It can trace its roots back to the 8th century BC, and transformed itself from a nomad's tongue to an ornate diplomatic language; but thanks to an overhaul from Atatürk, it's surprisingly simple to learn - in fact, a delight!
Two-way dictionary Guide to pronunciation and phrase-building Fail-safe small talk Practicalities - how to catch a bus or book a room
I am a little bit skeptical myself about language phrasebooks. But I have to admit that I have made good use of this book during my stay in Istanbul. It is easy to use, even if you pronounce some letters wrong, repeating them slowly (and maybe using gestures) will make Turkish people understand you quickly.
I see it as a must, since a lot of Turkish people don't or won't talk to you in English. This little phrasebook is not something you read on an afternoon sitting and throw it away. It is meant to be carried with you, given its easy style to browse. You can flip from grammatical tools and basic words to social mingling related phrases, or practical expressions or travel-linked vocabulary. There is also a double dictionary at the back of the book for quick and easy use.
It was a successful experience for me and I would recommend it to everyone else.

Didn't really use this as much as I would have liked. If I was there longer and/or didn't have a guided experience, probably would have been more useful.
