved it! I don’t normally like books when they start in the present go back to the past and then to the present again but it worked really well with this book. I have read a few books by this author now and they have all been written well and great stories!

First let me say this is the first story of Melissa Jane I have read, and it won't be my last. I'm actually wondering how I missed her. XO is a good second chance, emotional story. The characters are likeable, and relatable. Oh my heart hurt for Rosie. So many times I thought I knew which way the story was going to play out, then out of nowhere the direction changed, and boy was I wrong. I like when I'm kept in the dark.

"I hate how much I still love you."
Utterly brilliant.
That's the only two words I can use to describe XO.

This is the first book I've read of Melissa Jane, and I can honestly say I don't know why I haven't read anything of her's sooner.
What a way to start an author off with a bang!

Torment.
Despair.
Heartache.
Agony.
Redemption.
Love.

This book had it all in spades. It starts in the present, with a twenty seven year old Rosie attending the wedding festivities of her best friend. Rosie's generally happy with her life, but something is missing. It's not until we flash back to her teen years, that we find out what - more namely, who.

Jacob lynch, football jock, with cockiness to boot, shouldn't find any interest in a nerdy art geek like Rosie Reign, but the new neighbours seem to always butt heads. He finds ways to keep tormenting her, almost like she's some kind of play toy for him. When the two are paired up for a drama production, things begin to take a turn.

Melissa Jane has a way of creating antagonists that have your skin crawling and keep your breath caught in your throat. My heart skipped a beat several times, and not in a good way. But it was a very good thing. It means I was invested in the characters, and boy was I. The way Rosie and Jacob turned from bully, to enemies, to friends, to lovers was pure literary genius. Then just as you think everything is safe, be warned, the author has a way of stabbing your heart with every painful word and making those ugly tears flood your eyes.

Rosie and Jacob have that one in a million love story. The tale that sticks with you. The one you just have to keep reading because you NEED to know what happens to them - will they work it all out?

Trust me, you must read it, because it's one of those books that will never leave your mind once you do, it is simply THAT great.

So stop reading this review and one click XO now! You won't regret it...

The enticing love/hate blurb for this story will definitely rope you in!
But as it gives you a certain feel for it's path, this author, in her signature fashion will wrench you in so many different heart breaking directions with Rosie and Jacob's epic love story, I guarantee you will be left dizzy and breathless but nevertheless blissfully satisfied.

This is, in essence, a plethora of genres; bully romance, YA, enemies-to-lovers, and it is quite exquisitely woven into a second chance romance with a painful but joyous ending.

Though we begin with these characters in present day, we are soon taken back to where it all began, and Rosie and Jacob's early years get off to a tumultuous start.

He apparently tortures her throughout their early school years together, but this feisty, arty nerd gives just as good as she gets.
And isn't that attention just emblematic of a young boy's way of showing his interest?

When these two do sort out their-what is obvious to we readers-wonderful chemistry, they are torn apart once more leaving Rosie devastated, and in it's place hatred blooms.
Fast forward 10 years, and the two are once more thrown together to confront the love they would have themselves believe they left behind.

This story has ALL the feels, so many X's and O's, I was left a blithering puddle of emotions surrounded by tissues and a restored heart at its centre.
5 X's, 5 O's and 5 stars for this epic tale of love returned!

Xo was broken up into two parts consisting of then and now. I enjoyed the way that the author structured the story like this providing information on the relationship between the two main characters. I find myself wanting to learn more details about Jacob within the story in regard to his family and his football career which was a big part of his life. But other then that small detail I found I really liked this story and the characters were perfect for each other. I loved the way that they played pranks on one another when they first met.

Rosie I absolutely loved throughout the story and I loved how she didn't let anyone put anything on her, even Jacob. I loved how she always stood up for herself.

Jacob, I really enjoyed and found that he made me swoon during some parts of the story where he was trying to help and protect Rosie.

The two characters were complete opposites but I found that this made them perfect for each other. I really loved how they got together. This stroys had a range fo emotion throughout it and I could not get enough of this story. I cant wait to read what this author releases next.

I really enjoyed the fact that there was some substance behind this book. It delved into some very touchy subjects such as abuse, alcoholism, suicide, etc. It brought to light so many that some people tend to tip toe around. Definitely a trigger warning to some.

The two main characters have a enemy to lovers type thing going on in high school. There is a big lack of communication from her family however and leaves things in a very bad spot. Now Jacob is originally portrayed as a jock who is cruel to Rosie but as the story unfolds we begin to see a very caring and nurturing side to him. There is definitely some comedy at that wedding rehearsal/retreat lol I wonder how much the bride and groom knew about what was going on. I do wish that they gave us a little bit more about them now. How does one just let 10 years go by.

The say you always hurt the ones you love the most, that sure is the case with Jacob and Rosie. Jacob was the thorn in Rosie’s side all throughout high school, he was the captain of the football team and she was artsy nerdy girl and we all know opposite attract and that is the case with this pair. When Rosie thinks that he is who her future is with, Jacob up and leaves when she needs him the most and in the blink of an eye her whole world changes. Fast forward 10 years they are literally forced together again by mutual friends. I sat on the edge of my seat and my anxiety levels were at an all time high but in the end I was left with a smile on my face. Absolutely loved this book

The X & O!!! gahhhhh, so freakin sweet.

Jacob and Rosie met when they were young, when he moved across the street. He's always given her a hard time, aggravating her, picking her out, arguing with her, she's just had it with him, she's miserable. But she is starting to feel things for him. These two have been through alot, and when they finally got together, ahhhhh all the heart eyes!!! But, there are issues and he abandons her. Heartbreak, emotional, sweet story about these two who belong together and find their way back to each other years later. This was my first Melissa Jane read, this won't be my last!

A amazing enemies to lovers romance but it’s more than that. Secrets Jacob and Rosie both have one. We get a glimpse of past and present in this book. It’s heartache and angst and will make you wanna pull your hair out and scream at Jacob. I will say Rosie is one straight up strong girl. Jacob I had a hate to love relationship with him. Amazing story with forgiveness and forever. 5/5 stars

English
"XO" by Melissa Jane is a standalone book that takes place in two different moments, one as a teenager and the other years later, which is why it is also a book with second chances.

Rosie Reign was devastated after football captain Jacob Lynch left without telling her. She fell in love with him, and he left, devastated she had to grieve without knowing why. Rosie promised herself that she would never hear from him again and she would never think about him again, and with that, she forgot him. Years later, he returns to her life to turn it upside down again, realizing that she still has feelings for him.

I could have decided to put the book down on numerous occasions because I wasn't engaged. The book wasn't bad, but there wasn't that moment or that something that definitely hooked me and made me want to read more. It was a slow-burn story, and for me, these stories are exasperating because there is nothing to highlight until the last five chapters.

The book is divided into two parts, the before and 10 years after the turning point that changed Jacob and Rosie's lives. In the past, it shows the characters in their teenage years and how they got along to kill each other. It's very cliché that they are neighbors and hate each other from the first moment Jacob sets foot in the neighborhood and behaves disrespectfully towards little Rosie.

There are certain aspects of that past that I didn't like at all. Leaving aside that there are characters who do everything they can to keep Jacob and Rosie from being together, for me, the most embarrassing thing is the comments Rosie's father makes to Rosie just to imply that he is protective of his daughter. Her father will be glad that Rosie didn't lose her virginity or that she has to wait until she's 30, among other comments he has with Jacob. I don't understand her father meddling in his daughter's sex life, it's very last century.

As for 10 years later, not much to say. I did like the harsh reality that Jacob told Rosie because it was an unexpected turn of events. I could think of a thousand things about why Jacob distanced himself from Rosie, but not that one.

Definitely giving it 3 stars is the best I can do because I didn't like many aspects of it, and I didn't find it entertaining, but at least that ending deserves my approval.

Rosie Reign was the art nerd in high school who wanted to get a scholarship and get of town as fast as she could. She desperately needed a high mark in drama but when her arch enemy is cast as the male lead she feels her scholarship is slipping away.
Jacob Lynch is the high school heartthrob and has been terrorizing Rosie since his family moved in across the street from hers. Unfortunately, their parents have become friends and they are forced to socialize outside of school but it doesn’t stop the torment.
Yet slowly Rosie begins to see a different side of Jacob until he breaks her heart again and again until the day he just disappears.
Now 10 years later they find themselves in the same wedding party and secrets are bound to come out if only they can stop fighting long enough.
This book was incredible on so many different levels!
Initially I wasn’t too sure where the book was headed as it was all about the past and how much the two hated each other and pulled pranks on one another through high school. Yet we also saw a different side of Jacob come out at certain times when Rosie really needed someone.
I thought Rosie was a great character and I loved that she wasn’t the typical “bombshell” character. She hated football and strived on the arts and was barely passing her math and science classes. I loved her relationship with her dad and I hated that her mom seemed so absent and then would try and “mother” her whenever she was around.
Jacob’s relationship with his mom was good but his relationship with his dad was definitely worrisome and I wondered what would happen if Jacob didn’t live up to what he wanted. At times Jacob was a complete jerk and at other times he was a knight in shining armour.
The incidents with Kevin were heartbreaking and I was shocked at Jacob’s reactions to them. I was glad he believed in Rosie although I hated what ended up happening to him due to the fight he got into.
Towards the end of the book I knew something was up with Jacob and I was shocked at where Rosie was left. I knew something had to have happened and I was so mad that Jacob wasn’t there for her when she needed him the most.
The reunion was definitely explosive in the beginning and I thought that Rosie had every right to be really mad at Jacob after everything she had been through and how he left her. I was totally shocked at everything Jacob revealed and my heart just shattered for Rosie. I also felt so bad for Jacob though having to deal with all of that. I was so mad at the other characters involved in it!
I was so happy at the end that they were able to get through it all and realize that they both still loved each other and could get through it all with each other!

Lately I find myself really resenting men in my books, as they all pull the same crap, so I end up hating, but what's different, is that I'm not forgiving them at all anymore. In XO, Jacob is the popular football player, while Rosie is portrayed as the art nerd, and they've hated each other since Jacob moved by her. See, Jacob becomes secretly in love with Rosie, so he does all kinds of mean things to her in order to get her attention, and I wasn't impressed with him. His little act made Rosie's life hell, since his goon squad made up of the popular kids got in on the crap, and Rosie seriously hates him, and I did too. Plus there were secondaries which were his friends that seriously needed to be run over. Now, he finally gets Rosie involved with him, but then after she falls in love with him, he leaves her for whatever reason, breaking her heart into tiny pieces. Not to mention, the bullying hits next level as his friends were pissed at her, so again, hated Jacob badly. But guess what?! Ten years later, Jacob comes back to make Rosie his again, since he never got over her, but Rosie hated him so badly, crap hit the fan, and again, I don't blame Rosie at all! This is where I get so pissy about these boys, because they break the heroines hearts, then come back many years later to get them back. Every one of them should not get a second chance, because 10 years is too many years to wait, so I wish that one day, I would read a book where the heroine just flips the selfish hero off & moves on with someone else. Yeah, I know, there are secrets which don't make friends, and they'll be revealed, but it's not a good enough excuse when 10 years has passed PERIOD. And not giving me more of the present, instead of the past, well, Jacob never stood a chance with me at all. I needed more for an ending, but with the past taking up probably 70% of the book, it makes it too rushed to me. I will say this, Melissa Jane's talented writing style is addictive, so despite all of my cranky feelings, I still didn't put the book down because I needed to know if Jacob would ever earn forgiveness from me (he didn't). There are a TON of people who loved it this way, so don't take my opinion as fact, just one click XO to decide for yourselves. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
