Julian Brown, still devastated by the untimely death of his wife, travels to England with his high school students for a fun-filled summer of theater. What begins as an innocent journey to Wessex becomes a nightmare as Julian finds himself caught in the middle of a murder investigation involving student Kelly Fowler. As the sleepy town of Blandford Forum stirs at the gossip, news of the murder travels overseas to Julian's hometown. Kelly's diary reveals a secret about her relationship with Julian. This creates an overwhelming number of enemies which will push Julian into a corner, forcing him to react in the only way he understands.
Pause was published in 2007 after spending several weeks in Blandford Forum, England researching the town's history. Since then I received my MFA in Screenwriting from UCLA. I am currently a ghost writer of TV and film scripts. I have a produced sitcom pilot using my pseudonym Stuart Gram. I teach screenwriting and producing at a university in Florida.
As someone with a number of writer friends, it's with a grin masking a groan that I usually accept the challenge of reading their work.
Stuart Fail's PAUSE, however, provided one of those rare and happy occasions where I absolutely couldn't put the damn thing down. It's honestly every bit as good as his plays.
It reads like an older book, with a non-nonsense maturity of language and everyday speech that tells you that Fail's concern is to pull you into the story rather than bury you in self-indulgent cleverness. I can't help thinking of Hitchcock's THE MAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH when I watch Julian struggle to simultaneously survive and comprehend his situation in alien surroundings. (Please forgive me for being nebulous --- I'd rather not include any spoilers).
PAUSE is a classic thriller with brilliantly stark, even-handed writing.
