Jack and Anna are dead. Not romantic vampire dead. Not even night-of-the-living dead, but really dead.

At least Jack is. Anna might just be having a near-death experience. It's surprisingly hard to tell. Either way, they're on a path through the afterlife; where Death wears a polo shirt, factories manufacture broken things, and forests try to trap you. To make it through,

I haven’t loved a book this hard in a long time…

When they die in a tragic accident, Jack and Anna travel together through the afterlife on a quest to discover what “the beyond” will be for them, while their family members are left to deal with a life without Jack and Anna in it. Listed as a YA contemporary fantasy, Emma G. Rose’s debut novel introduces creatively original ideas on how the afterlife might be experienced by those embraced by Death’s arms.

I loved Emma’s interpretation of life and afterlife and the internal struggles. This story is a lovely way of sorting it all out, with a little bit of adventure thrown in.

This is one of those books where I finish it and I don't know how I feel yet. Which is such an oddly good thing. There are so many great features of this book, I don't know where to begin - the humor, the cast, the story itself, the author's representation of the afterlife. Oh, and Ella's POV had me close to sobbing at one point. Emma G. Rose took a tough topic to write or read about and handled it beautifully.

What an amazing read! Jack and Anna’s journey through the afterlife is as you would imagine, intense and emotional but also fun and delightful! The journey through different areas keeps your interest throughout the whole story, wondering where they will end up next! I think everyone can relate to this story of death, love and friendship.

Emma G Rose intended to become a kick-ass girl reporter like Nellie Bly, until the Christmas Eve she stood on a riverbank waiting for rescue divers to pull a body from the water. That's when she stopped waiting and wandered off to explore the world instead. People who keep track of this sort of thing call her writing speculative fiction. It's a fancy name for what you get when you mix up a dash of ...more
