A LONGER FALL by Charlaine Harris is the second book in the new Gunnie Rose series. This series spans several genres including urban fantasy, western, alternate history, and thriller with magic adding another level.

The story begins with our protagonist Lizbeth Rose (Gunnie Rose) on a train heading from Texoma to the country of Dixie with a new gunnie crew guarding a crate they need to deliver in Sally, a town in Dixie. By the end of the first chapter there has been an explosion and t

After the first book in this trilogy, I didn't expect very much. But I am so totally hooked on anything Charlaine writes that I just felt that I had to read this!

I tend not to like westerns and the first book was a total oater! This book mixes things up a little by getting Lizbeth (Gunnie Rose) into a different country -Dixie -on a new job. And everything is going as expected (blood and gunfire everywhere) until the train she and her new crew are on, blew up. Gunnie and her (mostly)

An awesome sequel The action is frantic and nearly non stop the sex is again there but not excessively graphic. The characters and locations are well fleshed out. I really like alternate histories. Not similar but in the vein of Orson Scott Card's Alvin Maker series especially how magic is an accepted part of life. The author, at least to my mind's ear, nails the dialog of the time and the people of different social and economic levels.
We're back with Lizbeth 'Gunnie' Rose and her love, th

I loved it and I'm sad it is over. Even better than the first one.

What I like most about Charlaine Harris's books is the entertainment value. She can make me totally forget my daily monotonous bus commute when I open one of her books. I read almost all of the Sookie Stackhouse series and I think Gunnie Rose is a down to earth hero, just like Sookie was. She is a good and loyal friend, but is also a fierce and lethal enemy to those who cross her and the ones she cares about. I like reading her thoughts and following around this realistic protagonist with a touc ...more

Gunnie Rosie is back in business with a new crew. They are hired to bring a chest to a state that is known to be very backwards, male dominated and racist.
After the train they are on crashes, the chest disappears, but she meets an old friend who helps her finding it again.

What starts with action and, of course, lots of dead people, ends more in the romance compartment. And all together the story did, unfortunately, not make much sense to me.

I admire Charlaine Harris' wri

I enjoyed this book more than the first one. I definitely recommend that you read the first book before this one. There are a lot of interactions with Eli that don't make sense without the background. I didn't think there was as much action as the first book but this one didn't really need more action. It's well-paced. I do wonder why the grigoris are still coming after Eli after he completed his mission though. I guess that's for the next book. #AlongerFall #NetGalley

Second in the Gunnie Rose urban fantasy series set in an alternative history and revolving around Lizbeth Rose and set in a very different, gunslinger-oriented not-US.

This eARC was sent to me by NetGalley and Saga Press for an honest review.

My Take
I do like Lizbeth. She doesn't tolerate spousal abuse, and she has the chutzpah to stand up to abusers. Ahem. This girl just ain't gonna fit in with what a "proper woman" is in Sally. Nope. Harris plays this up with Liz's matter-of-f/>My

Work has been crazy, and I've been hoping to find a fun, light weight bit of escapism to relax with in the evening. I was excited to see "A Longer Fall" offered on NetGalley for preview since I enjoyed Charlaine Harris' Sookie Stackhouse books.

There are a number of similarities between our protagonist Lizbeth and Sookie: both are young, pretty, clever, from less advantaged backgrounds with strong female figures, inclined to be a bit cynical about men. These characters are both judgmental with a

Electronic ARC provided by NetGalley.

I had a tough time deciding whether to give this three or four stars. I really enjoyed reading it and the world and characters are great, but I also had some issues with the way a couple of plot things were handled, and parts of ending didn't work for me.

"The Long Fall" (or "A Longer Fall", there seems to be some confusion over the title) picks up sometime after the first book. Lizbeth has joined a new crew and is on a job protecting unknown cargo on a jour

Thank you Netgalley for providing me with this ARC for my honest opinion.

Lizbeth Rose has gotten herself hired on to a new gunnie crew and are on a job. They are close to their final destination when their train explodes leaving some of them dead and the others venerable and exposed. Lizbeth for the sake as her reputation as a gunnie is determined to reclaim the cargo they were intended to deliver and just when things couldn't get any more complicated Eli shows up. He swears he doesn

The Gunnie Rose series is a wonderful look at what the world could become if some key points in history drastically changed. A post-apocalyptic or alternative history past that has turned the present into a place to survive with pockets of society banding together.

The U.S. is now divided into regions that are extremely different and have many pitfalls when crossing from one to another. Lizbeth Rose is a hired gun, normally hired to various protection crews when people or cargo need to be transp

I love alternate history tales! In the second “chapter” of Charlaine Harris’s trilogy, Gunie Rose has a new challenge in her life. This time, she has to insert herself into what used to be the culture of Dixie in the former U.S. Punctuated with pulsating tension, it’s a race against the clock as she seeks to retrieve a crate that was stolen during what can only be described as a slaughter. That crate holds the key to overthrowing the current tyrannical leadership, but time is running out. It’s a ...more

This is the second book in the Gunnie Rose series. Unfortunately, I had not read the first book and was a bit lost at first. I loved the relationship with Lizbeth and Eli. I didn’t find the humor, like I often found in the Sookie Stackhouse books. This series is not playful like I have enjoyed in previous books from this author but is more insightful and thought provoking. I’m going to have to go back and read the first book to catch up! I’ve always been a fan of Charlaine Harris’ fiction, starting with her Aurora Teagarden librarian stories. Harris has the capacity to surprise and entertain, traits that are not always together in storytelling. A Longer Fall (the second in a series of Gunnie Rose, of which I have not yet read any other), did not disappoint. A terrific mix of fantasy and strong female leads quirky characters, and small towns. Harris does not flinch from strong storytelling. Recommended to all fans of mystery and

Gunnie Rose has taken a job that is not what it seems and when it all goes bad Eli returns to be a part of the solution. This is great world building and the world is filled with interesting characters. As the characters drive the plot Gunnie faces more trouble and danger. I love how she and Eli work together. Of course as all seems to be settled the last actions leave a lot open ended. Great action and tension.

Not since Sookie Stackhouse has Harris written such a kickass heroine as Gunnie Rose. In this second book in the series Lizbeth is hired onto a crew to transport a crate to Dixie. While it should be a simple delivery, the contents of the crate draw numerous people to try to steal it, making the protection job a long string of attacks and shoot outs. I love this new series and the character of Lizbeth.

I loved it! This is one of my favorite authors. The story grips you from the start. I was just as entranced by the style of speech as I was by the recognizable yet strange world they live in. Lizbeth's job as a gunnie seems ruthless but she conducts herself with integrity and fine principles. If at times her honor starts to waver she talks herself through it and does what needs doing. Among her family and friends too. This series has me hooked! ARC netgalley.com
