Phantom of the Academy #1

Taken by the Phantom

Rate this book
I’ve never felt at home at Juilliard. My stagefright always makes me choke when I’m under the spotlight, to my classmates’ delight. But when I’m dragged into a new world, to a new school—where singing is more than a talent, it’s magic—I can’t hide my voice anymore. This new power is tempting, but terrifying forces swirl around the kingdom of Cantus. Missing girls, rivals at my new academy, Rebels, demons slaying people in the street—and it all leads back to him. The mysterious, powerful Phantom, who lurks beneath the opera school and demands he be my teacher—a demand which soon grows into something deeper, darker. But if I want to survive this place, or have any hope of going home, I may have no choice but to give in to him… and all he desires.

I friggin adore this spin on the phantom of the opera!!!! So amazingly written and the characters are fabulous as well !!! I have watched and read a lot of versions of this tale and I will have to say this is one of the best!!! In this tale the phantom erike is cursed and he's a total bad boy!!! And Krissy a human with the gift of song becomes his obsession. This is a sensuous and sexy twist on a old classic and it totally pulled me in. The secondary characters are intriguing as well from erike's half demon friend and confidant patrick to krissy 's fire talent friend nefiti ,love this chic!!! And even the stuck up narsisstic Charlotte the mirror witch is interesting as well. Can't wait to read more of this series!!! I want to know more about erike's underworld and the curse that has made him part Ilk demon. Next book is Bargain in Blood ! Until next time luv's💗💋

If she sees me, I will have my excuse. To drag her into my lair. To lay her in my bed. To never let her go. She would come to enjoy this place: darkness and me and silk sheets.

Such a very strange book. Certainly a very original take on phantom. Krissey is a shy student of music that finds herself drawn into a strange impossible world of magic. A school of music... But magic here is music, the voice, the word. There is a curse, yet to be fully revealed, which has split this world in two. Krissey is taken to be prima Donna, her voice the key to breaking the curse. But what of the mysterious Erike who resides beneath the school. He has power but the curse has disfigured him. He needs Krissey to help him, which side will she choose?

Hmmmm. First two chapters I found difficult, a little confused. But the book picked up as soon as Erike enters. A lot of the writing is very very good, it references its influences and is sensual and very sexy at times. Hoping for more of that.

It’s strange as it seems to sit between Harry Potter, POTO, and fae legends. Is this a YA book, is it for teenagers? Some of the writing suggests this yet during the more passionate moments it takes on a beautiful adult tone I really appreciate.

I like it, it just confuses me as to its target audience.

Phans will enjoy, I’m moving straight to book 2.

Hauntingly Alluring

I've long been a fan of POTO and while I've read many retelling and adaptations of other classics, I've not read and Phantom retelling before. This not only changed that, but now I can't wait to read more!

Interesting

This story has an excellent beginning. It is dark and intriguing. I am still confused about the curse. So far we have bits and pieces about it but not a full picture. I kind of wish someone would sit xoen and explain the curse. As it is, there is no clear good oe bad guy. Both sides seem to be at fault. And i suspect that what has been laid down at the feet of one is less his fault than the accusations say. It is a dark tale though. The "f" word is used and there is a lot of hormonal/sexual tension.

Well crafted new world and tale for the usual suspects

Loosely based on The Phantom Of The Opera, set in modern times with a paranormal twist, this is a highly engaging tale. It ends on a cliffhanger, but the second book is available - I'll be typing this quickly to go to the next volume!

Christine, Erik, Raoul, Carlotta and more are turned into new characters here, glimpses of the source material still evident. They're young, beautiful, and the book has sensual undertones - sometimes overtones! - woven throughout. The plot is paranormal, fantasy that takes a moment to understand the world's terminology before I was speed reading to see what might happen next.

An example of the writing:

"Suzanna opens her mouth, closes her eyes, and sings. The old ballad is familiar to me; in these halls, in this city, I have heard it many times. Yet each rendition feels wholly new. The song itself is in an ancient tongue, taught only to those preparing to share their Shard. But the melody is ripe with anguish. It is a curious thing, the lone call of a wounded animal to the world; the absence of answer."
