Street Magic by Taylor S. Seese is a fictional story that tells the story of two young adults as at first they find themselves competing street artists, but as they get to know each other a day at a time, a friendship first blooms and then with time…a romance. But this isn’t an insta-love. The author takes readers through the characters past a bit at a time, and explores the characters themselves.

Street Magic by Taylor S. Seese is the first book that I have read by this author and I have to admit that I was fascinated by the characters. At first, when I started reading this book I thought that Flynn Newman, the main character of this story, was in his younger 20s. Imagine my surprise when I learn that he is nearly 30 years old. He’s been a street artist/magician/illusionist for over 10 years since he ran away from home. As the author tells me about Flynn piece by piece and peels back the layers of his character I can’t help but be both surprised and at times annoyed with him.
Flynn is a solitary individual. He lives in an attic and his daily companions are the pigeons that he uses in his acts. I will admit that I was amused at his reaction when Harper makes an appearance and entices the tourists to come view her acts. At first Flynn is arrogant. I’m honestly not surprised by this attitude. The author points out that others have attempted to establish a niche there and failed when going up against him, so he thinks she will be just as short lived. I couldn’t help but smirk when she proves her worth. Harper is an interesting character. She doesn’t talk since she’s a mime. The author plays the story well but having her never speak even when she’s not performing. At first I thought that this was a bit strange, but the author comes along in the right timing and gives me the perfect explanation for this. The author does a good job giving me just enough in the right place and time to continue reading this story.
The only things that I don’t like about this story are the pieces that I get about Flynn and his past choices. I’m honestly mostly puzzled that he’s been so obstinate…some would say “dedicated” to his craft to stick with it for over 10 years when it pays so poorly. I thought that at some point he’d have tried to get a job, but from the tone the author uses with Flynn, he makes it sound like an inconvenience. Almost like he feels like he’s bending down “to the Man” or something. Add in the little revelation that Flynn didn’t just run off with nothing…it makes me question his overall maturity. The book is good overall, but I do feel that certain parts of it could have been cut out as it makes the book feel like it’s dragging on without adding much to it that would appeal to readers.
Overall, I am rating this book 4 out of 5 stars. The storyline is good, but I feel that it slows down too much in places. Also, I didn’t like Flynn’s immaturity – attitude and how he so easily got distracted. I understand that the author is working to prove a point to readers, but I felt that Flynn should have developed some sense by this point in this life. I appreciate how the characters do eventually develop and how their relationship grows a piece at a time. The awkward moments really make them seem all the more real as well as the conflict they each experience in their own ways. If you like romance novels with a bit more depth of character, and a storyline and relationship that actually builds a bit at a time then this is a good book to pick up.

I didn't really know what to expect from Street Magic, but I have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed the amount of time the author spent on the two main characters Flynn and Harper. Flynn is extremely immature for his age and is very much in his own little world. It takes a girl who doesn't speak to start to get him out of his shell. I really enjoyed the character Harper. I looked forward to reading this book when I saw the premise. Unforr, this one didn't deliver. It felt like I was plowing through struggling to get to the end. I couldn't make it because I found it dull with no real action. This one night appeal to die hard magic fans because the idea is good. It just doesn't deliver.
