Tucson Underworld #1

Bloodsucking Lawyer

Rate this book
Emma left her career in corporate law to pursue her passion for criminal defense, but she can’t seem to catch a break. So when she lands an interview at a small law firm, she’s more than thrilled. But she has no idea what she’s in for.

Turns out it’s not just any law firm, and Henry—her new boss—isn’t exactly, well...human.

Apparently he drinks blood instead of coffee, and his client list consists of creatures that go bump in the night. But, the way Emma sees it, if she can get through law school, she can handle a few pothead werewolves and shoplifting witches. So she stays.

There’s just one thing she didn’t count on, and that’s catching feelings for her new vampire boss. Henry and his fangs become a temptation too hard to ignore, and no matter how hard she tries, she still falls for him.

Problem is, everyone knows office romances have the tendency to crash and burn. But when your boss is a bloodsucking lawyer, odds are it’s a disaster waiting to happen.

description The entire reason I signed up for an ARC of this book was because it sounded fun. A vampire lawyer who defends supernatural creatures? I mean...already I was in love with the premise. So did the book live up to my expectations? Mostly. The writing was great. I am confused on whether this is the author's debut book or not. At the end on my ARC copy it implies it is, but she has other books listed under her name here on Goodreads. So it is confusing. Maybe they meant it was her debut in the paranormal genre. *shrug*

description

So as I said, it was well written. The pace was where I had most of my issues. It is a relatively long book, and I felt maybe a little TOO long. It moved a little too slow for me. Peculiarly in the romance department (75% before we get a sex scene). However, I still found myself engaged, and I never felt the need to skim. The plot itself was original. Humorous. Sweet. This book (IMO) was a set up book for the rest of the series. Especially with introducing so many fantastic and intriguing secondary characters. Werewolves. Vampires. Witches. Fairies. Ghosts. Wizards. There was no OW or OM drama, and the sex scenes were suitably hot.

description

Both the main characters were likable (mostly). I'll admit I didn't love Emma (not a virgin...thankfully) for a little at the start. The whole "rice incident" I thought was rude and mean spirited. However, she quickly grew on me and I ended up liking her a lot. Henry was a super sweet hero. He wasn't a manwhore (celibate for five years...yay) which was great. I'm exhausted by manwhores at this point. That said, Henry was also a BETA hero. At least he felt that way to "ME". I like my heroes to be a little more alpha and dominate. But like I said, he was a super sweet guy, and I liked him a lot.

Last, this one ends on a bit of a cliffhanger with the couple happy for now. I can only assume that this couple's story will continue in the next book, and this reader is excited to see where this story is heading.

This was a pretty good read. Henry is a lawyer to supernaturals. They couldn't be caught and risk be found out as the world didn't have knowledge of them. Emma also was a lawyer looking for a position. Henry and Emma met by accident one day with the hopes she might get a job Henry is not about hiring her. When Emma learns that not everything is as it seems she is not sure. As these two get close things start to happen. I liked both of these characters. This was my first time reading this author. This book was well written with no errors in grammar or spelling. I am looking forward to reading the next book in this series.

Well the title alone had me smiling because it’s abundantly clear this author has a sense of humour. This is the first in a paranormal romance series set in Tucson of all places so straight away it is clear that with all that abundant sunshine the Vampire Lawyer Henry is going to have problems and it doesn’t disappoint because oh yes poor Henry definitely has issues with the sun. That would be enough to keep any Vampire indoors but he’s actually got his work cut out defending the local Supernaturals that get caught breaking the law so what he really needs is an assistant.
Emma doesn’t believe in the paranormal in spite of her family occasionally saying the oddest things ! She’s not a do gooder by any means but she did go into law because she wanted to do good , oh and the tv shows and sharp suits all clearly influenced her ! Emma needs a job and one just seems to land in her lap but her boss and his clients are anything but ordinary.
This was easy to read and actually rather fun. This couple actually didn’t quite fit into the usual mould for paranormal romances but I rather enjoyed that they felt different to other Alpha male stereotypes matched with stubborn, kick ass females. From the cover it’s easy to tell this author is aiming at writing a steamy romance so nothing new there perhaps but I did enjoy this although at times the pace was slow but as a first in series it clearly is setting things up . I actually had thought I’m rather bored of office romances but this story about this oddly mismatched couple made me smile so yes I’m very glad I got the opportunity to read it.
This voluntary take is of an advanced copy and my thoughts and comments are honest and I believe fair

I thought Bloodsucking Lawyer was a interesting twist to a paranormal genre and I really liked it . This would be the first book that I've read by Nadia Diament and I really see more of her books in my kindle in the future . The characters drew me into the story I felt a strong connection to them and the way the story flowed perfectly it wasn't to fast our slow it was just right . Henry and Emma are so different they really knew how to get under one anothers skin but also meshed really well at times . I so can't wait to read more books in the Tucson underworld series and more by the author .

OMG what a great leap into the wacky world of Tuscon dwelling vampires. Can you think of a harsher environment for the UV impaired???

Henry is very much NOT a people person...er vampire. He is slowly drowning now that his criminal defence practice is overtaking his commercial/paper based work. What he needs is an associate. He pretty much lucks into meeting Emma. She left the soul-sucking world of Corporate law and wants to spend more time with her older sister. She needs a job but will she be able to put up with what she sees as Henry's...eccentricities and those of his slightly wacky clients? Will she cope when she learns they are all paranormal in some form. She is the token mortal!

Emma and Henry really made me think of the old Hepburn and Tracy movies. She is the spirited human lawyer and he the handsome, mysterious, vampire. The dialogue between them is very sparky and I loved the way Emma not only unravels when she learns that things do go bump in the night but also gets her revenge for being kept in the dark! Families really do have some big secrets.

Henry is the perfect mix of handsome lead and affable curmudgeon. I really enjoyed learning all that he had accomplished in his long life and also what he couldn't do. He is not omnipotent and all-powerful.

As the lines blurred between their professional and personal relationships I found myself really rooting for them. They were always going to get in the way of their own HEA! I really want to see more of Grant and a certain tattooed fairy sister! I can't wait to see how the series develops.
Problem is, everyone knows office romances have the tendency to crash and burn. But when your boss is a bloodsucking lawyer, odds are it’s a disaster waiting to happen.

This is the first book in a new series from this author. Emma is a criminal lawyer who has just moved and is desperate to find a job. Henry is overwhelmed with work, and after meeting Emma at the court house, he hires her. This is where the entertaining shenanigans begin! Henry is not what he appears, and neither are his clients. Bring into the mix werewolves, vampires, ghosts, witches and shoplifting fairies, this is a disaster waiting to happen. How will Emma react to finding out her sexy boss is actually a vampire? This is not my normal genre of choice, but I am thrilled that I took a chance on this story. This is well written, with drama, twists, which lead to a sweet and humorous story which had me intrigued throughout. The only down side, and this is just my opinion, the story was a tad slow to take off. I look forward to reading more in this series, and recommend for all.

I adored the chemistry between this couple. The slow burn was executed perfectly and with great tension. Henry is an unconventional, complex character with a lot going on in his life, and all of these qualities help to make him utterly intriguing as a romantic hero. He's reserved initially and has denied his carnal appetites for quite some time in favor of dedication to his work, but when he lets go and surrenders to passion it is that much more satisfying to see him crumble. 5 HOT VAMPIRE LOVER stars!

This was my first read by this author. I was intrigued by the title. I love a good paranormal romance and to have a vampy lawyer as the lead in this romance had me all in to participate. Henry in all his vampy goodness is overworked and not the most personable regardless of your species. He is serious need of help with his practice taking off thanks to the Tucson Underworld. The thought of an entire para-world had me excited and the author did not disappoint on this front -werewolves, ghost, witches to name a few that will sprinkle this colorful cast. (Sidenote: The vampires are in Tuscon aka sun central. I know. I know. That was my thought too. Flame city in at any moment.) Enter the sole human that will be a part of this organization, Emma.

Emma with issues of her own wants/ needs to return to Tucson to be more present for her family and spend more time with her older sister. The fun comes in seeing how Emma will handle finding out that her new boss is not quite human and once the lines of professional and personal are blurred the reader is in for some cute romantic fun.

Emma was not the most likable heroine nor was Henry as dominant and self-assured as I would think a supernatural in his position should have been. But, these two worked somehow for each other. I think the author did a good job of setting up this new series by providing a solidly structured plot, two developed characters to introduce us to the Tucson underworld, coupled with a very interesting cast of characters. While I would have liked the pace to be a bit quicker and the story shortened by 75 pages or so, I understand that setting up this new world takes time and deserves to be delivered expertly, which this author did. I think she is off to a solid start.

The first thing to grab my attention was the title.
Blood Sucking Lawyer - like that wouldn't pique my curiosity.
Then I read the blurb and well all bets were off.
This was a humorous romance with a bit of intrigue and magic sprinkled on top.
It truly was a refreshing read with a happy ending. Well, a happy for now ending. I am looking forward to the next in series.
Henry is not your average vamp. I think 150+ years has actually mellowed him out a bit. He is not a big fan of people, mortal or supernat. He likes reading and quiet nights in with his cat. No, I am not kidding. Don't let the propriety fool you though, under all that gentlemanly demeanor lies the burning embers of a long-suppressed wealth of passion. And it seems our sexy and smart Ms. Emma is adding a bit of oxygen to those long-neglected embers.
Emma was a bit off for me in the beginning. I didnt connect with her until about a third of the way through. She is just realizing that there is more to our world than humans and that not all monsters are bad. Some of the surprises she finds as she ventures forward in the world of supes are hilarious others are a bit scarier. I did enjoy her inner snark and at times the fact she projected her thoughts (we have all had those quick fantasies) so loudly just made some situations that much more entertaining. She has balls I will give her that.
Rick - keep an eye on this handful. I really enjoyed his character and am looking forward to his story.
Overall an entertaining first in series.
No, it is nowhere close to plausible.
Yes, it is chocked full of sexy innuendos, comical situations, and steamy romance.
A perfect getaway read.

Bloodsucking Lawyer by Nadia Diament is book One in the Tucson Underworld Series. This is the story of Henry and Emma.
Henry is a vampire that defends the supernatural clients and has become really busy. Henry's 'assistant' wants him to get another person to help out. At one court appearance he happens to meet Emma who happens to be looking for a job. When Emma does him a favor for one of his clients he goes forward to hire her. But they both are attracted to each other which makes it hard to stay all business until they can't. Emma's sister is a fairy but Emma herself was unaware of such things exciting. This book did keep reading until the end but I did feel something was off in me connecting more with the characters. But overall enjoyed their story and will look for more from Ms. Diament.

Henry’s an overworked lawyer with a laundry list of problems. 1, he’s overworked. 2, he needs help but refuses to listen to his assistant and hire someone. 3, he’s a vampire and his skin burns every time the sun touches him. What’s a vampire living in Tuscon to do?
Emma has her own issues. She left her corporate lawyer job up and moved back home to Tuscon, thinking that it would be easy for her to find another job. She’s been pounding the pavement but hasn’t had luck. Then one day at the courthouse, she runs into Henry and his client Wendell. Henry’s got a problem. He needs to run to help another client and asks Emma to sit with Wendell in the courtroom just until he gets back. Only he doesn’t make it back in time and Emma has to stand up as Wendell’s lawyer.
Henry knows that Emma’s a human, he knows that he shouldn’t have anything to do with her, but he’s desperate, and realizing that his assistant’s right, he hires Emma. Emma on the other hand, doesn’t know that supernatural creatures exist. She surely doesn’t know that her boss is a vampire and her first client is a pot smoking werewolf.
The world building for this story is awesome, from the supernats walking around Tuscon, to the coffee shop employee, everyone is a true character. You’ve got the pot smoking werewolves, to shoplifting fairies, to ghosts who need assistance as well. This is a marvelous story. My only issue was that the beginning was slow, but once it picked up, I didn’t want to put it down. I definitely recommend this story for everyone who love paranormal stories.

*I received an ARC of this story and this is my honest and voluntary review.

Bloodsucking Lawyer is an exceptional story of what could be happening in the shadows around us. There are no supernatural criminal defense attorneys in the area and Henry is slammed. He needs help yesterday. After a fortuitous meeting with Emma in court, he thinks he may have found the help he desperately needs. Emma is stressing over finding a job and agrees to meet the next day. Shenanigans, eye opening experiences, and some research blows Emma's mind and sets her on a course she never believed to be real.

Henry comes across as a stick in the mud, but he has a passionate side. Not only is he passionate about learning, he's passionate in the bedroom as well. He's been in a slump for so long. Emma pulls him out of it quickly. I admire Emma's determination to be freaked out and smart at the same time. She needs this job but she knows the risks of her being mortal. Emma's affection for her clients and the state that the entire supernatural community is in shocked me a bit, but left me liking her that much more. She's smart, sassy, and hilarious. Exactly what Henry needs.

Loved the writing and the characters. Each of the unique in their own ways. I enjoyed Bloodsucking Lawyer and hope we get more from this community and from Emma and Henry.

Such a sweet and cute twist on your average office romance! I really enjoy office romances, especially when they involve lawyers, but it's even better when the office hottie is a vampire! Emma and Henry's story is sweet with a dash of supernatural.

Emma is a mortal living a normal life with no clue about the supernatural world surrounding her. She's looking to get into Criminal Law and finds herself at the right place and time when she runs into Henry. Henry is probably the most laid back, chill and boring vampire I've ever read. His hidden life, as well as his law practice quickly changes once Emma starts working for him. Secrets are uncovered, werewolves getting into trouble and an office romance possibly brewing.

I really liked Emma's character as she's slowly discovering what the world is really like. Oddly enough, she doesn't get scared and run away! Her whole world is changed, but she manages to handle it with stride and even finds some romance! Whoever thought that the supernatural would need lawyer's!

A strong 3.75 stars. This is a sweet and adorable love story between two completely different people.
This book started out kinda slow for me, but it did pick up.
We meet a very over worked vampire lawyer Henry. He is scrambling around trying to figure out how to be at 2 places at once. He meets our beautiful intelligent Emma while he is feeling frazzled. Emma is a criminal lawyer who steps up to the task, and helps Henry out. Emma is in between positions and Henry is in need of her help. She helps Henry out by taking on all the cases he doesn't really want. As their two worlds collide the story really picks up for me.
Their working relationship starts out rocky, and I may have giggled a little bit. As the story moves on so does their relationship. We get Henry sweet, tender, and very enduring. Emma is sassy, sensual, and sexy. They compliment each other very well.

Who knew

Henry was a lawyer to supernaturals. They couldn't be caught and risk be found out, as the world didn't have knowledge of them. Emma also was a lawyer looking for a position. Henry and Emma met by accident one day with the hopes she might get a job. Henry was hesitant. When Emma leaned how much she really didn't know but she acclimated to this new reality. Things develop between Henry and Emma. One day all hell breaks loose. They both realize something has to be done. Can they make it happen and still have a relationship? I'm pretty sure there is a continuation as there are more to the series. Good read.

This is a new author to me and I will be checking out more of the work. Let’s get the negative (IMO) out of the way first it is long like really long. I guess it is setting up future books in the series but wow! And I would’ve liked it if Henry was more Alpha but is really sweet and likable and not what he appears to be. Emma leaves her job in corporate law to pursue a career in criminal law and when hires on the spot outside of the courthouse, well let’s just say chaos ensues. Will Emma be put off and quit once she learns Henry is a vampire? What about his supernatural clientele? Great start to this series, I do hope that I will be given the opportunity to read the future books in this series.

Some interesting world building and characters, but it is obviously an early work from the author as the character development was uneven. Sometimes characters came across as intelligent and capable and other times ineffective and oblivious. A plus is that major issues are dealt with and a path is made for going forward. A negative was that the lead characters spent more time on internal dialogue about the hots they have for each other than dealing with the external conflicts of the story - I prefer a little more balance.

Great read

The book is set in Tucson, AZ. I read some of the other reviews and was iffy about whether or not to read this; I'M GLAD I READ IT! The world building is minimal but I don't think much was needed. It's a paranormal universe set in an actual town. There's nothing flowery about it. I loved the characters and related to everything, as I've worked in the legal field. I love the scene where he's doing research over the weekend and thinks he'll be alone 😂 It's a great story and I loved it

My sides hurt...

Omg this book was not what I was expecting at all! It was better! Here I am picking a book that looks more on the serious side of paranormal, then I read the back about a weed smoking werewolves. Open the book up and I'm blind sided with all the laughs mixed in with the serious parts. I absolutley will recommend this book to anyone who loves vampires and needs a good laugh.

Unique storyline

I enjoyed this story and Ms. Diament definitely weaves a blanket of blended characters! However some pages and even dialogue just drags and you find yourself tempted to set this down while other characters held you glued to the page! I will definitely give the next book a try though.

Kindle recommended it to me and I absolutely loved it!!!
Emma and Henry are hilarious as they take swipes at each other, and Rick the secretary of this underground secret immortal law firm is one of my favorite characters.
I highly recommend this book if you’re looking for something light and hot. I’m curious to read the next book and find out what happens next.

This was a very entertaining romance. Emma and Henry's story was fun and enjoyable. I liked both these characters and I thought that the attraction between them was smoky. The story was interesting and had drama, tension, twist and strong emotions. This is my frank, freely posted review.
