Standing over six feet tall, USA Today bestselling author Jonathan Moeller has the piercing blue eyes of a Conan of Cimmeria, the bronze-colored hair of a Visigothic warrior-king, and the stern visage of a captain of men, none of which are useful in his career as a computer repairman, alas.
He has written the DEMONSOULED series of sword-and-sorcery novels, and continues to write THE GHOSTS sequence about assassin and spy Caina Amalas, the COMPUTER BEGINNER'S GUIDE series of computer books, and numerous other works. His books have sold over one million copies worldwide.
The Ghosts, book 3. Spoilers ahead for earlier ones.
Caina is investigating slavers, and her work frees some and more importantly turns up documents. It also reveals that the slavers had sorcerous help.
So, investigation begins. It involves Ark acting as a guard again, a jewel merchant and his daughter, a man who thinks his legitimate brother's wife did something to her husband, women being told that other people are holding them back, rich widows, a legend of a child-killing spirit, and more.
I sadly didn't enjoy this one as much as the first two- maybe it was the new Ghost circle that wasn't working for me, or the baddies were lack luster?
Also, I know the ending is meant to be the big nail biting climax of the story but I'll be honest in that I kind of sped read to the end. But
But I am interested in where the dreams are coming from and how they will effect the story in the future if I decide to read on["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>
Again an enjoyable read, but the author seems to be repeating himself with yet another megalomaniac magic user.
There was just one little thing, having just read the previous short story Ghost Light I couldn’t help wondering what happened to Caina’s Ghostsilver dagger she used to kill Cynoshard. She keeps coming up against people protected against her steel daggers so why doesn’t she keep it with her at all times. At the end of this book she obtained another Ghostsilver dagger, I wonder if she will still have it at the start of the next book.
Great story line - similar to Sarah J Maas' Assassin series, unfortunately it hasn't been proof read properly (by a human) with grammatical errors, many words in sentences out of context, and many sentences missing crucial words. It's a shame, as this is a really great series (so far) - but the poor English just distracts from the book.
Caina kept watch for the "rest of the night," keeping an eye on the road and the sea. Later, Halfdan took her place at watch. Caina caught a few hours of sleep.
Which is it?
I am beginning to appreciate Caina more. She is able to outwit her adversaries, even though she does not have any magical powers other than being able to discern the ability in others.
I enjoyed this story and was unable to figure out how Caina was going to be able to overthrow the evil sorceress until it actually happened. Interesting characters. Good reading. I like how one book picks up where the last one left off.
There did seem to be more violence in this book than some of the others. I think it may be because so much of it involved innocent humans, not supernatural beings that deserve what happens to them.
I really hate how much focus the author has put on the fertility of the FMC. The FMC feels that she can't be loved or even in a relationship since she can't reproduce. The author frequently has the FMC reference her sorrow and loss at not being able to have children. SHE CAN HAVE CHILDREN!! There is adoption, fostering, heck she could find a widowed person with children. OR here is a novel idea find someone who doesn't want children and loves her for being her and not what her womb can/can't do. She doesn't have to have a working womb to be a parent or to be a person that deserves love. This was used/referenced so much in the book. It really vexed me. Total misogynistic bullshit. I feel the author used this so he didn't have to have any sort of romantic content.
Dear Jonathan, another entertaining and outstanding book in the Ghost series. China is again at the top of her game taking on the most evil and ruthless people in this empire. A wonderful story of good versus evil, just one of many from Jonathan's pen (computer). Jonathan, you need to find a better proof reader as many of your stories contain simple errors. I highly recommend reading your adult stories to anyone interested in reading a great story. Thanks again for the entertainment.
Caina is off to Marsis to hunt down slave trader Lord Naelon Icaraeus. The son of Lord Haeron Icaraeus, who was Maglarion’s puppet from book one, and exiled traitor to the Empire. Her search uncovers a whole other level of evil that will be her biggest challenge yet.
Another excellent tale that builds on Caina’s Ghost resume. We see some familiar faces and some new ones. Plus a storyline from book two has a new development.
3.5 stars. Continuation of the ghosts series. Caina once again is facing the evils of sorcery - this time a force far greater than she ever has seen before. Ark’s storyline is continued into this book as the ghosts finally find evidence of the slaver who attacked the city his family lived in. Caina is forced to face the mental scars left upon her by her mother and McLarian. Good story that has a couple surprises that keeps you reading. Does not end on a cliffhanger.
This series keeps getting better and better. The characters and story are very strong and you'll fall for them. The story telling by this author is great and you'll keep turning the pages. Great Reading Everyone!
This series so far seems much like a Sherlock Holmes meets James Bond in the way that each book is like the "next adventure of Caina in..." and less about her character arc. It is written well and rather interesting, but for me, the main character feels a bit static. After gone through what she had, it is resolved rather quickly and there is no real conflict in the story, except of for some pieces of thoughts and feeling described by the writer. So what is left is the curiosity to learn how will Caina resolve the next case, each seems more difficult than the other. I have to end my experience after the first three as I don't see this is going anywhere except more and more cases to solve…
Caina, Halfdan and Ark are headed to Marsis this time, where an old enemy is heavily involved in trading slaves to noble houses. But it quickly turns out that the slave trade is far from the worst evil the group with the help of the local Ghost circle has to face: There is dark sorcery at work here, of the most horrifying and powerful kind that makes everything Caina and her friends have faced before pale in comparison. Another thrilling, fast-paced adventure with lots of action and a nice cast of supporting characters to help out - would be great to see some of them again in future books.
Another amazing book that really ties well together magic of many forms, secret agendas and just action, so much action. Caina is not infallible which I love and the new characters brought in I really hope I see more of them. It is also nice to see underlying story arcs not being dragged out for books on end. Action packed, fast paced and definitely showing a very different side I struggled to put it down.
Terrific book I am in awe of your ability. The art almost put me off, but I would bet a lot of people would kick themselves if they pass on any of your books, I am so glad I read the first one, then I was hooked. Well done.
Caina reminds me of the television character in the show Alias. She always finds herself in these really bad situations with power hungry sorcerers who just want a piece of her. I had to finish this book in one sitting.
Ahh, this is by far better than the first two books. What Caina had to face seemed to be impossible odds. The ending was incredible satisfying and left amazing closure for a certain character that I will not spoil. What a ride.
now its getting better the story and the he's not repeating himself to much, still script style writing but it's now getting longer in his discretion and also felt like I was feeling her pain and desertion at the end of the book.
Enjoyed this one. Nice use of ghosts, horrible villains. Climax seemed a bit rushed to me. The analyst ghost was awesome. Nice to get some story lines wrapped up. Loved the emphasis on necessity of forgiveness.
I really like these stories for a quick and easy read. But there is really no excuse for not having a professional editor. It is just sloppy and distracting.
