This is a good introduction to the Great War from the French perspective. This series of books in Découvertes are set up the same way and do give an overall look both in text, iconography, with a start up bibliography to go further and a whole section with documents and testimony on the subject. Here the examples of the 'journal des tranchées' from all over the holes from Verdun to the Somme are priceless glimpses into history by the people who lived it.
