"Real Science. Real Life. "" "Deborah Beidel, Cynthia Bulik, and Melinda Stanley take a scientist-practitioner-educator approach and help students see and understand the connection between the science and practice of abnormal psychology. This leading-edge author team, consisting of three active researchers, clinicians, and educators, take a scientist-practitioner approach emphasizing the rich blend of both the science and practice of abnormal psychology throughout the text. The developmental trajectory of each condition is discussed where appropriate and scientific findings with respect to race and gender are incorporated into discussions about each condition. Biological findings are integrated with findings from social and behavioral sciences, highlighting the complexity of abnormal behavior and how it is often influenced by a wide range of variables. The authors encourage students to look at psychological disorders along a continuum and analyze disorders in terms of whether the individual's behavior creates distress or impairs daily functioning. Importantly, an effort is made to "bring to life" the nature of these conditions by providing vivid clinical descriptions. In addition to short descriptions used liberally throughout each chapter, a fully integrated case study is presented at the end of each chapter, again illustrating the interplay of biological, psychosocial and emotional factors. This was the textbook used in our Abnormal Psychology class. I thought that this book was well-written in spots and a bit patchy in others. The "practical" examples and case studies weren't always illuminating and at worst seemed to be representing stereotypes. I have been in the mental health system for most of my adult life and I know that there is a lot more depth and complexity to these issues than is reflected in this text. The portions of the book dealing with the history of mental illness and the various experimental methods used when studying these conditions were informative, however.
Abnormal psychology is always one of the most fascinating courses for a psychology student; who isn't interested by human differences? This text thoroughly explains symptoms, etiology, and epidemiology of many major disorders in conjunction with the DSM-V updates of 2013. Not only does this text lay it all out, Biedel and her co-authors go above and beyond to intrigue the student and to fight the stigmatic biases that pervade abnormal psychology. While I am still only a student, I would highly recommend this text to any professor should they ask my opinion of it.
there are many influences on psychological development, including situational factors, environmental influences, and genetics. Their goal is not to force people to achieve “normality,” but to help people who struggle with mental and emotional disorders so that they can live more fulfilling, active lives. Some people work in research, studying people as a collective whole to learn more about human behavioral patterns, while others work as care providers, providing services directly to individuals.
This was the text for my Abnormal Psychology class at McHenry County College. It's a fascinating subject and this textbook does it justice. It was well-laid out and written in a very accessible style.
Although I prefer paperback, I found this eText easy to access and somewhat easy to flip pages. "Somewhat" because it takes a few seconds before it turns to the next pages. The book itself was easy to follow and had good examples on each cases. Good book.
