These two books should never have been paired
First of all, let me say I’m an avid reader. I’ve read many of Jack Hunt’s books but this was my first from J.S. Donovan. It seems a bit unjust that I have to rate and review these two books together. I initially gave a rating of one star, but in all honesty, if I rated them separately, Aftermath would have received four stars and Storm Surge one star.
Aftermath was written in Hunt’s usual style. The story was mostly believable and well edited. Storm Surge started out ok but then the story took a serious downward spiral. Scenes were not allowed to fully develop and seemed rushed. In one scene with Roy and Maxine, the character went from being Roy to suddenly being Owen! This scene occurred while Owen was missing.
Every writer has spell check. There are too many misspellings to list. Surely there was an editor involved. I probably could have continued to struggle through to the end but when the writer decided that Maxine, 38 year old mother of twin teenagers could suddenly breastfeed an orphaned newborn, I absolutely had to put it down! Seriously? You could ask any woman and be told that this doesn’t happen. A woman’s breast doesn’t always have milk.
I can’t recommend Storm Surge and likely won’t be giving J.S. Donovan a second chance.

The main character irked me to no end.
This book contains two stories. The first story can be found in another collection so I will skip it since I have already rated it. The second story centers around Maxine and that's the character that rubbed me the wrong way. The book has many characters but Maxine takes center stage has her entire goal is to find her teenage children. Many of the decisions she makes are based on emotion instead of sound logic. It's frustrating to say the least. At times she is smart and in others she is not. Not to spoil the book so I will mention one character who happens to be her brother in law. He knows hos shizzle. Spends twenty years solidly prepping just so he can lose it all due to a bunch of, to say it mildly, morons and societal rejects. Him losing everything burns me up especially with the knowledge that he could have lived many easy years from his preps. Then people morons and rejects started showing up at his door. It's a decent with a lot of plot threads dangling never to be resolved. This author is becoming (in)famous for this.

Enjoyed the story line
As always I enjoyed the writing of James Hunt. I always highly recommend his books however this time I have to say, I struggled with this boxed set. It had been very poorly proof read, frequently getting characters names flipped around and calling them by other characters names. I kept finding myself stopped in my tracks as I read along and came across the name of the wrong character in the text. Initially I’d get confused and just assume they’d switched characters and I’d go back several paragraphs trying to reread because I thought I’d lost the thread of the story some how. Eventually it happened so frequently that I just read past it. I’m surprised for Hunt to put his name on a work so clearly unpolished.

A good read
As with everything I've read by these authors both of these books had a captivating story and I'll read more by either one. I understand and can usually read past spelling or grammar mistakes. I know. Indie writers face more challenges than others. But the second book in this set had some problems that I found difficult to get past. The main problem for me was frequent reference to the wrong person. One paragraph would be discussing person x, then continue in the next paragraph but switch to person y. I managed to fill in the correct person and finish the book, which I enjoyed.

Two stories, two different cities and one goal: Survive until the power returns.
When the power goes out and doesn’t come back on it will not be long before chaos is the result. Rich or poor it will not matter because no one can survive alone. Parents must do everything they can to protect their children in these two stories. There are losses and triumphs but they survive the best they can.

Aftermath EMP Boxset by James Hunt is an amazing box set that I have read. I really enjoyed reading this box set cause I like reading about suspense, horror and thrillers. So if you like reading about these same things that I do in this story then I highly recommend this story for you to read.

This is a wonderful box set from a great author. The stories are fast-paced and full of action and trepidation. Brilliantly crafted plots with realistic characters and dialogue. A must read if you enjoy your post-apocalyptic stories with lots of action and down to earth characters.

Incredible books that can give you a realistic idea of what an EMP will be like, and what the world will likely become. I enjoyed the stories and found them well-written with characters you can like even if you do not like them - sometimes good people do behave badly. Great set, I loved them both.

Interesting book
These two books shed light on the horrendous possibility of an EMG attack and it's aftereffects. It is such a concerning book , of something that could be real. Everyone would benefit of reading this book and reflecting on it. Also one question, how can a non-pregnant woman nurse a baby?

This was a really great box set!! Loved the characters and the story. Didn’t want to put it down, had me hooked from beginning to end!! Highly recommend!!

Thrilling books!
An AMP strikes and the aftermath is definitely very scary. Only the prepared can survive. Looting, fighting and killing become the norm. These books are very thought-provoking and truly scary.

Good read. No zombies; but a very possible after affect of an emp attack. Giving an example of how egotistical selfish and heartless humans can be when you come down to the nitty gritty

Action Packed Adventure
Two sit on the edge of your seat, can’t put down books about what could happen after an EMP attack. Some editing errors are a bit distracting but the storylines are well worth ignoring them.

Good story line
Both books had good story lines and plenty of action. Once started reading you could not stop. Only negative thing is the proofing really was bad and a lot of the errors were very distracting.

Is this possible?
This book made me stop and think. Could any of these things really happen? I liked the character of Maxine because she was so brave and such a compassionate person. I was sorry that the man she !oved,Owen, was killed.

The story was predictable - typical "end of the world" stuff. It did keep my interest, however, until the end. The typos and incorrect grammar were very annoying. I wish that publishers would proofread before they release a book.

Boxed set
I bought the books as a boxed set. The stories were good and moved along at a fairly good pace. I gave 4 stars because the 2nd book had a ton of errors that included a character mix up, a lot of sentences with extra words and even incorrect words.

Fantastic
What a great writer. Right up there with the best of them. As you read his books you get totally drawn in almost like being there. One does wonder can it really happen. Maybe so!

Story ok
The story is ok but the spelling, editing and syntax were very poor. If you're going to write a book, please be able to form complete sentences, and know the difference between there, they're and their.

I truly have enjoyed reading these EMP book series! Jane Hunt always delivers a story journey and adventures. I must warn that there is some strong language, but not a lot. I still highly recommend them!

They both need to cope with events that will test them when the emp is over. Life is never going to be the same. What will they have to do? Can they do it? Follow their adventures

Hunt's work is fairly good. He's written better. But Donovan - not so much. I have to agree with Donna Nelson's review. I found myself fast forwarding through Donovan's contribution until I finally just stopped reading it.

A World Gone Crazy
Aftermath pulled me in from the beginning to the end. The characters were masterfully woven together with a sense of family from the very first scene. The ending was surprising but not unexpected. All in all I would read other books by this author.

Both of these books were amazing, I loved the first one, ranch life is part of my DNA, but both were so good I stayed up til 5am trying to finish them!
